
Is A Drawbridge Opening the Future of Suitcases?

I was quickly won over by the Roller Pro's unique, soft-yet-structured look: This hybrid suitcase pairs a polycarbonate core with a weatherproof, heavy-duty 550-denier fabric exterior that feels almost like rubbery canvas.
A drawbridge-like opening, gear loops, and other unique details make this durable, weatherproof bag stand out. But it's very pricey, and when it's packed to capacity, it can be frustrating to use.
The details look automobile-inspired — with handles, zipper pulls, and gear loops made of sturdy, sheeny material reminiscent of a seat belt — and an interior made with compression-molded felt that's akin to the lining of a car's trunk. The light gray interior and wrinkle-less felt bottom also make it easy to see and find smaller items that can get lost against a dark lining. It's impressive that a suitcase with this many loops, cords, zippers, compartments, and materials manages to look this streamlined. But it does, in part because of the plethora of color-matched details inside and out.
While I haven't long-term tested the suitcase, I suspect it will also remain good-looking (though I'm curious about how the light color will wear over time). The soft exterior is unlikely to scuff the way the exteriors of hard-sided suitcases do. And the unobtrusive bumper rails on the back have so far done a good job of protecting the suitcase's underside from getting scratched after banging up and down stairs.
The carry-on feels good rolling by your side — it's well balanced, and the 360-degree spinner wheels roll smoothly. And at the bag's most vulnerable points, weatherproof zips offer protection against rain (these zips are not commonly found on standard suitcases). The bag also has four handles (instead of the usual two to three), so you can pull it from any side or even carry it like a tray.
The Roller Pro's extremely thin, carbon-fiber trolley rails replace the thicker telescoping rails found in most bags, and they're among the Roller Pro's big selling points. They're also shorter than most trolley rails I've encountered, but they still worked for our 6-foot-2 luggage expert, writer Kit Dillon.
While the trolley rails do look sleek, I felt a lot of resistance when pushing and pulling them from the higher of the two stop heights. (Peak Design told me this was a known error in some pre-production units and that it would be fixed.) Flatter rails make for a somewhat more pleasant interior packing experience, but ultimately I'm not sure how much space they actually freed up in the bag.

Peak Design has billed the Roller Pro as a total redesign of the suitcase. And while, yes, it's still a zippered box on four wheels, I see what the brand is getting at. Suitcase details that I had considered axioms have been completely rethought.
The drawbridge-like opening is among the biggest changes, and it's one of my favorites. Though we've seen suitcases that open lengthwise, the two adjustable stabilizer cords on each side of the Roller Pro were a revelation. They keep the lid suspended in the air while you're packing and unpacking, so the suitcase has a small footprint, even when it's open. This is especially true in comparison with hard-sided suitcases, which have a clamshell design and must be splayed flat to use. I was also delighted by Peak Design's revamp of the luggage tag. It's only a little bigger than my pointer finger, and it hangs satisfyingly flush from a loop on the side of the bag. The only downside is that the name and address lines are embedded in the tag itself, and that means you have to write directly on the tag with a pen. That is, there is no pull-out card, so you can't change the information once you write it in — a bummer if you move, get a new number, or lend out the luggage. (However, you can purchase a pack of two replacement tags for $20.)
The bag has other thoughtful little extras, including a key tether in the front pocket and a handy little slip pocket (so you don't lose your Bluetooth tracker). There's also a hidden pocket (and message) behind the interior zippered lid that's sized perfectly for a passport — a great feature for the paranoid among us.
I was also impressed with the unobtrusive, color-matched gear loops all over the exterior of the bag. While you could use them for whatever (like hanging a travel pillow, for example), the bag has two detachable bungees that allow you to hitch larger items (like, say, a tripod) on the top or the sides of the bag.
I also enjoyed using the unobtrusive, customizable perimeter cord (a bungee cord inside the bag that criss-crosses on top of the main compartment in adjustable configurations). But it really only keeps items in place instead of compressing them.

It also has a wider mouth with flexible, spandex-like slip pockets, perfect for accommodating whatever weird-shaped stuff you want to stash. And it made me wonder: Is there a reason more pockets aren't made of this joyously flexible material?
While the wide-mouth space is great for small essentials (for me: hand sanitizer, a pill case, a portable charger, and occasionally my phone), I ultimately prefer putting these things in my personal item, so they aren't stuck in the overhead bin during my flight.
