Japan's navy unveils railgun designed to down China's hypersonic missiles

Japan's navy has unveiled a ship-mounted electromagnetic railgun intended to down incoming Chinese hypersonic missiles.
The large futuristic-looking weapon system was pictured last week undergoing advanced stages of testing on the flight deck of the experimental JS Asuka warship.
Tokyo has been intensely focused on fielding its next-generation weapons as threats increase in the Indo-Pacific from China, Russia and North Korea.
The railgun does not require explosives or propellant but relies on electromagnetic energy to launch projectiles at supersonic speeds, providing a cost-effective and quick response to potential fast-moving missile threats.
It fires at higher velocities than regular weaponry, with its ammunition travelling at 2,500 metres per second (m/s), compared to traditional tank guns, which fire shells at speeds of around 1,750 m/s.
Japan's Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) said that Vice Admiral Omachi Katsushi, the commander of the Self Defense Fleet, had visited the Asuka 'to observe the latest status of the railgun, which is under development at the Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency'.
Officials said the weapon would bolster naval missile defences, having the potential to engage air, sea and land targets with higher levels of accuracy than conventional munitions.
Research into the new weapon system started in 2016 and it carried out its first onboard firing test in October 2023.
The railgun 'supports the development of Japan's future combat readiness and national defence posture' JMSDF said last week.
Japan needed to strengthen its country's defence capabilities after it estimated it had only 60 per cent of the interceptor missiles needed for national defence in 2022.
The US navy suspended its own railgun programme in 2021 after a decade in development that cost more than $500million over significant power and overheating challenges.
But China has been developing its own electromagnetic gun for years under a shroud of secrecy. In 2018, photographs showed Chinese warship Haiyang Shan, a landing craft, equipped with a prototype electromagnetic railgun.
India, Russia and Turkey have also tested prototypes.
The UK, despite research, is not building its own railgun. Instead, it is in the advanced stages of developing a direct energy weapon known as DragonFire.
Tipped as a revolutionary weapon, DragonFire uses lasers to down drones and missiles with an intense light beam, not projectiles fired by electromagnetic forces, and costs £10 a shot.
Ukraine has developed its own laser weapon which is understood to have been modelled on a UK prototype after designs were shared with Kyiv in 2024.

Around 800 people attempt to climb Mount Everest each year, braving extreme conditions for the chance to say they've stood on top of the world. Along with rigorous physical and mental training, hopefuls need to prepare for the harrowing effects of altitude atop Earth's tallest mountain, where the amount of oxygen taken in with each breath is drastically lower than at sea level. Traditionally, climbers have acclimatized by spending significant time in the mountains, heading up and down to prepare their bodies for the dizzying heights, and reducing the impact of altitude sickness. This tried and tested method has proven effective for the past 70 years of Everest expeditions, but comes with one major drawback: time. Without four to six weeks to dedicate to acclimatization, many Everest hopefuls are now turning to modern technology to help them prepare, sleeping and exercising in specialist acclimatizing 'hypoxic' tents, which do away with the need to spend months in the mountains. 'You sleep like garbage if you're not acclimatized, you lose your appetite, so you wither away Brian Oestrike, CEO of Hypoxico Altitude Training Systems As alien as it may sound, hypoxic tents, otherwise known as altitude tents, have become increasingly common in recent years, used by alpinists and climbers to prepare for harsh conditions. This year, a group of British veterans in their forties and fifties used hypoxic tents in combination with controversial Xenon gas to speed-climb the mountain, summiting a record four days after arriving in Nepal and effectively going from sea level in London, to the highest peak on the planet in 5 days. The very next day, US-Ukrainian climber Andrew Ushakov claimed to have broken their record, after spending over 400 hours acclimatizing in a hypoxic tent. Ushakov says he went from New York to the Everest summit in just 3 days, 23 hours, and 27 minutes. So what are hypoxic tents, and how can they help climbers achieve these once-unthinkable feats? Read on for everything you need to know. Put simply, hypoxic tents mimic the low oxygen levels of high-altitude environments. The air at sea level contains 20.9% accessible oxygen, a number that drops dramatically the higher you get. At Everest base camp, it falls to around 10.4%. By the summit, it's down to just a third of the accessible oxygen quotient at regular sea-level. In healthy individuals, blood oxygen saturation levels sit around 98% to 100% at sea level. At altitude, that number drops to roughly 87% to 92% This has a weakening effect and can cause altitude sickness. Hypoxic tents simulate this mix with a generator or pump, which removes oxygen and replaces it with nitrogen, reducing the amount of oxygen in the air to high-altitude levels. Sleeping in the simulated altitude conditions of a hypoxic tent triggers your body to saturate your blood oxygen levels, releasing red blood cells and ready your system for conditions at 20,000ft (6,096m). 