NSW MP Gareth Ward likened to ‘vampire running a blood bank' by alleged sexual assault victim, court hears
A court has heard a New South Wales state MP's alleged sexual abuse victim was spurred to action after learning the politician had been appointed as families minister, which he likened to a vampire running a blood bank.
The Kiama MP, Gareth Ward, 44, is on trial in the NSW district court after pleading not guilty to sexual intercourse without consent and indecent assault charges.
He is accused of inviting a drunk 18-year-old man – who was 17 when they met – to his south coast home in February 2013.
The man told the jury Ward plied him with drinks before indecently assaulting him three times in one night.
He said he had been prompted to report the assaults to police in 2020 after he realised Ward had been appointed the NSW minister for families.
'I felt basically that a vampire was running the blood bank and that I had a responsibility that I needed to get it on the record,' the complainant said.
He told the jury he was 'very distressed' by Ward's ministerial role and found it 'very inappropriate'.
But the complainant said he was also scared of Ward's power and feared there could be 'significant consequences' if he spoke out.

The jury heard his decision came years after he confided in a friend about the alleged assaults, only to be told he should have expected it when he went to Ward's house.
'[The friend] said something to the effect of 'that was obviously going to happen' and … I must be gay for wanting to go there,' the complainant recalled.
He told the jury he thought the incident was probably his fault so he decided he needed to put it aside, pretend it never happened, and 'just go on with being Gareth's bro'.
The alleged assault was sparked when the 18-year-old – who had been drinking and was in a 'jocular mood' – decided to play a prank on Ward by pretending to be passed out.
He alleges Ward tried to wake him up before sliding his hands into the teen's shorts, and touching his buttocks and scrotum.

'The heavy breath and the [feeling of] skin on skin are the two things that have stuck with me about that moment,' the complainant said during his emotional testimony.
'I felt like I shrivelled up inside myself. It was the most awkward feeling ever.'
Later, he said he had been lying facedown on the bed when Ward allegedly 'mounted' him without his permission and massaged his lower back.
Despite asking Ward to get off and stop, the complainant alleged the MP continued while explaining he had masseur training.
Upon reflection, he said he believed Ward's unwelcome touching contributed to his subsequent drug and alcohol abuse issues.
Ward is also accused of sexually assaulting a drunk political staffer after a NSW Parliament House event in 2015.
The man, who was 24 at the time but is now in his 30s, alleged Ward climbed into bed with him, groped his backside and sexually assaulted him despite him repeatedly saying 'no'.
Ward was charged in 2022 over the claims, which he denies.

