Kewanee teacher surprised with Golden Apple Award
Kewanee High School educator Kindra Callahan positively impacts students and staff on a daily basis.
'I have been impressed since the day I met (Callahan) a year ago. She is so compassionate and cares so deeply about every student here, and she has led our FFA program to phenomenal accomplishments this year,' said Amanda Tidwell, Kewanee High School's principal.
A leader in the classroom, Callahan puts her students first.
'I prioritize my kiddos every day, and I tell them I will match them step for step, but I can't take the first step,' Callahan said.
'Seeing what she has done with (her agricultural classes) here in Kewanee is amazing,' said Alan Mather, president of the Golden Apple Foundation. 'I mean, she took a program that was dying, elevated it to one of the top in the state, and what was a department of one is now a department of three.'
For that dedication, Callahan was surprised in front of the entire school Thursday by being named a Golden Apple Award winner.
'It is an honor to be here to recognize her,' Mather said.
'It's the satisfaction of showing somebody else that they can win, and I get that feeling when I help my students do stuff,' Callahan said. 'I feel good witnessing it through their eyes.'
The Golden Apple Award is given for excellence in teaching and leadership.
'When I got here, we needed to draw a line in the sand. There was a lot of potential, but students needed to see where that bar could be, and I was going to grind,' Callahan said. 'I'm a confidence builder, I'm a coach.'
Each Golden Apple recipient receives a $5,000 cash award and a spring sabbatical provided by Northwestern University at no cost.

For the past six years now, the Bill and Carol Van Dusen Fund through the Rochester Area Community Foundation has awarded these to the winning teachers as a way to give back and thank educators in the Rochester area. Each year, Roberts Wesleyan University gives out three $10,000 scholarships to students pursuing their career as a teacher in varying degrees: Traditional Undergrad Population: Ava Thompson is a freshman student from Brocton, New York — pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Adolescent Education: English 5-12. She is a member of Roberts Wesleyan University's Global Honors Program. Pathway to Teaching: Melissa Brown transferred in courses from California State University and will focus on Childhood Education – Students with Disabilities in Grades 1 to 6. She is currently a stay-at-home mom but would love to work at Honeoye Falls where her kids go to school. Master of Education Program for Initial Certification: L Wiltse currently works as a substitute teacher for Carthage Central School District but holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from SUNY Potsdam. They are looking to get their initial certification to educating childhood and students with disabilities. Sister Karlien Back just wrapped up her 45th year of teaching at Our Lady of Mercy! Fun fact: She taught News 8 WROC's Wendy Bello, Programming Coordinator Colleen Law, and News 8 First at 4 Anchor Natalie Kucko. Lindale FFA member among 10 selected for scholars program
LINDALE, Texas (KETK) — Creed Rand of the Lindale FFA Chapter was selected as one of 10 Texas FFA members for the 2025-2026 Ford Leadership Scholars Program. Tyler Animal Control and Shelter offers free adoptions in June The FFA is a student organization that is based around educating the youth on agricultural practices, according to the FFA website. Rand will attend a week long leadership training where he will plan and execute a sustainable community service project in Lindale. The Lindale FFA chapter said the Ford Leadership Scholars program started with a partnership between the Texas FFA Foundation and Texas Ford Dealerships. The partnership recognizes leaders in different chapters and encourages them to participate in leadership programs. Golden Apple Award: Congratulations to Marti Henderson!
HENRIETTA, N.Y. (WROC) — Congratulations to our latest Golden Apple Award winner, Marti Henderson. Henderson teaches Physical Education at Sherman Elementary in Henrietta. Throughout her 36 years of teaching, she has inspired countless others with her dedication and guidance. 'I've known Marti for over 33 years. We've been together through friendships, different disciplines, different districts and throughout all that time, Marti is the consummate professional. She is so good to her students of course, but she is also really good to us,' Henderson's colleague Anne Marie Leo-Catapano said. 'Not just the young teachers, she inspires and takes good care of them, but she's also very helpful to seasoned teachers. She is everything you want in a colleague, she really is.' Principal Dave Passero said, 'She wears her heart on her sleeve. Every single child matters, and she makes sure that she finds a way to engage each and every student.' For the past six years, Henderson has been teaching Physical Education. The kids call her coach. But, prior to that, she was a science teacher. No matter the subject, she has always been someone students can turn to. Colleague Julia Brongo said, 'She's the go-to person where if they are struggling with insecurities or what have you, they know they can go to coach. She just gives sound advice. She teaches to the whole child, not just Phys Ed, but how to be good humans.' Colleague Keyshawn Brown adds, 'She's taught me a lot of things about being a good teacher and classroom management techniques, how to talk in front of people, project my voice. There's been countless things she's done to help me over the past 2 years.' Mrs. Henderson has decided that this will be her last year teaching. She is retiring after 36 and a half years. Teaching wasn't her first career choice, but it was the right choice. 'After college I became a scientist, and I just didn't love it. But I did love the sciences, so then I decided after that career that I was going to pursue my teaching degree. So I went back to school got it and have loved every minute of it since,' Henderson told News 8. She will be missed, but leaves knowing she has made a difference. She recalls a visit from a former student a few years ago. 'She came over with flowers and balloons and said I just wanted to let you know that I was inspired by your teaching of science and I became a scientist, and I just had to come and tell you…You just don't know what you are going to say or do that could change it for somebody,' Henderson said.