'As you expose yourself to altitude, your kidneys release EPO [erythropoietin], which starts this physiological change that leads to an increase in red blood cells, but more so into a better ability to transport and utilize oxygen,' Brian Oestrike, CEO of Hypoxico Altitude Training Systems tells us. Climbers like Ushakov use hypoxic tents to ready themselves for the unforgiving mountain conditions atop the globe's tallest peaks. Saturating your blood oxygen levels can be beneficial in several ways, reducing the risk of altitude sickness and preparing your body for the tiring effects of altitude. 'You improve your comfort and safety margin as you're ascending up through the mountains,' Oestrike explains. 'You sleep like garbage if you're not acclimatized, you lose your appetite, so you wither away as those things happen. By acclimatizing beforehand and using this equipment, you can offset your expedition, it improves your safety and your comfort margin.' By mimicking arduous alpine conditions, hypoxic tents can reduce the time it takes to acclimatize. 'Most people, if they're going to the Himalayas, historically have a six to eight-week expedition itinerary,' continues Oestrike. 'It takes that long for your body to slowly adapt and build the red blood cells that carry oxygen and allow you to climb safely." Ultra-running superstar Kilian Jornet slept inside a hypoxic tent for eight weeks before his maiden ascent of Mount Everest, mimicking altitudes of 13,000ft (3,962m) to 16,000ft (4,877m) without leaving sea level. He then became the fastest man to climb Everest alone and without oxygen, summiting the 29,000ft (8,850m) behemoth in just 26 hours. Although they're becoming increasingly popular with climbers and other extreme athletes, hypoxic tents do have their limitations and experts say they cannot be trusted as the sole method for acclimatization. "It's not the full acclimatization. I would say it's the first step," says Grégoire Millet, Professor of Exercise Physiology at the Institute of Sport Sciences in Lausanne, France. He explains that, even after months of sleeping in a hypoxic tent, "you will use some acclimatization, but not the full spectrum. You can be fully acclimatized in the tent, and not acclimatized to the real mountain". In other words, hypoxic tents cannot fully prepare the body for the rigours and difficulties of climbing at very high altitudes. In the Himalayas, elite climbers (and paying clients) on expeditions aiming for the highest peaks enter what is known as the Death Zone, an extremely dangerous zone above 26,247ft (8,000m), where besides having to deal with temperatures potentially tumbling to -31°F (-35°C) and highly technical terrain, the oxygen in the air is so low it's impossible for humans to survive for long. "You have to go to the real mountain for at least a few days before you travel," advises Millet, an expert in acclimatization technology. He advises climbers to use the tents in combination with traditional acclimatization methods, like sleeping atop smaller mountains, before tackling any major peaks. "It's better to use the tents, and then before you go to the Himalayas, it's recommended that you go for at least a few days to the Alps," he says. He says your body acclimatizes differently at real altitude and, despite their many benefits, hypoxic tents cannot fully replicate the tough conditions and and lack of oxygen in the mountains. It's not just mountaineers who put hypoxic tents to good use. All manner of sports people, from swimmers to footballers, use simulated altitude environments to expand their physical capabilities and access the benefits of altitude training. 'If you can transport and utilize oxygen better, that leads to better performance benefits, and literally just more ability to consume oxygen,' says Oestrike. "Most of the elite athletes, they have a hypoxic chamber at home," adds Millet. "It's not a tent, but it's a real chamber. It's the same idea, you decrease the oxygen concentration in the room." By training and sleeping at altitude, athletes can increase what's known as their hemoglobin mass, which boosts the amount of oxygen they can utilize during exercise. As Millet explains, this requires considerably more time than mountain acclimatization: "Every 100 hours sleeping in the tent, you will increase your hemoglobin by one percent." Every member of the US Olympic rowing quad who won gold at the Paris 2024 games reportedly slept in hypoxic tents for six weeks before racing. Although they're designed for elite athletes, hypoxic tents can be useful to outdoor enthusiasts of all abilities, helping to build fitness and intensify workouts. When it comes to climbing, Oestrike suggests that hypoxic tents are even more useful to amateurs than professionals. 