In general, I'm not a fan of narrow front pockets, either. They're mostly designed for holding a thin, sleeveless laptop. I'm personally never going to store mine in there, not least because a carry-on always has the chance of being gate-checked.
For me, the front pocket took up too much extra space to justify its inclusion. However, this sleek storage spot could be worth it for travelers who plan to use it as intended. The three zippered pockets on the flap of the interior lid are an incredibly satisfying feature of the Roller Pro. They're made with clear, puncture-proof ripstop mesh, and they're perfect for holding tiny things you might otherwise corral in separate pouches (or just resign yourself to losing), including hair ties, cords, and pens.
But the zippered panel covers interior lid space that I found too narrow to use effectively for more than a few thin items, like a pair of flip-flops and a book. You have the option to roll down the panel, but that means you give up the pockets, and the space isn't that intuitive to use.

I compared the capacity of Peak Design's Roller Pro to two Wirecutter picks by packing them each one with the same stuff: two large and two small Cotopaxi packing cubes, a small rectangular toiletry bag, and two sweaters. For me, an admittedly notorious overpacker, this is the equivalent of a five-day trip. Both the Away Bigger Carry-On (our pick for the best hard-sided suitcase) and the Briggs & Riley Baseline Carry-On (our upgrade pick for best soft-sided suitcase) more seamlessly fit my things.
With the expansion in play, the Roller Pro's listed capacity increases from a fairly small 34 L to a relatively normal 39 L (the difference between bringing one or two more sweatshirts). That being said, I wouldn't personally travel with the expansion open because the thin fabric strip becomes the most vulnerable part of the suitcase, though you can use the zipper as an ad-hoc compression system.
But I found it frustrating to live out of the Roller Pro when I'd filled it to capacity. Part of the issue is that the main compartment has a relatively shallow depth (due to the larger lid), and items kept toppling out of the suitcase when it was open. Due to the relatively shallow depth of the Peak Design suitcase, things kept falling out when it was packed to capacity, an issue I didn't have with the Away or the Briggs & Riley suitcases. I didn't have this issue with the Away Bigger Carry-On (an admittedly larger suitcase), in which I had room left over, and each side of the clamshell adequately cupped my stuff. Nor did I have the issue with the Briggs & Riley Baseline. The latter case has a deeper main compartment and a truly unique supported expansion system, which essentially allows you to make the bag wider when you're living out of it and then compress it down when you're on the road. Indeed, thanks to the expansion system the Briggs & Riley Baseline has a whopping 48 L capacity, 9 more liters than the Roller Pro offers.
In grade school, I hated that when I broke the mold on the three-paragraph essay, I was almost always docked points. So maybe I hadn't quite succeeded, but where was the reward for creativity? How do you innovate without sometimes missing the mark?
So here I want to give Peak Design the recognition it deserves. The Roller Pro is a sturdy and likely very durable suitcase, and I also loved the fresh look and unique design details, especially the drawbridge-like opening, which allows the lid to suspend in the air. The secret stash pocket for your passport, the tiny, unobtrusive luggage tag, and the color-matched gear loops (for attaching items to the outside of the bag) were also standout features.
However, the $600 suitcase was not without flaws, and I found it particularly frustrating to use when it was packed to capacity. For $100 more, the Briggs & Riley Baseline — our upgrade pick for best soft-sided luggage — has a unique compression system that provides an additional 9 liters of packing space, and it's more seamless to use when it's packed full.
That said, consistently light packers who don't mind spending a lot on a suitcase might prefer the Roller Pro alternatives. It's much more pleasant to live out of when it's minimally packed, and it would be especially alluring to someone who plans to use the front pocket as intended.
I can also see the Roller Pro's real appeal for photographers, especially in combination with Peak Design's XL Camera Cube (though that adds another $140 to an already very pricey suitcase). The hybrid construction and weatherproof design make this suitcase an extremely durable choice for protecting delicate items. The light-gray felt interior makes it easy to see and find dark camera equipment. And the gear loops allow you to travel with a tripod. Plus, the very cool drawbridge opening lets you use the whole suitcase a bit like a deep tray while you're working.
In a category full of sameness, this suitcase stands out. Whether it's worth $600, that's up to you.

