Thug who slit 'good citizen's' throat dies in HMP Shotts

Glasgow Times30-04-2025

Kirk McIntyre died in HMP Shotts in North Lanarkshire on Friday, April 25, 2025, the Scottish Prison Service (SPS) said.
In August 2018, we reported how a 'good citizen' who found a handbag was brutally killed amid claims he had instead nicked it.

Frederick McGettigan had done his 'civic duty' by giving the item to police when he discovered it beside a canal in July 2017.
However, Kirk later turned up at the 51-year-old's flat in Auchinairn in Bishopbriggs.
(Image: Newsquest) In court, it was revealed that he wrongly believed that the innocent Mr McGettigan took the bag from the house of someone he knew.
However, Kirk went after his frail victim before slitting his throat with a knife. After the incident, during the trial at the High Court in Glasgow, Kirk denied murder.

Ultimately, the brute was jailed for life and ordered to spend a minimum of 20 years locked behind bars after being convicted.
During the hearing, a judge told Kirk, from Perth, that the killing was 'barbaric and cruel'.
The trial heard how Mr McGettigan, known as Ricky, had found the bag at the Forth and Clyde canal in Kirkintilloch.
The discovery came during an early-hours walk. He often went out at that time as he suffered from the ear condition, tinnitus.
Mr McGettigan then handed the bag into the local police station.
Days later, on August 6, 2017, raging Kirk suddenly appeared at his door. The victim was then brutally attacked with a blade and left for dead.
Following Kirk's death, the SPS has said Police Scotland has been advised of the matter.
Meanwhile, his death has also been reported to the Procurator Fiscal, and a Fatal Accident Inquiry will be held in due course.

A Scottish Prison Service spokesperson said: 'Every death, whether in prison custody or in our communities, is a tragedy for all those who knew and supported the individual.
'Following the death of someone in our care, Police Scotland are advised, and the matter reported to the Procurator Fiscal. Fatal Accident Inquiries are held in due course.'

Neal Ascherson: Gazans paying the price for Israel's military failure

The lesson of the past three years in Gaza is that Israel's war there has been a gross military failure. In reality, Israel's army is incompetent and disorganised. The weakness is in tactics, training and morale, and it's the people of Gaza who are paying for it. The IDF, staggering under the weight of every kind of sub-nuclear weaponry and intelligence on land, air or sea, has been unable to crush a far smaller urban guerrilla force apparently using only small arms, booby-traps and a few rocket launchers. READ MORE: Palestinian jazz singer to share rich heritage through music at Scottish festival This is partly because the Israelis use the old American tactics of the Second World War: don't enter a built-up area which might contain enemies, but first bomb it to rubble. The drawback is that this creates a perfect landscape for snipers hiding in the ruins, which is what has happened in Gaza. As the war in Iraq has shown, this is the kind of fighting that advancing soldiers most dread. House-to-house combat in undestroyed streets is less dangerous, but it's a grim routine which requires prolonged training. And the available evidence suggests that the basic training of Israeli recruits is astonishingly poor and erratic. Soldiers who commit atrocities are usually frightened soldiers. They are also burned-out soldiers, no longer reliable, who should at once be taken out of action before they do more damage. Some of the IDF's crimes against civilians have an element of revenge: it's wrong to underestimate the trauma left by Hamas's insane orgy of murder in October 2023. More often, it seems, the killings have been the reaction of ill-trained and scared men, possibly after suffering a comrade casualty, whose officers and unit commanders have totally failed to lead and reassure them. To explain is not, of course, to excuse. But old-fashioned 'discipline', the traditional remedy for fear, is hard to impose on young men from a proudly self-assertive society of many sects and origins. None of those qualifications apply to the men and women carrying out the indiscriminate bombardment of Gaza from the air, the daily slaughter of innocent families, at no risk to themselves. They are parties to a deliberate crime against humanity. READ MORE: Jeremy Corbyn to table Chilcot-style Gaza inquiry bill in the Commons But the IDF on the ground in Gaza is illustrating a great change in the attitude of 'Western' countries toward warfare. This is the intense and growing reluctance of soldiers and commanders to take casualties and risk lives. These days, a pimply youth blowing a whistle and ordering a trenchful over the top into the machine guns would only get one answer: Gonnae no dae that! But is this proof of a slow spread of compassion and humanity? Or does it only mean that mass killing is now conducted by remote-control drones or by button-pushers in another continent? Perhaps Gaza can show us.

