Winter Haven Regional Airport to use digital remote tower system to enhance safety, first in nation
The Brief
Winter Haven Regional Airport is looking for ways to enhance safety and efficiency.
The airport currently shares a frequency with five other airports.
City officials are pushing the FAA for a dedicated frequency.
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - As the Winter Haven Regional Airport gets busier and busier every year, the airport is looking for new and inventive ways to enhance safety and efficiency.
The airport is home to multiple flight schools and has experienced explosive growth.
By the numbers
"Two years ago, we were averaging 55,000 to 60,000 flight operations a year," said Airport Director, Troy Heidel. "We're now averaging 80,000 operations a year."
The airport currently shares a frequency with five other airports, so city officials are pushing the FAA for a dedicated frequency since they account for 40 percent of the traffic on the channel.
"Pilots for several different airports call their position in the pattern. It can create confusion," said Heidel. 'Was he on final for Winter Haven or Apopka?' So having that dedicated frequency can eliminate some of that confusion."
A midair collision in 2023 between a fixed-wing plane and a seaplane claimed four lives, including a student pilot and instructor. It's a tragic reminder of the risks posed by congested airspace.
Dig deeper
By the end of this year, Winter Haven will have a digital remote tower system with a 360-degree camera and sensor array that can automatically detect and predict air traffic.
The tower, which will begin with a testing phase, will be operated remotely from 10 miles away at the Bartow Airport.
"Polk County will be the first example of where a remote digital tower at one airport is provided to another airport," said Jake Polumbo with the airport's Safety Committee.
"When you have somebody on the ground and their dedicated purpose is to do nothing but guide and direct traffic, it really helps eliminate the variables in the airspace and give that people a single focus and gives them some direction to fly the sky," said Heidel.
What's next
The remote tower system is fully funded by a more than $1 million Florida Department of Transportation grant.

Airlines offering vouchers, new flights for passengers impacted by airport delays during Army parade in DC
Passengers flying through Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport on Saturday will experience delays as the Army celebrates its 250th birthday with a parade and flyover in Washington, DC. The celebration, which coincides with President Donald Trump's birthday, will impact vehicle and airline traffic. The Federal Aviation Administration said it will issue temporary flight restrictions for the Washington area during the celebration, which begins with a parade at 6:30 p.m. and ends with fireworks at 9:45 p.m. From 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, 65 flights are scheduled to arrive at Reagan airport in Northern Virginia and 39 are scheduled to depart, according to Cirium, an aviation analytics firm. The airport is accommodating for the military flyovers along the parade route and a fireworks display, according to its website. The FAA is working with the Department of Defense to finalize a flyover plan, which will detail the aircraft involved. 'The FAA will implement traffic management initiatives at DCA before, during, and after the event to ensure safety and will facilitate a return to normal operations once the event concludes,' the agency said in a statement. 'During the peak of the celebration, the TMI stops all arrivals and departures.' United Airlines told CNN it is offering a travel waiver for Reagan flyers and is adding two additional departures and two arrivals at Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia as an alternative. Delta Air Lines has a fare-difference waiver for passengers who want to move their booked travel to another day. Southwest Airlines said passengers on the approximately 20 scheduled flights can anticipate some delays, but it is planning for no cancellations. There is also a travel waiver in place for Southwest flyers. Alaska Airlines' exposure is fairly limited during the celebration window, and the airline canceled one flight to San Francisco International Airport and rebooked it to Dulles. It estimates the three flights scheduled during the time frame to be delayed for an hour. The hold on airport traffic comes after the January midair collision between an American Airlines regional jet and an Army Black Hawk military helicopter. The crash, which killed 67 people, led to a ban on helicopter traffic on a four-mile stretch over the Potomac River.

You Can Use Apple Wallet for Your Passport—but Only for This 1 Type of Air Travel
Domestic travel in the U.S. is about to get easier for certain smartphone users. Apple announced the rollout of a new digital passport that will soon be available on iOS for Apple Wallet users. This digital ID will be accepted by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) for boarding domestic flights instead of a physical ID. Apple announced the new feature at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference on June 9. While this new change will make domestic travel easier for many Apple smartphone and watch users, the digital ID is not a replacement for a physical passport and can only be used for travel for domestic flights. It will not be accepted by TSA for international flights. For travelers flying internationally, it will still be necessary to present a physical passport in order to board a flight. 'When you use your license or ID at a TSA checkpoint, you need to authenticate with the Face ID or Touch ID associated with your license or ID before your phone presents your information to the identity reader,' the Apple website states. 'Depending on where you present your license or ID, there might be additional requirements. For example, when you present your license or ID to the TSA, their identity reader captures your image for comparison with the image presented from your license or ID in Apple Wallet.' There are some exceptions to digital ID's availability. The ID in Apple Wallet generally requires an iPhone 8 or higher, equipped with iOS 16.5 or later. In California, the ID requires iPhone XS or later with iOS 17.5 or later. For Puerto Rico, it is also necessary to have an iPhone XS or later model, but it requires iOS 18.1 at least. Travelers should confirm that their devices support the digital ID before they try to use it at an airport. Across U.S. airports new Real ID rules went into effect on May 7. The new regulations mean travelers on domestic flights must present upgraded state-issue IDs and driver's licenses in order to use those documents to fly. (Domestic travelers can also use passports to board their flights.) Perhaps the introduction of the Apple digital ID will offer another option and make it easier for domestic travelers to have multiple options of IDs to present to TSA when they fly.
