We've all heard about Ozempic , the diabetes drug that's become popular for its strong weight loss effects. But what if a simple, natural ingredient like fibre could do something similar? That's what a new study from the University of Arizona and the University of Vienna suggests. Researchers have found that beta-glucan , a special type of fibre found in oats and barley, may help with weight loss and blood sugar control , just like Ozempic, but without any medication. For a long time, fibre wasn't the star of the nutrition world. People mostly focused on carbs and protein. But now, fibre is making a comeback, especially as we learn more about how it helps our gut and overall health. Our gut is home to trillions of tiny bacteria, known as the gut microbiome . These bacteria love fibre. In return, they help us digest food, fight off illness, and even manage weight. In the new 2024 study, scientists gave different types of fibre to mice who were on a high-fat diet . Only one type worked for weight loss: beta-glucan.Beta-glucan is a soluble fibre. That means it dissolves in water and can be easily used by gut bacteria. You can find it in common whole grains like oats and barley. In the study, mice that ate beta-glucan didn't eat less food, but they still lost weight and fat. Their metabolism changed. One of the biggest changes was an increase in a helpful gut bacterium called Ileibacterium, which other studies have also linked to weight loss.Another key change was the production of a chemical called butyrate. This is made when gut bacteria digest fibre. Butyrate helps your body release GLP-1, a hormone that reduces hunger. Ozempic works by mimicking this same hormone. So in simple terms, beta-glucan might help your body make more of this hormone naturally.Butyrate doesn't just help with weight. It also protects the lining of your gut, supports the liver, and may lower inflammation. Scientists say we still have a lot to learn, but the early signs are exciting. That said, remember: this research was done in mice. We still need more studies in humans to be sure it works the same way.Adding beta-glucan to your diet is easy. Here are some foods that naturally contain it:These foods slow down digestion, which keeps you full for longer and helps your body manage blood sugar better.Inputs from TOI

New Covid vaccine developed by USA researchers is ready to fight Coronavirus. How effective it is?

Live Events (You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel Amid fresh surge in Covid-19 cases, a team of US researchers has developed a new type of mRNA vaccine that is more scalable and adaptable to tackle continuously evolving viruses such as SARS-CoV-2 and H5N1. While the currently available mRNA vaccines are highly effective at inducing an immune response against Covid , they present challenges like the high amount of mRNA needed to produce them and the constantly evolving nature of the pathogen."The virus changes, moving the goal post, and updating the vaccine takes some time," said senior author Suresh Kuchipudi, chair of Infectious Diseases and Microbiology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Public address these challenges, the researchers created a proof-of-concept Covid vaccine using what's known as a "trans-amplifying" mRNA this approach, the mRNA is separated into two fragments -- the antigen sequence and the replicase sequence -- the latter of which can be produced in advance, saving crucial time in the event a new vaccine must be developed urgently and produced at addition, the researchers analysed the spike-protein sequences of all known variants of the SARS-CoV-2 for commonalities, rendering what's known as a "consensus spike protein" as the basis for the vaccine's mice, the vaccine induced a robust immune response against many strains of SARS-CoV-2."This has the potential for more lasting immunity that would not require updating, because the vaccine has the potential to provide broad protection," said Kuchipudi."Additionally, this format requires an mRNA dose 40 times less than conventional vaccines, so this new approach significantly reduces the overall cost of the vaccine."The study, published in the journal npj Vaccines could inform more efficient vaccine development for other constantly evolving RNA viruses with pandemic potential, Kuchipudi said.

'Constant lapses and verbal aphasias': Republican advisor drops a bomb on Donald Trump's mental health