Overview The 2026 Kia EV6 compact electric SUV is a veritable Swiss army knife. With a spacious five-passenger interior, a choice of several rear- or all-wheel-drive powertrains, and Kia's usual attention to design and features, it's easy to zero in on an EV6 that fits your needs. The dual-motor GT is pricey but packs a 641-horsepower electric punch that enables sub-3.5-second sprints to 60 mph. The Light Standard Range single-motor base model is slower but is roughly $20,000 less expensive. Regardless of how much power it has, every EV6 is responsive and fun to drive. It also boasts impressive charging speeds, taking the battery from 10 to 80 percent in 20 minutes or less on a 350-kW DC fast charger. What's New for 2026? The Kia EV6 received a makeover, a larger battery, and a host of smaller updates for 2025, so we expect no changes for 2026. Pricing and Which One to Buy The price of the 2026 Kia EV6 is expected to start around $45,000 and go up to $66,000 depending on the trim and options. For those folks, we recommend the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive Wind trim, not only because it's the most affordable way to get all-weather traction, but also because the dual motors generate a combined 320 horsepower versus the single motor's lower power output. Going with the standard 19-inch wheels also preserves driving range. Engine, Transmission, and Performance The EV6 is available with a single electric motor mounted on the rear axle that gives it rear-wheel drive, or with electric motors on both front and rear axles that enable all-wheel drive. While all-wheel-drive models pump out either 320 or 641 total horsepower, the rear-drive example makes do with a choice of 167 or 225 horsepower. We drove a 320-hp GT-Line AWD in Europe and enjoyed its satisfying acceleration, agile handling, and adjustable regenerative brake settings. The 601-hp GT (641 with launch mode) GT performance model sits at the top of the lineup and comes with enhancements such as an electronic limited-slip differential, firmer chassis tuning, an adaptive suspension, and stouter brakes. 0–60-MPH Times At our test track, the 320-hp, AWD GT-Line model zipped to 60 mph in just 4.5-seconds. That'll get you to the next EV charging station plenty fast. The rear-wheel drive model provides more range but it also needed 6.7 seconds to reach 60 mph in our testing. If you prioritize maximum straight-line performance, the 576-hp GT has you covered; in our testing, it rushed to 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds. We also tested a 2023 Kia EV6 GT as part of a 0-to-150-to-0 speed test where it returned to a stop in just 31.2 seconds, only a tenth slower than a Toyota Supra. View Exterior Photos Kia Range, Charging, and Battery Life The entry-level Light rear-wheel drive model comes with a 63.0-kWh battery pack with a KIA-estimated range of 237 miles. All other EV6s are equipped with an 84.0-kWh unit. EPA range estimates for the larger pack land at 319 miles for RWD and 295 with AWD, up 9 and 13 miles, respectively, from last year's model with a slightly smaller 77.4-kWh pack. The GT-Line with AWD drops to 270 miles of range, and the mighty GT offers just 231 miles of range. Along with an operating voltage of 800, Kia says its battery can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in under 18 minutes when plugged into a 350-kW fast charger. We tested this claim and confirmed that it's for real. This same setup is also said to add 70 miles in less than 5 minutes. The 11-kW onboard charger is expected to refill the battery from 10 to 100 percent in 7 hours when hooked up to a Level 2 outlet. Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG The EPA hasn't released any fuel economy information for the 2025 or 2026 EV6 yet, but the 2024 single-motor EV6 has a combined EPA rating of up to 117 MPGe; the dual-motor variant is rated at 109 MPGe with the standard 19-inch wheels and 96 MPGe when rolling on the optional 20-inch wheels. Go for the high-performance GT model, and the combined estimate drops to 83 MPGe. MPGe stands for miles per gallon of gas equivalent, an EPA metric that estimates PHEV and EV vehicle fuel efficiency. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo The EV6's interior design and layout are not as daring as the car's exterior styling, but it looks modern and attractive. Although the center console doesn't slide back and forth and there are no front-seat footrests like there are on the Ioniq 5, the EV6 mixes high-tech content, such as a large, digitized dashboard screen, with practical elements like a floating center console containing clever storage solutions. Other touches that stand out are the two-tone, two-spoke steering wheel, the prominent start button on the center console, and the tastefully placed gold accents throughout the cockpit. The EV6 has a flat floor and a wheelbase—the distance between the front and rear wheels—that's as long as the three-row, mid-size Kia Telluride's, so passenger space is generous. There are also 28 cubic feet of cargo space behind the back seat and 54 cubic feet in total with the rear seatbacks folded flat. There's more storage space under the front trunk, too, but it's not as big as expected. View Interior Photos Kia Infotainment and Connectivity The infotainment system runs through a 12.3-inch touchscreen that's an extension of the EV6's 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. However, the design and performance of the menu structure and navigation are unimpressive. Along with the ability to accept over-the-air updates and respond to myriad voice commands, the system includes popular features such as wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, wireless smartphone charging, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Additionally, the stereo can be upgraded to a Meridian unit with 14 speakers. Safety and Driver-Assistance Features Kia packs the EV6 with a variety of standard driver-assistance technology that includes automated emergency braking and automatic high beams. Several other optional assists can be added for an even safer experience. 2026 Porsche Macan EV Review, Pricing, and Specs
