Why think when you can act? Kristi Noem's leadership manual
Kristi Noem's political career has never exactly followed a straight line. She started out as a rancher in South Dakota, made her way into Congress, then became the Governor of South Dakota, and now she's sitting in one of the most powerful security roles in the country—Secretary of Homeland Security.
Sounds impressive, right? But lately, her choices have raised more eyebrows than cheers.
Let's just say, if there were a leadership manual with Kristi Noem's name on it, it might be titled something like: 'Why Think When You Can Act?' Because that's been the theme of her biggest controversies so far—especially the two most recent ones, involving a family dog and a suspiciously sketchy assassination plot against Donald Trump.
A dog named Cricket (RIP)
Let's start with the dog. Noem dropped a political bombshell earlier this year when she released her memoir No Going Back. In it, she talks about her 14-month-old German wirehaired pointer named Cricket. According to her, Cricket was a nightmare: unruly, aggressive, and a threat to livestock. So Noem did what no pet owner expects to read in a political memoir—she drove Cricket out to a gravel pit and shot her.
Yes, you read that right.

She shot her dog and then wrote about it like it was just another life lesson on tough decision-making. Her reasoning? The dog was 'untrainable' and had 'a mean streak.' Noem framed it as a metaphor for leadership—that sometimes, you just have to do the hard thing.
But to millions of pet owners, animal lovers, and even her own supporters, this wasn't some John Wayne moment. It was shocking, brutal, and not exactly the kind of anecdote that makes someone sound stable enough to lead a federal security agency.
Social media exploded. Pundits questioned her judgment. Late-night hosts had a field day.
And it didn't stop there. Critics pointed out that the dog story wasn't just bad PR—it revealed something deeper about Noem's instinctive, act-first-think-later style.
Then came the 'assassination plot'
If the dog story wasn't weird enough, buckle up.
In May 2025, Noem made headlines again. This time, she claimed that a 54-year-old undocumented immigrant named Ramon Morales Reyes had threatened to assassinate Donald Trump.
According to Noem, Reyes sent a handwritten letter outlining his intent to kill the former president. The claim was huge, and of course, it caught fire everywhere.
But, like Cricket's obedience training, things didn't go according to plan.
After some digging, investigators revealed that Reyes may not have written the letter at all. In fact, handwriting analysis suggested he had nothing to do with it. Even worse? There's speculation he was framed to keep him from testifying in an unrelated assault case where he was a victim.
The whole thing unraveled like a bad TV crime plot.
Suddenly, this wasn't a case of national security—it was a story of someone possibly being falsely accused for political theater. And once again, Noem was at the center of it, making bold claims without waiting for facts.
A pattern emerges
When you look at these two incidents side by side, a pattern becomes hard to ignore. Whether it's putting down a family pet or accusing someone of trying to kill a former president, Noem seems to default to the same playbook: take swift, dramatic action first, worry about accuracy later.
Sure, some folks admire decisiveness. In politics, it can be refreshing to see someone act quickly, especially when we're so used to endless debates and red tape. But in Noem's case, her brand of 'leadership' feels more like cowboy justice than thoughtful governance.
And let's be real, when you're the Secretary of Homeland Security, overseeing complex threats, managing border security, and coordinating disaster response, you need to be precise.
You need to weigh risks, consider the consequences, and maybe, just maybe, get the facts straight before going on TV.
So why does all this matter?
Well, it matters because Noem isn't just a political figure with a few controversial stories in her past. She's now in charge of a massive federal agency with over 240,000 employees. The Department of Homeland Security isn't some casual gig—it's the organization responsible for everything from cybersecurity to counterterrorism.
And in a world where national security threats are often complex, multilayered, and involve a lot of gray areas, you need someone with a cool head. Someone who doesn't treat every situation like a showdown at high noon.
Instead, we've got someone who's already demonstrated a knack for overreaction. Whether she's executing a family pet or making a public example out of someone who might be innocent, Noem doesn't seem all that interested in nuance.
And when it comes to Homeland Security, nuance isn't optional—it's everything.
At the end of the day, Kristi Noem's story is less about one dog or one letter and more about what kind of leadership we need in high-stakes roles.
Do we want someone who sees every problem as a nail because they're always holding a hammer? Or do we want someone who takes the time to investigate, reflect, and make the right call—even if it's not the flashy one?