Live Events (You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel US president Donald Trump may not complete his term due to possible mental decline, a Republican political strategist has Wilson, co-founder of the Lincoln Project political action committee, told Times Radio that Trump's recent behavior as more troubling than simple "senior moments," despite the president having recently passed a psychological and physical said, 'He is incoherent. His inability to articulate any thought or position without constant asides, constant lapses, the verbal aphasias he is experiencing at various points.'Notably earlier a former presidential advisor claimed that Trump might be suffering from who has closely observed Trump since 2015, added, 'The man you're watching today is not the Trump of 2015, nor is he the Trump of 2020, he's not even the Trump of 2024.'He noted that some decline in communication ability is not unusual with age, saying, 'There is a decline in Trump's ability to communicate, there is a decline in Trump's ability to articulate his thoughts. This is not uncommon when people get older.'Wilson also revealed that concerns about Trump's mental acuity are shared by other experts, who—though lacking concrete evidence—suspect early signs of dementia.'There are an awful lot of professionals in the world who are looking at the same set of behaviors and saying, 'This is what we see in early dementia cases... this is what we see when there is cognitive decline.''He continued, 'Just passing the cognitive test does not mean Donald Trump is not suffering from the ravages of age and ill health.'Speculation about Trump's health has been ongoing, especially after reports of sudden weight loss earlier this year. Notably, Trump is the same age Joe Biden was when Biden took office in to the discussion, a recent book by Jake Tapper highlighted claims about Biden's health reportedly deteriorating since taking office, adding complexity to the public debate over presidential the speculation, Trump's official physician, Captain Sean Conley, issued a statement in April affirming the president's health: 'President Trump remains in excellent health, exhibiting robust cardiac, pulmonary, neurological, and general physical function. President Trump exhibits excellent cognitive and physical health and is fully fit to execute the duties of the Commander-in-Chief and Head of State.'

Asteroid bigger than the Empire State Building to fly by Earth this week: What if it strikes?

ESA Labels It 'Infrequent' Due to Size and Distance Origins and Discovery of Asteroid 2008 DG5 Live Events Potential Consequences of a Hypothetical Impact Recent Close Call: The Case of Asteroid 2024 YR4 FAQs What is asteroid 2008 DG5? When will asteroid 2008 DG5 pass by Earth? (You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel In a rare astronomical occurrence, an asteroid larger than the Golden Gate Bridge or the Empire State building is expected to make a safe pass by Earth on Thursday, June 5, 2025. The asteroid, formally designated 424482 (2008 DG5), is estimated to measure between 310 to 690 metres (1,017 to 2,264 feet), placing it among the largest 3% of known asteroids, according to data from its massive size, the asteroid poses no threat to Earth. The object will pass at a distance of 2.17 million miles (3.49 million kilometres)—approximately nine times farther than the Moon, which orbits Earth at an average distance of 238,855 miles (384,400 km), as mentioned in a report by the flyby may seem distant in terrestrial terms, the European Space Agency (ESA) has termed the event 'infrequent' owing to the asteroid's scale and relatively close approach. According to international standards, any object over 492 feet (150 metres) in diameter passing within 4.6 million miles (7.4 million kilometres) is categorized as a 'potentially hazardous object.' Thus, 2008 DG5 falls within that classification, despite no danger of 2008 DG5 belongs to the Apollo group of asteroids, known for orbits that intersect Earth's path around the Sun. The object completes a full solar orbit roughly every 514 Earth days. It was first spotted in 2008 by astronomers from the Catalina Sky Survey, an Arizona-based observatory operating under NASA's Near-Earth Object Observation next anticipated close approach of this asteroid will not occur until 2032, marking this year's flyby as a rare chance for researchers and skywatchers to monitor such a sizable near-Earth object, as per the Forbes 2008 DG5 will pass harmlessly, astronomers often talk about the potential consequences of similar objects entering Earth's atm osphere. An asteroid of this size could cause widespread regional devastation, generating shockwaves, fires, or tsunamis depending on the impact draw a comparison, NASA cites the Tunguska event of 1908, caused by an asteroid only 130 feet (40 metres) wide, which devastated over 2,000 square kilometres of Siberian forest. At the extreme end, the Chicxulub impact, believed to have wiped out the dinosaurs, involved an asteroid estimated at 10 to 15 kilometres in this year, a separate asteroid known as 2024 YR4 made headlines after early predictions suggested a possible impact on December 22, 2032. The object, which is approximately 130 to 300 feet in diameter—about as tall as the Statue of Liberty—initially presented a 3.1% chance of collision, the highest ever recorded for an asteroid of that Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) in Chile first detected 2024 YR4 on December 27, 2024, triggering widespread concern. However, after further analysis, NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies announced on February 24 that the probability of impact had dropped to near zero. Asteroid 2008 DG5 is a massive near-Earth object belonging to the Apollo group of asteroids, which are known for their Earth-crossing orbits. It measures between 310 to 690 meters (1,017 to 2,264 feet), placing it among the top 3% of the largest known asteroid is expected to make its closest approach to Earth on Thursday, June 5, 2025.
