Flats to be built next to Dick Turpin's grave
A former working men's club next to the final resting place of infamous highwayman Dick Turpin is to be replaced by an apartment block.
Plans approved by York councillors will see the vacant Tramways Club on Mill Street demolished with 35 flats built on the site.
Developer Oakgate City Living said it would provide "much-needed" homes in one of York's most sustainable locations.
But York Central Labour MP Rachael Maskell raised concerns along with 12 objectors, saying there was "not an urgency to develop more luxury accommodation in the area".
The flats would be built alongside St George's Churchyard, where Turpin's grave is located - although its authenticity is disputed by some historians.
Highwayman and horse thief Turpin - otherwise known as John Palmer - was hanged at York's Knavesmire in 1739.

Boy, 16, killed in hit and run crash named locally
A teenage pedestrian who was killed in a hit and run crash in Sheffield has been named locally. Abdullah Yaha Al-Zaidy, 16, was struck by a grey Audi which is believed to have been driven towards three electric bikes on Staniforth Road in Darnall on Wednesday afternoon. One of the e-bike riders, an 18-year-old man, suffered serious injuries and remains in hospital. A 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder on Thursday. Residents and local councillors have now paid tribute to the boy, who "always gave the best smiles", and said his death as he walked along the pavement behind the e-bikes had shocked the community. Three people, a 45-year-old woman and two men aged 26 and 46, have been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. All three remain in custody. Abdullah was described as an "innocent bystander" to the incident by South Yorkshire Police. The car did not stop at the scene. Mrs Khan, who has been living in the area for eight years, said the teenager used to work at Shansha Red Shop on Staniforth Road and serve her ice cream. "He was a good lad, reserved, not talkative but always gives good smiles," she said. "It's so sad. I couldn't sleep, especially knowing him, that upsets me really. "He was such a young boy." Darnall Labour councillor Mary Lea said: "I can speak for myself and my colleague, councillor Zahira Naz, and say we were shocked when we heard about this incident. "My first thoughts were of the family and the boy who lost his life and the tragedy of it all. "Our hearts go out to this young man's family at this time; and we can only imagine their grief and pain. We are thinking about them and they [are] in our prayers." South Yorkshire Police said the boy's family had been informed and was being supported by officers. Abdullah's name and photograph were shared by the South Yorkshire Janazah Announcements Facebook page, which provides information about Muslim funerals and burials, on Friday morning. The post read: "Abdullah, known locally as Abdul, was a beloved member of the Al-Shafeey Centre mosque. "He was reportedly walking to a nearby shop to meet his father, with plans to eat together, when the tragic accident occurred. "May Allah grant him the highest ranks of Jannah and grant his family and friends strength and patience during this unimaginable time." Drink driver jailed for causing three-car crash
A drink driver who was almost twice the legal limit when he caused a three-car crash that left a motorist seriously injured has been jailed for two and a half years. Brandon Barker, 26, lost control of his van after he clipped another car as he tried to overtake a lorry on a blind sweeping bend on the A15 near Hackthorn, Lincolnshire, in July 2024. Lincoln Crown Court heard Barker, of Wolsey Way, Lincoln, remained on the wrong side of the road before colliding head-on with a Mini leaving the 22-year-old driver with "catastrophic injuries". Barker, who admitted a charge of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, has also been banned from driving for 39 months. Two other cars were also forced off the road during the crash, which happened at about 06:30 BST on 2 July, the court heard. Judge James House KC was told the 22-year-old driver required two operations afer suffering multiple fractures and bruising to his brain. When interviewed by police, Barker accepted he had been drinking the night before the collision but said his driving had not been impaired, the court heard. A toxicology report concluded he was at least nearly twice the legal limit at the time of the crash and an investigation found he had also sent a text message while driving, the judge was told. In mitigation, Neil Sands described Barker as a "decent young man" who had no previous convictions. Passing sentence, Judge House told the defendant he had no doubt his judgement had been impaired by alcohol. "You knew you were late for work, you had sent a text to that effect," the judge added. Man arrested after women and girls approached
A man has been arrested following reports that a number of women and girls had been approached by a person who had caused them concern. An employee in a town centre store in Dewsbury contacted officers on Tuesday and also posted about the incident on social media, a West Yorkshire Police spokesperson said. As a result, a 24-year-old man was arrested in the early hours of Thursday and remained in custody. Police said that three further potential victims had also been identified and spoken to by officers, and high visibility patrols would be increased in the town centre over the coming days to offer reassurance to the public. Dewsbury's neighbourhood policing team was aware of comments on social media from other females who said they had been approached by a man in the town centre, the force spokesperson said. Insp Liz Lockwood said officers were working to ensure that all victims were appropriately supported, adding that a "comprehensive investigation" would be carried out. "We will be increasing high visibility patrols in the town centre today and over the coming days to offer reassurance to the public, visit stores and reassure business owners and staff and to collate details of any further victims," she said. "If anyone else has been approached by a man in concerning circumstances that has caused them to feel harassed, alarmed or distressed, then I would urge them to come forward.