'Most people who are committed to an 8,000m (26,247ft) peak know what they're getting into, they know what the training looks like, and they know what it takes to prepare. 'High-level athletes are already training super intensively. So the person that's more modest and maybe needs to lose a little weight, they're going to see a greater upside.' Of course, hypoxic tents are not required for easy-to-medium-difficulty ascents. Nor are they absolutely essential to climb giants like Mount Everest. Traditional, slower, acclimatization has proven itself as an effective, stress-tested method of alpine preparation. Rather, hypoxic tents are an additional and convenient method of acclimatizing, to be used along with high-altitude climbing and intensive training. We continue to invite Chinese and international scholars, translators of the work, practitioners of its concepts, and overseas readers to share their insights, understandings and reflection on China's philosophy of science and technology development and international cooperation. In the fifth article of the "Translator's Voices" column, Global Times (GT) reporter Ma Ruiqian talked to Tomokazu Ueno (Ueno), a Japanese expert at the Center for Asia-Pacific of China International Communications Group. Ueno was involved in the translation and editorial work for the Japanese editions of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China. GT: China's scientific and technological development over the past decades - especially in recent years - has drawn global attention. Some say that technological innovation has become a "new calling card" of China. Do you agree with this view? You've mentioned that the application of technology in everyday life has brought greater convenience to ordinary people. What experiences from your work and life in China have led you to feel this way? Ueno: I fully agree with this view - technology has indeed become one of the symbols of China's modernization. What impresses me most is how quickly technological applications are integrated into society and made practical. For example, when I first arrived in Beijing and rented an apartment through a real estate agency, I was amazed to find that the entire rental process could be completed through a smartphone app. At places like train stations and hospitals, online systems are also widely used, so there's almost no need to wait in long lines like before. What also shocked me was that not only young people, but even most elderly people can use smartphones proficiently. Nearly all purchases can be made via mobile payment, which brings great convenience to daily life. To be honest, after getting used to this lifestyle, every time I go back to Japan to visit family, I find it a bit troublesome to carry cash, a wallet, transportation cards and various point cards again. GT: Yes, technological innovation not only facilitates the daily lives of ordinary people in China but also serves as a key driver for the high-quality development of related industries. In May, during an inspection tour in Central China's Henan Province, President Xi, emphasized the importance of "technological empowerment" and "independent innovation." You have witnessed firsthand how technology is empowering the logistics and agricultural sectors in Xinjiang. How do you view the significance of technological empowerment for the development of Chinese industries? Ueno: When I was interviewing in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, I was deeply impressed by the high level of mechanization in local agriculture. Not only are large tractors used during the harvest, but new agricultural technologies are also widely applied in planting methods, field management, product transportation, environmental protection and water conservation. Agricultural technology is widely applied across the board. I realized that in China, even agriculture - one of the most traditional industries - is actively embracing high-tech tools. This not only significantly increases farmers' incomes but also strongly boosts local development. This example shows that China clearly understands that in order to improve people's livelihoods and help them lead better lives, it is essential to revitalize local industries and promote sustainable development in different regions. The key to achieving this is technological innovation. In China, progress in high technology is closely tied to improvements in living standards. GT: The fourth volume of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China includes an article titled "Strive for Greater Strength and Self-Reliance in Science and Technology." In the article, President Xi points out that "science and technology respond to the call of the times and have a global impact; they belong to all of humanity." How do you understand the "global impact" of science and technology as mentioned by President Xi? Ueno: The way I understand this is that science and