Overview The Macan is Porsche's bestseller, so it's no surprise that this is the hallowed automaker's first gas model to make the leap to electric-only propulsion. All three of the Macan EV's powertrains provide immediate thrust without compromising the refined chassis dynamics that make Porsche's compact luxury SUV a standout among less athletic competitors. The Macan EV pairs its standout performance with impressive practicality and ample range, offering roomy cabin quarters and up to 308 miles of grin-inducing driving on a single charge. The Macan EV is sold as an alternative to its gas counterpart (reviewed separately), though it is good enough to be a worthy replacement. What's New for 2026? With the introduction of the rear-wheel-drive base model and the top-tier 4S trim last year, Porsche has decided to take a breather on Macan EV updates for 2026. Pricing and Which One to Buy The price of the 2026 Porsche Macan EV is expected to start around $78,000 and go up to $108,000 depending on the trim and options. Porsche's business model includes offering a very long list of options, packages, paint colors, and wheel designs, which is great for creating a Macan EV that's perfectly tailored to your taste. But it can also increase the temptation to spend a lot more than the Macan EV's base price. For that reason, we'll leave the customization up to you and your budget, but we do recommend the Premium package, which adds 14-way power-adjustable front seats with heat and ventilation, heated rear seats, four-zone automatic climate control, and a Bose stereo. EV Motor, Power, and Performance The Macan EV's base powertrain is a single, rear-mounted electric motor that can produce up to 355 horsepower when its overboost function is activated; otherwise, it puts 335 horsepower out to the rear wheels. The 4, 4S, and Turbo models feature all-wheel drive thanks to an electric motor on each axle. While the Macan 4 EV produces a maximum of 402 horsepower, the 4S pumps out 509 hp, and the Turbo ups the ante to 630 hp. The 4 tops out at a claimed 136 mph, the 4S at 149 mph, and the Turbo at 161 mph. All models feature air suspension with adaptive dampers, and the 4S and Turbo can be had with a torque vectoring system. Essentially an electronically controlled differential on the rear axle, it helps to make the crossover feel more nimble on a curvy road. Rear-wheel steering is also optional on the Macan EV. We've had the chance to drive the Macan EV in nearly all its configurations and came away impressed with its performance. While the acceleration of the base RWD and 4 models isn't particularly quick, the extra power in the 4S and Turbo models gives them the neck-snapping thrust EVs are generally known for. Handling is quite engaging, and the Macan EV's battery pack gives it a low center of gravity, giving it a stable mid-corner feel. The steering is quick, although we don't feel the calibration is up to Porsche's typical standards, and the optional rear-wheel steering system shortens the Macan EV's turning radius at low speeds and provides additional stability at higher speeds. 0–60-MPH Times At our test track, the Turbo model got to 60 mph in just 2.9 seconds, significantly quicker than the gas-powered Macan GTS. The 4S, 4, and base models will be progressively slower, but even the least powerful RWD Macan should get to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds by our estimates. When we get a chance to strap our test gear to the lower-powered Macan EV variants, we'll update this story with acceleration results. View Exterior Photos Porsche Range, Charging, and Battery Life The Macan EV utilizes a 95.0-kWh battery and supports DC fast-charging at up to 270 kW. In our testing, we got the battery from 10 percent to 90 percent charge in 33 minutes. While the Macan EV uses an 800-volt architecture to achieve such charging speeds, it also has a novel feature that essentially splits the battery into two 400-volt units when hooked up to a 400-volt charger, allowing charging speeds up to 135 kW. The Macan EV is also capable of AC charging at up to 11 kW. The EPA estimates that the Macan EV has EPA range estimates of 308 miles for the Macan 4, and 288 miles for the 4S and the Turbo. When we get the chance to test its real-world range, we'll update this section with results. Fuel Economy and Real-World MPGe The EPA hasn't released any fuel economy information for the 2026 Macan EV yet, but last year's Macan 4 EV delivered 107 MPGe city and 89 MPGe highway. The Macan Turbo EV was rated for 99 MPGe city and 84 MPGe Highway. The 4S model received 98 MPGe city and 83 MPGe highway ratings. We haven't yet tested the Macan EV on our real-world 75-mph highway fuel economy test, but we'll post the results here when we do. How government can advance innovation