A burglar who stalked his ex-girlfriend before going on a crime spree has been jailed for three years and three Tearse, 25, pulled out a knife on the owner of a record shop and took a car from a garage during a two-day spate of burglaries in Newcastle in November, the city's Crown Court had previously tormented his ex-partner with threatening texts, phone calls and unwanted visits to her home, prosecutors of no fixed abode, admitted offences including stalking involving serious harm or distress, burglary and making threats with an offensive weapon. 'Scarred for life' After they broke up, Tearse and his associates followed the woman in their car and, on 24 November, he loudly revved his motorbike engine outside her home after making threats to attack her property, the court would "pester" her with calls and messages and set up multiple social media accounts to contact her through, Mr Hopkins a statement read to the court, the woman said she had been "scarred for life" by Tearse having been "completely brainwashed" by him, adding she had walked on "egg shells" for fear he would spit at or hit her or "smash up" their 25 November, after being released on bail by police over the stalking allegation, Tearse drove a van using cloned number plates on to the Fowberry Road industrial estate in Scotswood, Mr Hopkins that occasion he stole a £70 tool box and car keys worth £180 from a car mechanic firm, the court heard. Tearse returned to the estate with an accomplice at about 10:10 GMT the following day to steal two large signs worth £200 from a plant hire firm and take a £1,000 Vauxhall Insignia from a garage, the court an hour later, the owner of a record shop in the John Marley Centre in Newcastle found Tearse behind the counter opening a package and looking for something to steal, Mr Hopkins challenged, Tearse pulled out a 6in-long (15cm) knife and lunged at the man before fleeing, but not before slashing the tyre of the van of a postman who witnessed the burglary and filmed it on his phone, the court heard. 'Terrifying' behaviour In mitigation, Rachel Hedworth said Tearse, who had 11 convictions for 24 offences on his record, had been deemed a "naughty boy" since his primary school days when he struggled to concentrate in said he was "extremely sorry" for stalking his ex-partner but it was against a background of a picture of him "in a state of undress" being circulated on social media which was causing him "acute embarrassment and distress".He had also been devastated by the death of a close relative and the break-up of his parents' marriage, while the end of his relationship with the woman had seen him become homeless and turn to drugs, Ms Hedworth Carolyn Scott said Tearse's behaviour towards his ex-girlfriend was "completely unacceptable" and "terrifying", adding it was fair to say the woman was "traumatised" by his actions.A restraining order banning Tearse from contacting the woman or attending her address was also made to last for 10 years and he was banned from driving for one year and eight months. Gloucestershire hockey coach jailed for sexually abusing teenager
A sports coach has been jailed for four years after engaging in an "abusive sexual relationship" with a teenager. Samantha Zala, of School Road in Lydbrook, Gloucestershire, pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual activity with a child and was sentenced at Gloucester Crown Court on 57-year-old was a private hockey coach at the time she committed the offences, which occurred between 2016 and Wycherley, of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), said Zala "targeted and groomed" the vulnerable girl and left her with "lasting distress". Cops DOUBLE reward for info on murdered Brit Peter Falconio as dying ‘Outback Killer' prepares to take secrets to grave
POLICE have doubled the reward for information leading to the body of Brit backpacker Peter Falconio, who was murdered in the Australian outback nearly 24 years ago. Cops have increased their efforts to locate the tourist's remains which have never been found - with his notorious killer now wheelchair-bound and "just about dead". 6 6 6 The corpse of the 28-year-old tourist who was shot dead by motor mechanic Bradley Murdoch have never been located - and the killer is preparing to take his secrets to the grave. Northern Territory police announced today they have increased the reward for any information which could help to find Falconio's body. It comes just before the 24th anniversary of the tragic Brit's death, who died on July 14, 2001. The reward cash was initially set at $250,000 Australian dollars (£120,000 pounds) but has now skyrocketed up to $500,000 Australian dollars (£240,000 pounds). Cops said the major increase was because they are still "holding out hope" that vital information will help them uncover more answers. Acting Commander Mark Grieve said: "We recognise the passage of time that's transpired, however it's never too late to reach out and start that conversation with police. "There's still people out there who may hold some information. "This has been a protracted and long investigation in regards to trying to find Peter's remains and now is just the right time we feel to present this reward on offer." Falconio, 28, from Hepworth in Yorkshire, was travelling with his British girlfriend, Joanne Lees, from Huddersfield, when they were attacked near Barrow Creek, in Australia 's Northern Territory. Ms Lees managed to escape after hiding in the bush for nearly five hours until two passing lorry drivers rescued her. New clue in search for Peter Falconio's body Murdoch, now 67, who has always protested his innocence was later jailed for life with a non-parole period of 28 years. Despite repeated searches, Falconio's body has never been found. Prosecutors have argued that Murdoch had likely disposed of the backpacker in the vast swaths of desert between Alice Springs and Broome. Fears are now mounting that Falconio's loved ones will never know where his body was left due to Murdoch being on the verge of death. He was diagnosed with terminal throat cancer in 2019 and is now understood to have been transferred to a palliative care unit in Alice Springs recently. Police refused to confirm reports that he had been allowed to take brief excursions around Alice Springs in the company of prison staff. 6 6 Sick Murdoch was born on February 29, 1958. He was a drug smuggler who served 15 months for shooting at people celebrating at an Australian rules football match in 1995. Eight years later he was charged with seven counts of abduction and rape, but later acquitted. The same year he was charged with Falconio's murder. The former mechanic, who once drove road trains across the Australian Outback, lost multiple appeals and was denied special leave to appeal to the High Court in 2007. He was 28 years old when he was tragically shot by a man who flagged down the van he was driving. The man was 43-year-old drug smuggler Bradley John Murdoch. Lees soon became a prime suspect in her boyfriend's murder after claims she appeared "emotionless" after the incident. But it was later revealed she had taken the sedative Valium to help her handle her horror ordeal. Police were never able to locate Falconio's remains. Reports in February 2023 detailed that police had found some bones near Alice Springs that were being tested to see if they were the remains of Peter Falconio. The reports were later rubbished with authorities stating: 'No human remains have been located by Northern Territory Police, and a search is not currently being conducted." Murdoch has launched several appeals against his conviction, but he remains in prison in the Northern Territory. He will be 74 years old when he is eligible for parole in 2032. He was handed a life sentence with a 28-year non-parole period, due to expire in 2032. News surfaced on February 17, 2023, that cops had found some bones near Alice Springs that were being tested to see if they were the remains of Peter Falconio. But the reports were rubbished with authorities stating: 'No human remains have been located by Northern Territory Police, and a search is not currently being conducted. Mystery continues to surround the Falconio case because of the absence of a body and no obvious motive for the killing. 6