No water diversion to Bengaluru South district, says MLA Ranganath after protest over link canal
A link canal project that aims to supply water from the Hemavathi dam to Kunigal in Karnataka's Tumakuru district, around 70 km from Bengaluru, is at the centre of a controversy following a massive protest attended by leaders of the Opposition BJP and JD(S) on Saturday. Both parties have alleged that the project would divert water from the Tumakuru to Bengaluru South district –formerly Ramanagara district — Congress leaders have maintained that the canal would benefit only Kunigal taluk. On Sunday, Kunigal MLA Dr HD Ranganath of the Congress released a statement accusing the Opposition ranks of misleading people by claiming that the water will be diverted to Magadi and Ramanagar, which are part of Bengaluru South district, using the canal. 'The link canal project is restricted to Kunigal alone,' he said, adding that the canal was designed to supply 388 cusecs of water for the benefit of farmers in Kunigal. Tumakuru district gets 49 per cent water share of Hemavathi. But Kunigal taluk, where the fight for Hemavathi water started, is yet to get the 3.01 TMC water,' he said, adding that the link canal, where work started in 2018, would benefit the people of Kunigal taluk. The MLA, who is a relative of Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, accused some 'vested interests' of misleading the people and urged Tumakuru residents not to oppose the link canal project. The protest held at the project site at Nitturu in Gubbi taluk, Tumakuru district, was attended by BJP MLAs Suresh Gowda and Jyothi Ganesh, and JD(S) MLA MT Krishnappa, along with representatives of farmer organisations and seers. The Bengaluru-Honnavar highway was blocked by protesters who demanded the government immediately scrap the project. The demonstration had taken place despite the district administration clamping prohibitory orders at the project site. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah later held a meeting with Home Minister G Parameshwara – who is district in-charge minister for Tumakuru, over the incident and asked him to resolve the issue. Parameshwara told reporters on Saturday that the works were started based on a report submitted by a technical committee formed to look into the project. 'The works were started at a cost of Rs 1,500 crore. When it began, the BJP started opposing it, after which the DyCM held multiple meetings with MPs and MLAs of the region. They had demanded that a technical committee be formed. The project began once the technical committee cleared it,' he said, adding that the protests by BJP were politically motivated. Shivakumar, who also holds the water resources portfolio, doubled down saying that the government would go ahead with the project. 'Express canal link works are 40 per cent complete. The question of stopping the project does not arise,' he said. The Hemavathi reservoir in Hassan district provides irrigation to Hassan and Tumakuru districts.

Hungarians silently protest bill 'muzzling' NGOs, media
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban (AP) BUDAPEST: Thousands marched in silence, many with their mouths taped shut, in central Budapest Sunday to protest a planned law that would allow the government to sanction "foreign-funded" NGOs and media. Critics consider the bill "on transparency in public life" as the latest attempt by nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban to muzzle dissenting voices since returning to power in 2010. The legislation would empower the government to blacklist organisations that "threaten the sovereignty of Hungary by using foreign funding to influence public life". The government argues these measures are necessary to defend against "foreign interference". "I believe it is important to have an independent press, and not to judge a publication based on where it gets its money from," one of the protesters, 49-year-old Zsolt Solyom, a retired soldier, told AFP. "What I see is that the government wants to silence any media outlet that does not speak or write according to its liking," he added. An AFP photographer estimated that a few thousand people marched through Liberty Bridge in central Budapest in complete silence. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trading CFD dengan Teknologi dan Kecepatan Lebih Baik IC Markets Mendaftar Undo "Donation today, evidence of crime tomorrow?" read one of the banners. According to the draft law blacklisted organisation, would need permission to receive foreign funding. They would also be barred from receiving donations through Hungary's annual one-percent income tax contribution scheme, an important source of revenue for non-profits. The proposed legislation has been condemned by the opposition, which has accused the government of copying Russia's authoritarian evolution. Last week, lead representatives of over 80 media outlets from 22 countries -- including Britain's The Guardian and France's Liberation -- urged their governments and the European Union to do everything in their power to prevent its enactment. The European Commission has called on Hungary to withdraw the draft, vowing to take the "necessary action" if it is adopted. Lawmakers are scheduled to vote on the legislation in mid-June. It is expected to pass, as Orban's tightly disciplined governing coalition has a supermajority in parliament.

