Delhi weather today: IMD forecasts heavy rain; orange alert for 8 states
People in Delhi woke to a pleasant summer morning on Sunday with relatively cooler weather. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday issued a yellow alert for Delhi, warning of thunderstorms with lightning and moderate to heavy rainfall.
Generally cloudy skies with moderate to heavy rain or thunderstorms are likely, accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 30–40 kmph, occasionally reaching up to 50 kmph during storms.
The showers are expected to bring the maximum temperature down to 35–37 degrees Celsius, with the minimum likely to hover around 27–29 degrees Celsius.
Delhi weather: Weekly forecast
Delhi is expected to witness largely cloudy weather over the next seven days, with the IMD issuing a yellow alert for thunderstorms, lightning, and moderate to light rainfall through June 27. Gusty winds between 30–40 kmph, occasionally reaching 50 kmph during evening or night thunderstorms, have been forecast. While the intensity of rainfall may vary, no heatwave conditions are expected during the week. Cloudy skies are likely to persist from June 24 to June 27.
Rain improves air quality in Delhi
Delhi's air quality continues to show improvement on Sunday, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) slipping into the 'satisfactory' category after remaining 'poor' for several days.
The air quality was recorded 'satisfactory' at 9 am on June 22, with an AQI reading of 83, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data showed.
According to the CPCB, an AQI between 0 and 50 is considered 'good', 51–100 'satisfactory', 101–200 'moderate', 201–300 'poor', 301–400 'very poor' and 401–500 'severe'.
IMD issues orange alert for several states
The IMD has issued an orange alert for eight states, warning of intense rainfall activity. The alert covers Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, and Uttar Pradesh.
Earlier, on June 21, the IMD had warned of 'heavy to very heavy rainfall' over Northwest India, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and the Konkan-Goa region, with the wet spell expected to continue from June 21 to June 26.
"Conditions are favourable for further advance of monsoon into the remaining parts of North Arabian Sea, more areas of Rajasthan, West Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and some parts of Jammu & Kashmir–Gilgit-Baltistan–Muzaffarabad and Ladakh during the next two days," the IMD said.

Monsoon at Delhi's doorstep, onset likely in two days says IMD
The southwest monsoon is set to advance into Delhi and neighbourhood areas during the next two days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Sunday. If realised, the monsoon will arrive earlier than the normal date of June 29. Last year, the onset over the national capital was marked on June 28. This year, Delhi will not experience heatwave condition in June and overall, the month has recorded only seven days when the maximum temperatures crossed 40 degree Celsius mark. The hottest day (43.9 degree Celsisu) of this month was recorded on June 12. The IMD said, ' Conditions are favourbale for the further advance of the southwest monsoon into more parts of Rajasthan, Punjab, some parts of Haryana, Chandugarh, Delhi and cover the rest of Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Jannu in the next two days.' Maintaining its steady and early advances since the onset this year over Kerala on May 24, the southwest monsoon Sunday progressed into most parts of Himachal Pradesh, covered all of Ladakh and Kashmir, most parts of Jammu and entered Punjab. With the latest advancement, the northern limit of monsoon passed through Jaipur, Agra, Rampur, Dehradun, Shimla, Pathankot and Jammu. This year, the monsoon progress has been swift since the onset, except a brief lull during May 29 – June 15. It had arrived over the Andaman Sea on May 13 — early by a week. A low pressure lies over central Uttar Pradesh and this system is expected to move northwestwards and further weaken by Monday. In this view, the IMD has warned of an enhanced rainfall over central and eastern India regions till Friday. Extremely heavy rainfall ( over 200mm in 24 hours) over eastern Madhya Pradesh and eastern Rajasthan during Monday and Tuesday. Heavy rainfall is forecast over Bihar and Jharkhand till June 25, over Odisha, West Bengal and Sikkim during June 24 – 27. Very heavy rainfall ( 115 to 204mm in 24 hours) is expected over Sikkim, West Bengal and Bihar on Monday, over Odisha on June 25 and 26 and over Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Gujarat till June 28. Over northeast India, heavy rainfall (64 -115mm in 24 hours) will continue till Tuesday with spells expected over Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, where exceptionally high spells were recorded last week. Kerala and Mahe in southern India will receive heavy rainfall all of this week and sea conditions will remain rough with strong surface winds along the coasts of Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh, the IMD said.

Thunderstorm warning in 11 Telangana districts today
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a thunderstorm warning to 11 Telangana districts for Monday (June 23). According to the IMD's latest bulletin, thunderstorm accompanied with lightning is very likely to occur at isolated places in Mancherial, Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Mahabubabad, Rangareddy, Medchal Malkajgiri, Hyderabad and Nagarkurnool districts. The forecast also warned of strong surface winds which are likely to prevail in all 33 districts of the State. Meanwhile, for Hyderabad and its surrounding areas, there will be partly cloudy sky for the next 24 hours. 'Light rain to drizzle accompanied with gusty winds are likely to prevail in the city. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 35° Celsius and 24° Celsius respectively,' the forecast said.

Monsoon hits Himachal early; IMD warns of rain in Delhi, Maharashtra, Jharkhand
The southwest monsoon has arrived in some parts of Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Punjab. Conditions are favourable for further advancement of the monsoon over the remaining parts of the North Arabian Sea, more parts of Rajasthan and Punjab, parts of Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi, as well as the remaining areas of West Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu during the next two days, news agency ANI reported. The monsoon arrived early—five days ahead of its normal onset date of June 25 in Himachal Pradesh—and is expected to cover the entire hill state by Wednesday (June 25). With the early arrival, several parts of the state have already received rainfall, and the Meteorological Department has predicted heavy to very heavy rains across Himachal over the next 5 to 7 days. Speaking to news agency ANI, Shobhit Katiyar, Senior Scientist at the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Shimla, said, "On June 20, 2025, the southwest monsoon entered Himachal Pradesh. It has already covered districts like Kinnaur, Kullu, Sirmaur, Mandi, Lahaul-Spiti, and Shimla. The remaining districts will be covered by the monsoon in the next 2 to 3 days." "Usually, the monsoon arrives in Himachal by June 25, and in Shimla city by June 22. This year's arrival is a few days earlier, which is still considered within the normal range," he added. Meanwhile, the national capital is likely to witness light rain accompanied by strong surface winds, with the maximum temperature expected to hover around 37 degrees Celsius, according to the IMD. The weather agency has also issued a fresh warning for very heavy rainfall over isolated areas of northwestern Jharkhand, with heavy rain expected in parts of north-central and northeastern districts over the next few days. Mumbai and many parts of Maharashtra are likely to see more intense monsoon rains from June 22, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said. Yellow and orange alerts have been issued for several districts. Mumbai is already dealing with waterlogging and traffic jams, and the coming showers may make things worse. According to the IMD, areas including Konkan, Goa, and the hilly regions of central Maharashtra are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall between June 22 and 25.