technology know no borders - they can bring benefits to the entire world and help address global challenges. China has consistently emphasized contributing to the world through "Chinese wisdom" and "Chinese solutions," and it has put this philosophy into practice. Chinese technologies and their applications have already played a role in many areas around the world - including environmental protection, poverty alleviation, industrial development and improvements in people's livelihoods - achieving notable results. There is no doubt that the path China is taking - one that respects the idea that science and technology respond to the call of the times and have a global impact - is the right path for today's world. GT: At the meeting with China's sci-tech workers in 2024, President Xi said that Chinese modernization should be supported by sci-tech modernization. You will soon host the fifth season of Finding Answers in China, which also focuses on Chinese modernization. How do you understand the idea that science and technology "respond to the call of the times"? How do you think sci-tech modernization has contributed to the success of Chinese modernization? Ueno: I believe that "responding to the call of the times" means that science and technology reflect the defining features of a given era and serve as a driving force that propels modern society forward. One of my strongest impressions regarding this idea came during an interview I conducted for Finding Answers in China, when I spoke with a Japanese entrepreneur engaged in water treatment projects in China. He remarked that while some countries still only prioritize development at the expense of environmental protection - and some leaders even continue to question the reality of global warming - China, along with the global mainstream, has shifted toward emphasizing environmental. Environmental protection technology is one of the most representative fields that respond to the call of the times, and I've personally witnessed how China has significantly increased its attention and investment in this area over the past decade. This perfectly embodies the principle of "green development" emphasized in Chinese modernization - using technology to resolve the tension between development and the environment, and striving for harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature. GT: In his article "Strive for Greater Strength and Self-Reliance in Science and Technology," President Xi stated, "We should participate to the full in global science and technology governance, contribute Chinese wisdom, and shape a philosophy of technology for good purposes." In your view, what is the significance of China's philosophy and practice of "technology for good purposes" for the international community, especially for the vast number of Global South countries? Ueno: Science and technology have a dual nature - depending on how they are used, they can either advance human development or cause harm. The philosophy of "technology for good purposes" is essentially a profound proposition about how a country should make good use of its scientific and technological resources within the international community. From a global perspective, developing countries with relatively weak scientific foundations have an even greater need for science and technology to achieve development. China not only makes active calls, but also takes concrete actions to share its technological achievements with these countries, aiming to bring benefits to all of humanity. This approach emphasizes not monopoly over technology and wealth, but sharing and mutual benefit. Such a philosophy helps narrow the development gap between nations and thereby promotes global stability and prosperity. GT: What are your expectations for China's further participation in global science and technology governance and its growing role in the future of technological development? In Japan, there are sometimes mixed views regarding China's pursuit of self-reliance and its technological rise. What is your opinion on this? And what message would you like to share about bilateral cooperation in the field of science and technology? Ueno: In interviews with Japanese companies operating in China, I've noticed that many of them are now not only setting up manufacturing bases in China but also relocating their research and development centers here. I believe there is already a solid foundation and a wealth of achievements in China-Japan cooperation in science and technology, with considerable potential for further growth. Looking ahead, I hope both sides can continue to expand collaboration based on their respective strengths. However, especially since the beginning of this year, there seems to be a growing headwind against cooperation. Science, by its nature, is a pursuit of rationality. It is regrettable when irrational political interference obstructs scientific collaboration. China has not compromised under such pressure and continues to uphold the principle of win-win cooperation. I can sense that China is playing an increasingly important role in guiding the world toward the right path.