Innovation is a cornerstone of a vibrant economy. Entrepreneurs often get a lot of the credit for big tech breakthroughs and disruptive ideas. But they're not the only ones driving innovation: government can also have a big part to play, according to Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey. Since taking office in 2023, Healey has enacted several policies aimed at boosting the economy, from tax cuts to the largest housing investment in state history. Just a few months ago, she announced an economic development project: the Massachusetts AI Hub, which is described as offering the infrastructure, business development resources, and ethical guidance needed to strengthen the state's position as a center of AI innovation. At the recent Think Conference hosted by IBM, Healey spoke with Stephanie Mehta, CEO and chief content officer of Mansueto Ventures (parent company of Fast Company), about the steps her state has taken to advance collaboration with industry, academia, and entrepreneurs to support advances in AI. Here are four takeaways from the discussion. (Some quotes were edited for clarity and length.) 1. Government support helps big ideas take off. Bringing innovative ideas to life takes teamwork, and the public and private sectors can be a powerful pair. 'The only way to address the challenges of today, to solve the world's problems, is for government to work directly in partnership with private industry,' Healey said. Take AI. Healey explained how the technology requires massive computing power and uses enormous amounts of energy. In Massachusetts, Healey saw an opportunity to help make it easier for energy supply to keep pace with the increasing demand from the state's AI industry. She championed legislation to simplify permitting and siting of energy infrastructure, speeding up the process for bringing more energy online. Healey also believes government can play a pivotal role in helping to support AI entrepreneurs at their earliest stages. To that end, she recently announced a $31 million grant to expand the supply of compute and data capacity for those in the AI sector. In addition, the state's AI Hub is exploring partnerships to create an accelerator program for entrepreneurs developing AI technologies. 2. Progress must be sustainable—and inclusive. Businesses often consider a range of internal and external stakeholders when making major decisions. But it's up to governments to take the broadest view, crafting policies and making investments that address issues such as climate change and foster greater economic participation, Healey said. In the case of AI, that involves addressing the technology's environmental impact. The Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center, a collaboration between several of the state's public and private universities, provides infrastructure for computationally intensive research. Much of that power comes via renewable energy from solar arrays and a hydroelectric dam, helping to reduce the carbon footprint associated with scaling AI. Meanwhile, Healey has looked for opportunities to ensure that the benefits of AI are enjoyed by all Massachusetts residents, not just some businesses. She recently assembled a taskforce, including labor officials, who considered what AI adoption will mean through a workforce lens and to offer strategies to manage the potential impacts on the labor market. 'We looked at what we need to do to upskill those who are going to have to participate in what will be an AI economy,' Healey said. 3. Innovative thinking will let organizations maximize their AI investment. To show how generative AI can make organizations more efficient without leaving workers behind, the Massachusetts government decided to start using the technology itself. To prepare to take the AI plunge, leaders did their research. As part of the InnovateMA program, Healey invited students from Northeastern University to research productive AI use cases in state agencies. For instance, students created generative AI prompts that helped Department of Transportation employees wade through hundreds of pages of rules and regulations to advance transportation infrastructure projects. Tasks that used to take several days could now be completed in minutes, and workers felt more empowered to tackle other projects. 'Our employees loved it,' Healey said. 4. Crisis can be a catalyst for innovation. When it comes to disruption, Healey said that she draws inspiration from the business world, embracing solutions-oriented strategies that helped her turn crisis into opportunity. Healey looked to leverage assets in Massachusetts to strengthen the state's own investment in innovation when federal government spending was being cut. She immediately reached out to Massachusetts's teaching hospitals, colleges and universities, and private equity investors to determine what the state needed to do to stay competitive globally. Healey expects that by continuing to fund science and research at the state level amid federal cuts, Massachusetts will emerge from the crisis even stronger in these areas. At the same time, government needs to be a model for thinking beyond the bottom line, she said. 'For the purposes of the creation of a better world, a world where there is an abundance of energy, of housing, of healthcare, of transportation, of economic opportunity and prosperity for every child, it's got to come with a little bit of a broader lens.'
