Starmer axes political violence tsar who backed climate protests crackdown
Sir Keir Starmer has axed the Government's political violence tsar who had called for tougher powers to tackle extremists behind climate change and anti-Israel protests.
The Home Office is scrapping the post held by Lord Walney, whose responsibilities will be transferred to a new expanded commissioner for counter-extremism role as part of a wider overhaul of how protest and extremism are monitored by the Home Office.
Lord Walney was appointed as the UK Government's independent adviser on political violence and disruption by former prime minister Boris Johnson.
He has been a target of protesters himself, who have blamed him for a police crackdown that has led to the imprisonment of more than 50 Just Stop Oil and Palestine Action demonstrators.
'Noble causes hijacked by extremist groups'
The former Labour MP recently warned that far-Left groups, particularly those involved in climate change protests and anti-Israeli movements, were a danger to the rule of law.
'Noble causes such as the battle against climate change have been hijacked by extremist groups, determined to bypass democratic norms and cause maximum destruction to society,' he said.
In a wide-ranging report drawn up last May for ministers, Lord Walney proposed police should get new powers to ban protests that were likely to intimidate and disrupt communities. Chief constables would be able to block marches due to the 'cumulative' disruption and 'persistent' threats to public order caused by protests.
Under his plans, police forces would also be allowed to impose conditions on protests and limit their frequency if they judged that it was diverting too many officers away from fighting crime in local communities.
In a post on X reacting to the scrapping of his role, Lord Walney urged ministers to adopt his proposals and show 'they understand the depth of the public's contempt for activists who unlawfully disrupt their lives and cause criminal damage to get their way.'
He added: 'The forthcoming crime and policing bill is an important opportunity to give police forces greater ability to balance the right to protest with the cumulative harm that weekly demonstrations can cause to communities and the huge drain on police resources at a time [when] they are already overstretched.'
Islamist and far-Right extremism biggest UK threats
Yvette Cooper, the Home Secretary, ordered a 'sprint' review of the Government's counter-extremism strategy after the summer riots sparked by the murders of three young girls at a Taylor-Swift themed dance class in Southport.
However, she rejected key parts of a leaked version of the review which said that the approach to tackling extremism should no longer be based on specific ideologies such as Islamism or the far-Right but 'on behaviours and activity of concern.'
She maintained that Islamist extremism, followed by far-Right extremism, remained the biggest threats the UK faced and the focus of the UK's counter-extremism strategy.
Lord Walney is understood to have been assured that ministers are considering his key proposals. A Home Office spokesman said: 'His work will continue to inform our approach as we move forward to assess the complex challenges facing our country.
'We want to thank Lord Walney for his dedicated work as Independent Adviser and his vital contribution to the UK Government's understanding of political violence and disruption.'

Reeves' winter fuel payment U-turn shows Labour is running scared of Nigel Farage and Reform
Last week's exclusive weekly polling for The Independent is perhaps the biggest indication of why Rachel Reeves has performed a huge U-turn on winter fuel. The breakdown of the Techne UK weekly tracker poll revealed that 36 per cent of pensioners now plan to vote for Nigel Farage's Reform UK — a full 20 points ahead of Labour 's 16 per cent. As any political analyst or experienced campaigner will know, the group of voters most likely to vote are pensioners. Which may explain why pensioners with a joint income of £75,000 will now get the winter fuel payment — but hard up younger voters who cannot even get a mortgage are left to struggle. The same logic has applied to the increasingly unaffordable triple lock on the state pension rise each year while the government looks to slash benefits for the disabled and says it cannot afford to expand child benefit to more than two children per family. Labour MPs and activists came back from the Runcorn by-election, which was narrowly lost to Reform, and the local elections in May with a simple message: at the doorsteps, people were complaining about the loss of the winter fuel allowance. The issue turned Sir Keir Starmer and Ms Reeves into hate figures with nobody apparently willing to buy the argument that they needed to fill a £22bn black hole left by the Tories. Angry pensioners also probably account for the biggest group of voters to turn to Farage and Reform from Labour. The statistics show that the older that voters are, the more attracted they are to Reform's message. So it seems likely that the winter fuel policy announcement by Labour at midday on Monday — the exact moment Farage was due to deliver a keynote speech in Port Talbot, a Labour heartland of south Wales — was deliberately aimed to stop the flow of voters moving away from Labour to Reform, as well as a slide in the polls, with Farage's party now around eight points ahead. It is fair to say that Farage was laughing at Labour when he took the stage 10 minutes late, no doubt to digest the news. But it handed him ammunition to back up his claim that there is 'no doubt Reform are making the political weather'. After all it was Farage who said winter fuel would be restored by Reform. Now Labour is doing it. Before, he announced Labour would nationalise British steel. Soon after, Labour did it. It is only a matter of time before Labour do another thing Farage has claimed Reform will do and remove the two child benefit cap. Maybe Labour will follow his suggestion of reigniting Port Talbot's blast furnaces too. The drop in support for Wales run for 26 years by Labour is terrifying those around Starmer. Whichever way one looks at it, the decision to restore winter fuel to 9 million of the 11 million pensioners who lost it and the way it was done underlines that Labour is running scared of Reform and Farage.