‘Work of fiction…': Will Donald Trump bury US government in debt with multitrillion-dollar tax breaks? Even Elon Musk is concerned
The House-approved tax and spending reductions may increase the national debt by over $5 trillion during the next ten years if maintained. (AI image) US President Donald Trump is not finding it easy to convince multiple stakeholders, including the Republican senators and international investors that his 'One Big Beautiful Bill' won't bury the US government in a huge pile of debt. So much so that one of his biggest supporters, Tesla CEO Elon Musk , has also expressed concerns about the impact of the multitrillion-dollar tax breaks package. Financial markets have responded with doubt, even as the Donald Trump administration continues to struggle to demonstrate effective deficit reduction strategies. "All of this rhetoric about cutting trillions of dollars of spending has come to nothing — and the tax bill codifies that," said Michael Strain, director of economic policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute, a right-leaning think tank, according to an Associated Press report. "There is a level of concern about the competence of Congress and this administration and that makes adding a whole bunch of money to the deficit riskier. " The Trump administration has responded aggressively towards critics expressing worry about increasing debt under the new US President's leadership, despite evidence of rising debt levels following his 2017 tax reductions during his first presidential term. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Truque caseiro noturno eficaz contra a papada (faça hoje mesmo) Revista & Saúde Saiba Mais Undo What White House and Donald Trump have said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt in her briefing earlier this week attempted to address what she termed as inaccurate assertions regarding the tax reductions. Leavitt criticised the assessment that the 'One, Big, Beautiful Bill' would increase the deficit, dismissing the Congressional Budget Office's analysis and other evaluators' projections, stating they employ unreliable assumptions and have consistently failed at forecasting across both Democratic and Republican administrations. However, Trump's own statements have indicated that the insufficient spending reductions to balance his tax cuts were a result of maintaining unity within the Republican congressional group. "We have to get a lot of votes," Trump stated last week. "We can't be cutting." The Trump administration seems to fervently be relying on economic growth as the primary solution, a strategy that receives limited support outside Trump's immediate circle. The White House Council of Economic Advisers believes that their policies will generate substantial growth, leading to reduced annual budget deficits in proportion to the overall economy, thereby establishing fiscal sustainability for the US government. The council projects economic growth averaging 3.2% annually over the next four years, contrasting with the Congressional Budget Office's 1.9% forecast, and estimates creating or preserving up to 7.4 million jobs. Most economic experts regard the non-partisan CBO as the authoritative source for policy assessment, though it doesn't evaluate costs for executive branch actions, such as Trump's independent tariff decisions. Elon Musk's apprehensions & disappointment Expressing his concerns, technology magnate Elon Musk, who previously served in Trump's close circle as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency, shared his views with CBS News: "I was disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly, which increases the budget deficit, not just decreases it, and undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing." Soon after his take on the 'One Big Beautiful Bill', Musk also announced his exit from Trump's Department of Government Efficiency. In an official statement, Musk conveyed his appreciation to Trump for the chance to head DOGE, stating, "As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President Donald Trump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending. The DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government. " Also Read | 'Even if we lose…': Donald Trump administration readying two-part strategy to impose reciprocal tariffs, says 'we will do it another way Rising US national debt The House-approved tax and spending reductions would increase the national debt by over $5 trillion during the next ten years if maintained, according to analysis from the Committee for a Responsible Financial Budget, an organisation monitoring fiscal responsibility. The legislation employs a strategy of setting expiration dates for various components to artificially reduce its apparent cost. This approach mirrors the strategy used in the 2017 tax reductions, which has created the current situation where numerous tax cuts will expire in 2024 without Congressional renewal. The debt situation has significantly worsened compared to eight years prior. With total debt exceeding £36.1 trillion, investors now require higher returns on government borrowing. The 10-year Treasury Note currently yields approximately 4.5%, a substantial increase from the 2.5% rate that prevailed when the 2017 tax legislation was enacted. 'Work of fiction' External economic analysts anticipate that increased debt levels would maintain elevated interest rates and dampen overall economic expansion, as borrowing costs would rise for housing, vehicles, commercial ventures and educational financing. "This just adds to the problem future policymakers are going to face," said Brendan Duke, a former Biden administration aide now at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a liberal think tank according to the AP report. Duke said that with the tax cuts in the bill set to expire in 2028, lawmakers would be "dealing with Social Security, Medicare and expiring tax cuts at the same time." The Penn Wharton Budget Model's faculty director, Kent Smetters, dismissed the growth forecasts from Trump's economic advisers as unrealistic and a 'work of fiction'. He indicated that the legislation could encourage some employees to reduce their working hours to become eligible for Medicaid. "I don't know of any serious forecaster that has meaningfully raised their growth forecast because of this legislation," said Harvard University professor Jason Furman, who was the Council of Economic Advisers chair under the Obama administration. "These are mostly not growth- and competitiveness-oriented tax cuts. And, in fact, the higher long-term interest rates will go the other way and hurt growth.'
