George Mason defeats Saint Joseph's 74-64 in Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament semifinal
WASHINGTON (AP) — Jalen Haynes had 22 points to lead George Mason to a 74-64 victory over Saint Joseph's in an Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament semifinal on Saturday.
The second-seeded Patriots will play No. 1 seed VCU in the title game on Sunday with an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament up for grabs. George Mason is aiming for its first tournament championship since joining the conference in 2013. VCU, which became a member in 2012, has won it twice.
The Patriots made six trips to the NCAA Tournament as a member of the Colonial Athletic Association from 1989-2011. They advanced to the Final Four in 2006 where they lost to eventual-champion Florida. The Rams have made 19 appearances in the event and advanced to the Final Four in 2011 as an at-large team before losing to Butler. VCU beat USC in the first First Four game that season as the field grew to 68 teams.
Haynes also had seven rebounds and six assists for the Patriots (26-7). Darius Maddox hit three 3-pointers and scored 19. K.D. Johnson hit two 3-pointers and scored 12.
The sixth-seeded Hawks (22-12) were led by Xzayvier Brown, who finished with 26 points, six rebounds and two steals. Anthony Finkley totaled 14 points and four steals. Rasheer Fleming added nine points, 12 rebounds and two steals.
George Mason took the lead with 18:01 to go in the first half and never looked back. The score was 37-28 at halftime.

Speaking to Eurosport Germany, the top-ranked Sabalenka said her remarks after her 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-4 loss to Gauff at Roland-Garros this month were a mistake. In her post-match press conference in Paris, Sabalenka had suggested that the result was more due to her own errors than to Gauff's performance. Advertisement 'That was just completely unprofessional of me,' Sabalenka said. 'I let my emotions get the better of me. I absolutely regret what I said back then. You know, we all make mistakes. I'm just a human being who's still learning in life. I think we all have those days when we lose control. But what I also want to say is that I wrote to Coco afterward — not immediately, but recently.' Sabalenka hit 37 winners but finished the final with 70 unforced errors — compared to Gauff's 30. She said she wrote to Gauff to apologize and 'make sure she knew she absolutely deserved to win the tournament and that I respect her.' 'I never intended to attack her,' Sabalanka added. 'I was super emotional and not very smart at that press conference. I'm not necessarily grateful for what I did. It took me a while to go back and think about it, to approach it with open eyes, and to understand. I realized a lot about myself. Why did I lose so many finals?' Katie Boulter says death threats and abuse highlight dark side of tennis betting
LONDON (AP) — British tennis player Katie Boulter has told the BBC she received death threats targeting her and her family during the French Open, saying in an interview that online abuse has become the norm and that she is worried about the impact it will have on younger players. Boulter, who is 28-year-old and ranked No. 39 in the WTA, said she believes many of the abusive messages are sent by people who are placing bets on tennis matches, The message threatening her loved ones was sent during her French Open first-round match against Carole Monnet on May 29. After losing the first-set tie-break, Boulter won the match 6-7 (4), 6-1. 6-1. But the loss of the tiebreaker prompted the outrage. 'Hope you get cancer,' said one message. Another mentioned damaging her 'grandmother's grave if she's not dead by tomorrow' and 'candles and a coffin for your entire family.' A third said: 'Go to hell, I lost money my mother sent me.' Boulter, who shared with the BBC screenshots of the messages, said she is worried about the toll the widespread abuse takes on younger players. 'At the very start of my career, it's probably something I took very personally... getting comments about the way you look,' she said. 'It becomes more apparent every single time you go on your phone. 'I think it increases in number and it also increases in the level of things that people say. The program monitors public-facing social accounts for abusive and threatening content on social networks. It also provides support for players. According to statistics provided to the BBC by data science firm Signify, the ITF and WTA, about 8,000 abusive, violent or threatening messages were sent publicly to 458 tennis players through their social media accounts in 2024. Boulter, who received abuse after wins as well as losses, said a lot of it comes from people who have placed bets on her matches. 'As far as death threats, it's just not something you want to be reading straight after an emotional loss,' she said. 'A lot of the time you get it after you win as well.' According to Signify, angry gamblers sent 40% of all detected abuse, with messages clearly related to betting activity because of the timing or content of the abuse. Ratnayake takes 2 wickets on debut for Sri Lanka as Bangladesh struggles in first test
Associated Press GALLE, Sri Lanka (AP) — Offspinner Tharindu Ratnayake took two wickets in his test debut for Sri Lanka on Tuesday as Bangladesh struggled to 90 for three in the first session of the series. Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat in the first match of the new World Test Championship cycle but the morning session belonged to 29-year-old Ratnayake, who got his test cap after churning out wickets in the domestic circuit. It was right-arm seamer Asitha Fernando who set the tone early. Still riding the bounce from a productive county stint with Glamorgan, he had Anamul Haque caught behind for a duck. Then came Ratnayake, the ambidextrous bowler who can turn the ball both ways, and he made his mark in just his fourth over.