Freedom Flotilla gives statement as Israel 'illegally seizes' Madleen
The Freedom Flotilla Coalition spoke through its Telegram channel after its ship the Madleen was captured by Israel. The 12 people on board – including Member of the European Parliament Rima Hassan and Al Jazeera correspondent Omar Faiad – have been imprisoned. The Madleen had been sailing under a UK red ensign, meaning it was under UK jurisdiction in international waters, when Israel attacked it. The move has been described as a 'clear breach' of international law by the Turkish government, while the UK's has remained silent. READ MORE: UK Government sends spy plane over Gaza as Freedom Flotilla ship threatened by Israel The Freedom Flotilla Coalition said: 'It's time for our governments to do their jobs and sanction Israel. Its illegal attack on 'Madleen' while sailing in international waters is a small extension of their war crimes in Gaza. 'Governments, institutions, media, and corporations must stop protecting Israel, now. They must stop prioritising profit over human lives, now. 'Protect our volunteers while protecting Palestinians in Gaza and wider Palestine.' On the abduction of MEP Hassan, the group said it was 'not only an attack on civilians, but a direct assault on international law, parliamentary immunity, and the principle of free humanitarian access'. It went on: 'Israel must be held accountable. The European Parliament must formally demand her immediate release and Israel's legal accountability. 'This interception is a direct result of the international community's ongoing failure to hold Israel accountable for its war crimes. Activists pictured on the Madleen, which was sailing under a UK flag (Image: Freedom Flotilla) 'A state currently on trial for genocide must not be allowed to dictate whether life-saving aid reaches the very people it stands accused of trying to destroy.' The Freedom Flotilla Coalition pointed to the 2010 raid on their ships by the Israeli military, which also occurred in international waters and left 10 volunteers dead. The group said: 'No state has the authority to enforce an unlawful blockade, especially one whose primary purpose is to starve civilians and obstruct humanitarian relief. 'Israel's threats and attacks against peaceful ships like 'Madleen', carrying essential aid and international human rights defenders, are part of its broader pattern of impunity and disregard for international norms.' The unlawful seizure of the Madleen The Freedom Flotilla Coalition said of the boat seizure: 'At 3:02AM EEST, 110 nautical miles from Gaza, the 'Madleen' was illegally boarded by the IOF [Israel Occupation Forces] in international waters. 'Prior to their abduction, quadcopter drones flew in close range before attacking the 'Madleen' with a white chemical-like substance, harming their eyes. Signals were jammed, and disturbing audio was broadcast to interfere with communication over the radio system as the IOF boarded. 'Our volunteers were attacked and taken against their will while sailing lawfully toward Palestinian territorial waters, where Israel has no right to control. 'The 'Madleen' has reportedly been seized, and our aid, including baby formula, food, and medical supplies, has also been taken.' CCTV image shared by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (Image: FFC) Sharing security footage timestamped 2:02AM, the group added: 'This is the last moment that the Freedom Flotilla Coalition ground team saw their friends, comrades and family members while they were being illegally intercepted, boarded and abducted by the Israeli military. Their whereabouts remain unknown. 'At this time, we are urgently working to locate the 11 international volunteers and one journalist abducted from 'Madleen'. 'According to the Israeli Immigration Authority, they are not yet in its custody. FFC lawyers in occupied Palestine have repeatedly contacted Israeli military officials, but are yet to receive any response to inquiries since the early hours of the morning.' Who is on board the Madleen? There are twelve civilian crew members on board the ship, which is flying the UK flag. The crew members are: Greta Thunberg, Swedish climate and social justice activist Baptise Andre, French physician Omar Faiad, French journalist with Al Jazeera Reva Viard, French climate activist Rima Hassan, French member of the European parliament, representing La France Insoumise party Yanis Mhamdi, French journalist with independent media outlet Blast Pascal Maurieras, French activist Suayb Ordu, Turkish activist Marco van Rennes, Dutch marine engineering student Sergio Toribio, Spanish crew member, a member of marine conservation NGO Sea Shepherd Thiago Avila, Brazilian journalist, social activist and politician Yasemin Acar, German activist of Kurdish descent Israel's statements Israel's defence minister Israel Katz said the Madleen was being taken to the port of Ashdod, which is around 17 miles north of Gaza. Katz said: "I congratulate the IDF for the quick and safe takeover of the 'Madleen' flotilla to prevent them from breaking the blockade and reaching the shores of Gaza. "I instructed the IDF to show the flotilla passengers the video of the horrors of the October 7 massacre when they arrive at the port of Ashdod. "It is appropriate