Private Eye cartoonist Barry Fantoni dies aged 85
Private Eye editor Ian Hislop said: 'Barry was a brilliant multi-talented writer, artist and musician.
'He was an integral part of Private Eye's comic writing team from the early days in the sixties and I hugely enjoyed collaborating with him when I joined the magazine later on.
'He created formats and characters and jokes that are still running and he was for a long time the voice of the great poet and obituarist E J Thribb. So Farewell then Barry.'
Fantoni was a long-term stalwart of the Private Eye editorial team from 1963 and created some of its most famous characters, most notably fictitious obituary poet-in-residence, E J Thribb.
Best known for his work with the satirical magazine, Fantoni was also a diary cartoonist for news publication the Times and produced caricatures for listings magazine Radio Times from the mid 1960s.
Entertainer Sir Bruce Forsyth, former prime minister Harold Wilson, DJ Tony Blackburn and comedian Sir Ken Dodd were among the stars he turned into caricatures.
Born on February 28 1940, he studied at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts from the age of 14 after accepting the Wedgewood Scholarship for the Arts.
Following expulsion he moved to the prestigious Slade School of Fine Art and became a figure in the 1960s pop art movement.
In the early half of the decade he wrote scripts for the BBC's satirical show, That Was the Week That Was, before presenting the corporation's fashion and music programme, A Whole Scene Going, which reflected on the tastes and times of Britain's under 21s and included big names like The Who, Sandie Shaw and Twiggy.
He also had stints as the Times' art critic and was a record reviewer for Punch magazine in the 1970s.
In 2010 he announced his retirement from Private Eye after 47 years.
Speaking to the Independent about his departure, he said: 'It was just time to leave. I'd done it. The establishment isn't even worth puncturing any more.'
In 2011 the cartoonist, who was also the author of several detective books, had his archive of 3,500 original Times cartoons auctioned at Bonhams for £4,200.
He leaves behind his partner Katie.

Eamonn Holmes says 'Ruth does all the hard stuff' as he opens up about shared custody
Eamonn Holmes has shared an update on rescue dog Maggie this week following his split from Ruth Langsford, with whom he had adopted the canine companion over a decade ago Presenter Eamonn Holmes wrote about his ex Ruth Langsford in an update about their rescue dog Maggie this week. He's given an insight into the arrangements between them after having paid tribute to Maggie over the weekend. Eamonn, 65, and Ruth, 65, announced last year that they had decided to separate after 14 years of marriage. The former couple, who also have a son together, were later said to be involved in a custody dispute over canine Maggie, whom they had adopted as a family in 2011. After posting about Maggie yesterday, Eamonn returned to Instagram this afternoon with an update. It included him paying tribute to Ruth, who regularly posts about taking Maggie on walks, and teased over his plans for the future. Eamonn told his followers that Maggie will feature in the Times this week. He wrote: "So much interest and Love for Maggie following yesterday's post to the extent that she is going to star in @thetimes on line from tomorrow and this week's Sunday Times." The former This Morning host, who has experience health issues in recent years, went on to say that his ex does "all the hard stuff" with Maggie. He said: "Ruth does all the hard stuff with her because of my Wheelchair restrictions but working hard to hopefully get better soon and adopt another #Rescue #Dog like we did from @dogstrust all those years ago!" The presenter added: "Maggie changed my life and she was making me very happy in The Sunshine today. In many ways she reminds me of my dearly departed Mum - a really bad knee and hardly any teeth left but not bad for a 17 year old!" Eamonn, who is a patron of rescue group K-9 Angels, concluded: "Please try to Adopt and Not Shop if u can. from organisations like @thek9angels and @dogstrust Enjoy the Sunshine but please be aware of your dog in a car and it's little feet on hot pavements. Bye from Maggie and Me." The journalist, who used Randy Newman's song You've Got A Friend in Me from Toy Story (1995) in the post, had posted about Maggie yesterday. Alongside photos, he said in his previous post: "17 years apart ... and we r both still going - JUST. Maggie and Me #dogstrust #adoptdontshop." Eamonn and Ruth were said to be having "difficult conversations" about where Maggie would live following their separation. There were even previously reports of a custody dispute over the dog between the former couple. It was however suggested in May last year that Maggie was likely to end up primarily with Loose Women panelist Ruth. A source told the Sun at the time that Maggie is "like a daughter" to the exes, who were both said to "dote" on her. The source further told the outlet: "But she's getting on and they know she needs stability. It's a case of who can give her that." They added that the prospect of "giving her up" was "heartbreaking" for GB News presenter Eamonn. They said that Eamonn "adores" her but teased over the canine ending up with his ex. The source said last year: "But if Ruth is able to get out and about and walk her more, then it may well be that she gets Maggie in the split."

Patrick Kielty's family reveal key moment they thought Cat Deeley marriage was over
Patrick Kielty's family reveal key moment they thought Cat Deeley marriage was over The couple have insisted they would 'continue to be united as loving parents to their children' Patrick Kielty and Cat Deeley at the 20th Irish Film and Television Academy (IFTA) Awards ceremony at the Dublin Royal Convention Centre. (Image: PA) The family of Patrick Kielty were reportedly left fuming over a pivotal moment that signalled the end of his marriage to Cat Deeley. Last month, the celebrity couple released a joint statement confirming their separation, stating: "We have taken the decision to end our marriage and are now separated. There is no other party involved." They added: "We will continue to be united as loving parents to our children and would therefore kindly ask for our family privacy to be respected. There will be no further comment." It's believed that Cat Deeley's absence from the funeral of Patrick's mother Mary in March caused significant upset within the Kielty family, with many seeing this as a clear indication that their union was irreparably broken. A family member explained to the Daily Mail their disappointment, saying: "Whatever rockiness was going on in the marriage, something as a momentous as his mother's funeral, you would make up even temporarily and just put your 'best face' on as we say in Northern Ireland". They continued: "Cat obviously knew how close Patrick was to Mary and she should have come to be by his side, a hand on his shoulder as he buried his mother. "The fact that she stayed in London and presented This Morning on the day, it's not been forgotten." For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter The source revealed that people remain stunned by Cat's behaviour, stating: "It was the point when we all realised that that marriage had ended." Patrick Kielty and Cat Deeley arriving for the London premiere of the Ballywalter, at the Mayfair Hotel in London. (Image: PA) A representative explained to Mirror at the time: "Cat remained at home to be there for her two young children before and after school on this very sad day." Patrick's relatives are reportedly supporting the broadcaster as he navigates what lies ahead. The pair first crossed paths whilst presenting BBC's Fame Academy back in 2002. Nevertheless, they didn't step out publicly as a romantic item until nine years afterwards in 2011. Merely twelve months later in September 2012, they exchanged vows during a ceremony in Rome and welcomed two children together. Whilst Cat appears alongside Ben Shephard on This Morning, Northern Irish host Patrick fronts RTE chat show The Late Late Show, having succeeded Ryan Tubridy in 2023. The timing of the couple's separation remains uncertain. Nevertheless, with the pair living apart due to clashing work commitments between Ireland and London, this is believed to have played a role in their relationship breakdown. Cat's final mention of Patrick on her Instagram account occurred in October 2023. On that occasion, she shared a peculiar 90s-inspired collection of images featuring them both. She captioned it: "Slightly terrifying but obsessed." Article continues below The couple's last public outing was a month prior. She also posted a snapshot of the two of them at the event on her social media, beaming as they prepared for the occasion and later seated among the audience.
