Arsenal v Spurs in Hong Kong? Kai Tak could host first non-UK North London derby

Tatler Asia, which oversaw Lionel Messi's bungled 2024 Hong Kong visit, appear to have gained the upper hand in the battle to bring leading European clubs to Kai Tak Sports Park (KTSP) in July.
The Post was told earlier this month that Liverpool and two of their Premier League rivals would come to Hong Kong as part of their preparations for the 2025-26 season.
Images leaked online this week indicated that Liverpool will play AC Milan on July 26, with Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur contesting the first overseas North London derby on July 31. It was suggested that the matches, which are set to be staged at the new 50,000-seat Kai Tak Stadium, would be jointly promoted by Tatler Asia and Australian company TEG Sport.
All four clubs are remaining coy over their preseason plans, but a source with knowledge of Tatler's proposals said arrangements were at an advanced stage.
A source close to Milan, who were dumped out of the Uefa Champions League by Feyenoord this week, said summer plans were still being drawn up but Hong Kong was among the club's preseason options. Spurs' Korean forward Son Heung-min could be set to play at Kai Tak Stadium in July. Photo: Reuters
A Tottenham Hotspur spokesman, meanwhile, said the club 'still haven't agreed anything regarding our preseason plans'.

Grealish left out of Man City squad for Club World Cup

Grealish left out of Man City squad for Club World Cup Grealish was not among the 27 players named from a possible 35 for City. File photo: Reuters Jack Grealish's future at Manchester City was plunged into further doubt after the England international was left out of Pep Guardiola's squad for the Club World Cup. Despite City naming just 27 players from a possible 35 for the tournament beginning in the United States on June 14, Grealish was omitted alongside former captain Kyle Walker. All four of the club's new signings this week – Rayan Ait-Nouri, Rayan Cherki, Tijani Reijnders and Marcus Bettinelli – are included. Ballon d'Or winner Rodri is also selected after making his comeback from a long-term knee injury just before the end of the Premier League season. Grealish, who remains City's record signing after a US$135 million move from Aston Villa in 2021, has fallen down the pecking order over the past two seasons. He made just seven Premier League starts in the 2024/25 campaign and was notably not summoned from the bench as City went down to a 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final last month. The 29-year-old still has two years left to run on his City contract and his reported US$405,000 wages are a barrier to finding a potential suitor. Guardiola threatened last month he could leave the club if the size of his squad is not cut before the new season begins. Grealish is just one of a number of expected exits, along with Walker. The 35-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at AC Milan, but the Italian giants have not taken up an option to buy. City begin their Club World Cup campaign against Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca in Philadelphia next Wednesday before facing further group games against Al Ain of Abu Dhabi and Juventus. (AFP)

Stricter rules on funding for Hong Kong sports events planned, as Messi fallout continues

Sports events in Hong Kong that want government support are facing a tightening of the rules around funding, sources have told the Post, as the fallout from the Lionel Messi saga continues. Criteria surrounding global relevance, minimum ticket sales and impact have all been under the spotlight as part of a review started by former sports minister Kelvin Yeung Yun-hung, and changes could be implemented before the end of the year. With the Major Sports Events Committee dolling out HK$624.4 million of public money over the past three financial years, officials were also considering introducing a sliding scale of support, rather than paying out as much as HK$17 million at a time to organisers. 'There will be different conditions, say the number of minimum spectators, 80 per cent of the seats must be filled for exhibition matches,' a government source said. 'There must be elements of mega-events, too, and that applies to all applications. 'Grants of different amounts could also be dished out but that's subject to further considerations, we're still exploring the various [possible] tiers.' Netherlands, Finland cruise in World Cup qualifying

Netherlands, Finland cruise in World Cup qualifying Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk was among the scorers in the Netherlands' 8-0 rout of Malta. Photo: AFP Netherlands maintained their winning start to European 2026 World Cup qualifying by thrashing Malta 8-0, while their group rivals Poland lost to Finland in a match interrupted due to a medical emergency in the crowd. The results leave Finland top of Group G on seven points, one ahead of the Dutch who have played two matches less. Poland sit third on six points after three played. In Groningen, the Dutch raced into a three-goal lead against their overawed opponents inside the opening 20 minutes. Memphis Depay converted from the spot on nine minutes, before doubling the lead with a rifled finish from the edge of the box seven minutes later. Depay's brace brought the 31-year-old to 50 international goals – level with former Manchester United and Arsenal striker Robin van Persie as the Netherlands' all-time leading goalscorer. Captain Virgil van Dijk killed the match off as a tie when he stepped onto the ball and arrowed a right-footed finish into the bottom corner from 20 yards. The Oranje then turned on the afterburners inside the final half-hour as Xavi Simons, Donyell Malen, who got two, Noa Lang and Micky van de Ven all netted. Poland began life without leading goalscorer Robert Lewandowski in miserable fashion as they went down 2-1 in Helsinki. The 36-year-old played 158 times for Poland, scoring 85 goals, but announced Sunday he was no longer available for selection so long as coach Michal Probierz remained in charge. The Poles fell behind to Joel Pohjanpalo's 31st-minute penalty, before Benjamin Kallman added a second nine minutes after the break. Jakub Kiwior pulled one back in the 69th minute, shortly before the match was interrupted when a spectator fell ill. After a lengthy stoppage, the final 10 minutes of play resumed but Poland were unable to find an equaliser despite applying relentless pressure on the hosts' goal. Elsewhere, Serbia eased past Andorra 3-0 to move to third in Group K on four points courtesy of an Aleksandar Mitrovic hat-trick. They trail Albania in second by one point and sit level with Latvia after those sides played out a 1-1 draw in Riga. Austria beat San Marino 4-0 to go second in Group H, three points behind leaders Bosnia and Hercegovina who have played an extra match. Marko Arnautovic scored a brace inside the opening quarter-hour, as Michael Gregoritsch and Christoph Baumgartner completed the scoring in Serravalle. Romania defeated Cyprus 2-0, but dropped to third in the group after Austria's second win from two outings. (AFP)