Extremist sows seeds of racism to aid Reform in Scottish by-election

Richard McFarlane makes hate-filled banners and posters from his flat in Bellshill A far-right extremist injecting hate-filled racism into a bitter by-election contest is today exposed by the Daily Record. Richard McFarlane is a key activist for fascist group Patriotic Alternative and has produced a series of racist banners and leaflets urging voters to back Nigel Farage's Reform party. ‌ The Daily Record has previously exposed how Patriotic Alternative and Scottish extreme right wing influencer David Clews have agreed to support Reform, hoping their racist followers can infiltrate the party and increase their influence. ‌ Thursday's by-election in Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse is their first serious attempt to put their plan into action. McFarlane has been targeting shoppers, motorists and even children with his megaphone rants in recent days, stirring hatred with banners that include 'Scotland Built By White People'. At the war memorial at Bothwell Bridge the former independence supporter has also customised racist messages like 'Scotland too white, Anas?' aimed at Scottish Labour Leader Anas Sarwar. McFarlane's banners are accompanied by 'Vote Reform' banners. One local who contacted the Record expressed disgust for McFarlane's antics, saying: 'He is, in most people's eyes, an oddball and an idiot. ‌ 'But he is screaming down his megaphone for people to vote for Reform - and Farage and co will happily take votes from wherever they get them. 'McFarlane's messages are direct and blunt and fairly vicious on immigration. He goes further than Reform would get away with, which is saying something. 'He is a very useful idiot for Reform and if he helps nudge them forward, Reform could get a good result. Even second place would be hugely significant and symbolic for them in a Scottish seat.' ‌ When approached by the Daily Record, McFarlane, 59, admitted being the man who painted a sign saying: 'Bothwell Bridge was built by white people.' He said: 'I'm campaigning at arm's length for Reform. ‌ 'We've focused a lot of our campaign at Bothwell Bridge because it as the scene of a historic battle and we believe we will overcome. 'We believe that all illegal immigrants should be repatriated immediately - but that is just a starting point. 'We are battling against a revisionism in our history, one that tells people that it was black people who built Stonehenge. We are fighting back.' ‌ The source said: 'If the rantings of McFarlane made a significant difference to this election it would be a tragedy.' In 2022 McFarlane was compared to a smurf by a sheriff when he turned up at court in blue face paint. He was convicted of sending a hate-filled homophobic letter to then First Minister Nicola Sturgeon. ‌ The rant was filled with references to Derek Mackay, a former SNP finance minister, and also contained several biblical quotations. The former soldier was reprimanded by Sheriff John Cook, who ordered him to wipe his face clean before the trial could commence. ‌ The letter sent by McFarlane, from Bellshill, Lanarkshire, stated that he believed homosexuality 'leads to paedophilia which leads to bestiality'. McFarlane, an unemployed HGV driver, was placed on a community payback ordered to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work. Reform's political rivals last night blamed Nigel Farage for providing a platform for extremist views. ‌ A spokesperson for Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar said: 'The people of Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse will see through this pathetic and shameful attempt to sew division and hatred. 'Racism and conspiracy theory has no place in our society. 'Reform should be ashamed of these tactics by some of their supporters.' ‌ 'Anas Sarwar is a proud Scot that worked in our NHS. He is making the case every day for a better Scotland for all.' The spokesperson added: 'Regardless of our politics, his love and loyalty to our great country should be unquestionable.' ‌ The Daily Record previously revealed that Patriot Alternative made a pact with far right influencer and conspiracy theory obsessive David Clews - who runs the Unity News Network website - to openly infiltrate Reform UK. Clews and PA leader Mark Collett - a neo-Nazi and former BNP leader - urged their followers to take up positions within Reform in order for them to reap the political gains later. McFarlane's ranting in places like Hamilton, Stonehouse and Bothwell were the first evidence of their plan in action. ‌ The by-election campaign took an ugly turn last week when Reform openly launched an online attack advert on Sarwar. The online Facebook ad included an image of Sarwar next to the words: 'Anas Sarwar has said he will prioritise the Pakistani community.' Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! All eyes are on the by-election as it could show that Reform can make a real impact in areas where they would previously have lost their deposit due to meagre poll results. The party swept the board in English local elections, crushing Tory and Labour support up and down the country. ‌ First Minister John Swinney has tried to galvanise support by ruling out Labour's candidate Davy Russell - who has been accused of dodging any televised debate and being 'anonymous'. Swinney claims it is a two horse race between SNP candidate Katy Loudon and Reform's Ross Lambie. Reform UK has distanced itself from Patriotic Alternative. A Reform UK spokesman said: 'These banners are nothing to do with Reform UK, we have no connection whatsoever with this group.'

