Gov. DeWine signs bill designating historic state airplane
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has signed a bill designating the 1905 Wright Flyer III as the state airplane into law.

Senate Bill 24, sponsored by State Senator Terry Johnson (R-McDermott and Steve Huffman (R-Tipp City), proposed that the plane first flown on June 23, 1905, near Dayton, Ohio, be declared as the Ohio state airplane.
DeWine signed the bill into law Tuesday.

Built by Wilbur and Orville Wright, the 1905 Wright Flyer III was the first practical airplane, capable of sustained and controlled flight.
The longest flight in the Wright Flyer III took place on October 5, 1905 and lasted 39 minutes and 24 seconds. It is the only airplane in the country to be designated as a National Historic Landmark, according to Huffman in an Ohio Senate news release.
The bill celebrates the Wright Brother's nationally renowned innovation at the state level.

Bethany residents displaced after 2-alarm fire at apartment building
PORTLAND, Ore. () — At least 10 Bethany residents have been displaced after a two-alarm fire in their apartment building, according to Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue. Authorities said several people called 911 around 3:28 a.m. on Saturday due to alarms prompted by flames spreading at a multi-family housing complex on the 18400 block of Northwest Chemeketa Lane. Emergency responders upgraded the incident to a two-alarm fire to bring additional assistance to the scene. Special needs community has a blast at Point Mallard water park
Jun. 7—Michael Musacchia was pumped Friday after going down one of the giant slides at Point Mallard water park in Decatur. He made the journey with one of his caretakers from the R&R Group Home. He was among well over 200 people who turned out for the second annual Special Needs Summer Celebration hosted by Decatur Fire & Rescue, said Lt. Brandon Sivley. Last year's event drew about 60, he said. The event, which consisted of lunch and then water park fun, was from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. under clear skies and a scorching hot sun, though a rainstorm came through later in the afternoon. Michael Wrangler, also a member of the group home, had his eye on the diving boards after having a good lunch. "We're just here to have fun," he said. "We ate lunch with a mermaid, but I didn't get my picture with her." Alexis Mason, a caretaker with R&R Group Home, said they were at Point Mallard Friday because it was a special day for special needs caretakers and clients. "It was free admission to the park and free lunch," she said. "They offered hamburgers, hotdogs, chips, sodas and water." Mason enjoys being caretaker. "I love that they love me and they know the love I show for them is real," she said. "Some of them don't have their parents or anybody, so the caretakers are the people they look forward to seeing every day." It takes a special person to be a caretaker, she said. "It takes a lot of patience," said Mason, who has been a caretaker since 2022. "But with the right type of heart, you'll get it done. These are like your second kids. I treat them like my babies." Decatur Fire & Rescue began the annual summer celebration after hearing that some of the special needs clients in the community didn't have enough activities to attend throughout the year, Sivley said. Firefighters made calls for sponsors and now the effort has grown into celebrations on Halloween, Christmas and summer, he said. He thanked Point Mallard for allowing them to host the celebration. Texas Roadhouse volunteered to cook 300 donated hamburgers and 120 donated hotdogs for the event. Walmart donated about $1,000 to cover the meals. Other sponsors included Pepsi of Decatur, Hubbard & Drake and Gillespie Cabinets. Sivley enjoys the annual event. Longtime priest at area Catholic college dies at 98
An area Catholic university is mourning the death of a beloved priest. [DOWNLOAD: Free WHIO-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] Xavier University announced the passing of Fr. Al Bischoff, S.J., on Friday. He was 98. Known as 'Father B,' the university said he 'made a profound impact' on the community. The university also called Father B a campus legend. Father B held several roles during his years at Xavier. He served as Emeritus Campus Minister for the Dorothy Day Center for Faith and Justice, as a longtime resident minister in Husman Hall, as Bellarmine Chapel Minister, where he presided over the 4:00 p.m. daily Mass, and as a longtime member of the Jesuit community. The university said in a statement online that he earned both his bachelor's degree and master's degree at Xavier. He was ordained in 1956 and began working full-time at Xavier in 1998. 'He was so popular with students that in 2003, a group of 130 alumni from 1969-1974 created a scholarship fund in his honor and surprised him with it on his 75th birthday,' the university said.