that the antisemitic Greta and her fellow Hamas supporters see exactly who the Hamas terrorist organisation they came to support and for whom they work is, what atrocities they committed against women, the elderly, and children, and against whom Israel is fighting to defend itself. "The IDF will continue its war against the Hamas murderers with all its moral righteousness until they are subdued, all the hostages are released, and the security of the State of Israel is ensured." Separately, Israel's foreign ministry called the boat a "selfie yacht' and claimed the "show is over". All the passengers of the 'selfie yacht' are safe and unharmed. They were provided with sandwiches and water. The show is over. — Israel Foreign Ministry (@IsraelMFA) June 9, 2025 It went on: "While Greta and others attempted to stage a media provocation whose sole purpose was to gain publicity — and which included less than a single truckload of aid — more than 1200 aid trucks have entered Gaza from Israel within the past two weeks, and in addition, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation has distributed close to 11 million meals directly to civilians in Gaza. "There are ways to deliver aid to the Gaza Strip — they do not involve Instagram selfies. Israel is preparing to hold the 12 unlawfully detained activists in separate cells in Givon Prison in Ramla, media in the country is reporting. The far-right national security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir is said to have ordered officials to block the detainees from having any pro-Palestine symbols or access to any electronic communications equipment.

Winter Fuel Payments details of who is eligible confirmed
The payment, worth up to £300, will return for millions this winter, the Chancellor has announced. To be eligible for the winter fuel allowance, a person will need to have reached state pension age by the week starting September 15 this year. Devolved authorities in Scotland and Northern Ireland will each receive a funding uplift so they too can meet the new threshold. Payments will be restored to the vast majority of pensioners who previously received it because anyone with an income of under £35,000 a year will now get the payment automatically Those with an income above this threshold will also receive the payment, but it will then be reclaimed from them in tax. Pensioners who do not want to receive the payment will be able to opt out, according to the Treasury. The decision to limit the winter fuel payment to only those who claimed pension credit was one of Labour's first acts in Government, aimed at balancing what was described as a £22 billion 'black hole' in the public finances. This meant the number of pensioners receiving the payment was reduced by around 10 million, from 11.4 million to 1.5 million. But Sir Keir Starmer announced there would be a partial U-turn on the policy in May, after it was thought to have contributed to Labour's drubbing in the local elections. The Treasury claims the new arrangement will cost £1.25 billion in England and Wales, while means-testing winter fuel will save the taxpayer £450 million. Chancellor Rachel Reeves said: 'Targeting winter fuel payments was a tough decision but the right decision because of the inheritance we had been left by the previous government. 'It is also right that we continue to means test this payment so that it is targeted and fair, rather than restoring eligibility to everyone including the wealthiest. 'But we have now acted to expand the eligibility of the winter fuel payment so no pensioner on a lower income will miss out. NEWS. Winter Fuel Payment to be reinstated for all State Pensioners this winter, but then clawed back via tax system for all who earn over £35,000 (roughly average earnings). This is a big improvement. Full instant analysis video coming with all the details in a minute.… 'This will mean over three-quarters of pensioners receiving the payment in England and Wales later this winter.' Some two million pensioners who earn more than £35,000 will see their winter fuel payments clawed back via the taxman, the Treasury estimates. Kemi Badenoch, Leader of the Opposition, claimed the Prime Minister had 'scrambled to clear up a mess of his own making'. The Conservative leader added: 'I repeatedly challenged him to reverse his callous decision to withdraw winter fuel payments, and every time Starmer arrogantly dismissed my criticisms. hr /> Martin Lewis shares 'crucial need to know' energy bill rules 'This humiliating U-turn will come as scant comfort to the pensioners forced to choose between heating and eating last winter. The Prime Minister should now apologise for his terrible judgment.' Liberal Democrat Leader Sir Ed Davey said: 'Finally the Chancellor has listened to the Liberal Democrats and the tireless campaigners in realising how disastrous this policy was, but the misery it has caused cannot be overstated. 'Countless pensioners were forced to choose between heating and eating all whilst the Government buried its head in the sand for months on end, ignoring those who were really suffering. 'We will now study the detail of this proposal closely to make sure those who need support actually get that support. The pain they went through this winter cannot be for nothing.'