Police will fire sticky tracker ‘darts' onto vehicles to avoid deadly high-speed chases

Police Scotland is to pilot the high-tech GPS kit in a bid to avoid hot pursuits which put the public at risk. Police will fire sticky tracker 'darts' onto vehicles to slash the danger posed by high-speed chases in Scotland. The force has shelled out £450,000 to pilot high-tech kit which allows cops to launch GPS devices onto cars and stalk suspects remotely in a bid to avoid a hot pursuit through the streets. ‌ The move comes after a string of officers were injured and members of the public were killed as a result of car chases in recent years and follows the lead of other police forces in the UK and US. ‌ Police Scotland confirmed it would be delivering a pilot of the devices 'in selected areas of Scotland'. And a road safety expert yesterday said their use could be a 'significant step' in reducing the threat police pursuits pose to the public. Nicholas Lyes, Policy and Standards Director at IAM RoadSmart, a charity formerly known as The Institute Of Advanced Motorists, said: 'Despite the fact police are highly trained in pursuits like these they still pose a potential danger to our roads. 'While the police are highly trained, the person that they're chasing is clearly not. Every time there is a chase on the road the risk to pedestrians and everyone else goes up significantly. 'Any technological advance that can reduce the chances of this happening could be a significant step. ‌ 'While this doesn't necessarily stop the criminals who are being chased from driving really dangerously, it can reduce the amount of time they're on the road because police can track them and stop them more quickly.' The contract for the new trackers was awarded to GMK Ltd - a top supplier of firearms and related tactical products into the UK Police, Emergency Services, and Ministry of Defence. ‌ In the US, several police departments have started using StarChase hand held or vehicle-mounted launchers that fire foam 'dart' projectiles with a heat-activated sticky glue at fleeing vehicles - hailing the trackers as a major safety tool protecting communities and officers. StarChase's exclusive supplier in the UK is GMK. In 2022, Surrey and Sussex Police were part of a trial of the new technology. ‌ The force deployed StarChase multiple times in a six month period, nine of which stopped the pursuit from developing. In Scotland, the dangers of police chases have been repeatedly highlighted by a string of serious crashes. ‌ On Saturday, a dramatic police chase ended with a car going into the River Clyde. Police pursued a car carrying two males at around 9pm after the vehicle allegedly failed to stop on Law Street in Glasgow. A teenager was later arrested. ‌ In January, a police officer was seriously injured in a crash during a pursuit of a car which was reported to have been driving dangerously on the A82 south of Inverness. In July last year, a 27-year-old man died after a white Vauxhall Corsa crashed off the M9 motorway and down an embankment during a police pursuit in the Stirling area. In April last year two officers were left in hospital when their police car crashed in Perth while pursuing a black Volkswagen Golf. ‌ And tragedy struck in May 2016 when Edinburgh nurse Jill Pirrie, 33, was knocked down and killed by a speeding teenage driver who was being chased by police. The mum-of-one was walking home from work at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary when she was hit from behind by a Ford Ka being driven by Dylan Jenkin, who had bought the car for £40 off the internet and didn't have a licence or insurance. ‌ A marked police car gave chase after officers signalled for 18-year-old Jenkins to stop, but he sped off. He was sentenced to six years in jail for causing the nurse's death by dangerous driving. A contract award notice published in recent days shows the force has struck a deal with GMK for delivery of the 'supply and installation of GPS tracking devices for police pursuits'. Police Scotland said it could not comment on the specific type of devices to be used for operational reasons. A spokeswoman said: 'Work is ongoing to deliver a pilot of the devices in selected areas of Scotland.'
