Nolan Schanuel's first career walk-off hit gives Angels 2-1 10-inning win over Athletics

(AP) — Nolan Schanuel hit a single into shallow center field in the 10th inning for the first walk-off hit of his career to drive in Jo Adell and give the Los Angeles Angels a 2-1 win over the Athletics on Tuesday night. Reid Detmers (2-2) struck out two of three batters to strand the automatic runner in the top of the 10th. Hogan Harris (1-1) took the loss for the A's, who have lost 22 of 26 games. The Angels trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the eighth when Travis d'Arnaud hit A's left-hander T.J. McFarland's first pitch for a pinch-hit homer and a 1-1 tie. Angels starter José Soriano allowed one run and two hits and struck out a career-best 12 in seven innings. He walked two. He threw a career-high 110 pitches, 71 for strikes, and induced 22 swinging strikes. The A's Mitch Spence, making his second start since being moved from the bullpen, gave up three hits, struck out four and walked none in five scoreless innings. Soriano was virtually untouchable through five no-hit innings in which he racked up nine strikeouts and walked one. He lost his no-hit bid in the sixth when Brent Rooker drove an RBI double to left-center field just beyond the reach of a diving Adell for a 1-0 A's lead. Halifax Tides beat visiting Ottawa Rapid to record 1st NSL victory
Social Sharing The Halifax Tides have finally hit the win column in the Northern Super League. A goal in the 75th minute by Gunnhildur Yrsa Jonsdottir snapped a 1-1 tie and lifted the Tides to a 2-1 victory over the visiting Ottawa Rapid on Tuesday at Wanderers Grounds. Olivia Scott gave the Rapid a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute, but Megumi Nakamura tied the match in the 58th minute. The Tides outshot the Rapid 19-8 — and 7-2 with on target shots — and improved to one win, five losses and one draw in seven NSL outings. The Rapid slipped to three wins, two losses and two draws in seven games. Canada wins inaugural Canadian Shield Tournament despite penalty shootout loss to Ivory Coast
Social Sharing Canada won the inaugural Canadian Shield Tournament on Tuesday night despite losing to African champion Ivory Coast 5-4 in a penalty shootout. The game went to a shootout after it finished knotted at 0-0 after 90 minutes. The 30th-ranked Canadian men finished with four points, one ahead of No. 86 New Zealand and No. 25 Ukraine and two ahead of No. 41 Ivory Coast. Victory was assured for Canada just by getting to the shootout, given it would finish the night with at least four points — with two points for a shootout win and one for a shootout loss — while no one else had more than three. A regulation win was worth three points at the tournament. Jonathan David, Mathieu Choiniere, Derek Cornelius and Ismael Kone scored for Canada in the shootout. Badra Ali Sangare stopped Tani Oluwaseyi and Luc de Fougerolles. The last time it faced an African side was at the World Cup in Qatar in December 2022 when it lost 2-1 to Morocco in its final group-stage game. The Ivory Coast squad draws on players from clubs in Belgium, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Scotland, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland and Turkey. Canada heads to the CONCACAF Gold Cup next, opening against No. 95 Honduras on June 17 in Vancouver before completing Group B play in Houston against No. 90 Curacao and No. 81 El Salvador on June 21 and 24, respectively. Canada went into Tuesday's match with a 7-4-5 record under Marsch, with one of those ties turning into a penalty shootout loss to Uruguay and another into a shootout win over Venezuela. His previous three games in Canada — against Ukraine, Suriname and Panama — were all victories. Ivory Coast returns to World Cup qualifying play in September. It currently leads Group F in African qualifying with a 5-0-1 record, one point ahead of No. 79 Gabon in the six-country group that also includes No. 140 Burundi, No. 111 Kenya, No. 126 Gambia and the 203rd-ranked Seychelles.
