Avenue forge poignant partnership with British Polio 66 years after Hall's death

Yahoo09-03-2025

Bradford (Park Avenue) have officially partnered with British Polio, nearly 70 years after one of their former players tragically passed away from the condition.
Jeff Hall, a talented right-back, grew up in Wilsden and joined Avenue shortly after the Second World War.
He never made a professional appearance for the club, but he played in their youth sides and in their Yorkshire League team as an amateur.
Hall joined Birmingham City in 1950 at the age of 20, where his career flourished.
He helped the Blues get promoted to the top-flight, reached the FA Cup final and he won 17 England caps.
But Hall's last game of football came at the age of just 29, for Birmingham away to Portsmouth in March 1959.
Two days later, Hall became ill with polio and his condition deteriorated rapidly, with him becoming paralysed and losing his speech before dying on April 4.
British Polio is a national charity dedicated to supporting and empowering people living with polio and post-polio syndrome (PPS).

This partnership highlights Avenue's commitment to making a difference beyond the football pitch, working alongside organisations that have a real and lasting impact on people's lives.
British Polio is the only UK national charity dedicated to helping those affected by polio and PPS, a neurological condition that impacts an estimated 120,000 people in the UK.
Many survivors contracted polio during the pandemics of the 1930s, 40s, and 50s, with lasting effects that often result in mobility issues, reduced lung capacity, and other serious health complications.
The charity provides vital support, advocacy, and resources to help individuals live full and independent lives.

This partnership is particularly meaningful for Avenue, given their historic connection to Hall.
His untimely passing had a profound impact on football and public health, sparking a national push for polio vaccinations across the UK.
Honouring his memory through this partnership is a powerful reminder of how football can drive positive change in society.
Avenue said: 'We are honoured that British Polio has chosen to partner with us.
'Their decision to collaborate with Bradford (Park Avenue) reinforces our reputation as a community-driven, socially responsible football club.

'Together, we will raise awareness, support those affected by polio and PPS, and work towards making a real difference in the lives of those in need.
'We look forward to working with British Polio and encourage our supporters and corporate partners to get involved in this fantastic cause.

US defender Naomi Girma returns to the USWNT after an eventful year

It's been an eventful year for defender Naomi Girma, who not only moved to a new country but also dealt with an injury before winning a pair of trophies with Chelsea. Now Girma is back with the U.S. national soccer team for the first time in 2025, looking to build off last year's Olympic success and lay the groundwork for the 2027 Women's World Cup. '(It's) just fun to be back in the environment together, and for me to get back in the swing of things, and keep building on what I was able to do with the team last year,' Girma said. The United States is set to play China on Saturday at Allianz Field in Saint Paul, Minnesota. The team then travels to St. Louis to face Jamaica on Tuesday. Girma was called into January camp with the national team, but left prematurely because of a calf injury. That same month, Girma became the first woman to command a $1 million transfer fee when she was acquired by Chelsea from the San Diego Wave for $1.1 million. She dealt with another calf injury she sustained in her debut with Chelsea, but recovered in time to help her team win the Women's Super League and the FA Cup. Girma said the move to Europe has been a rewarding experience. 'It was a big move for me, not just soccer-wise, life-wise, too. I think it was a big step out of my comfort zone," she said. "Leaving California, living somewhere different and playing in a different culture and country. I guess for myself, it's a new challenge and new test, and that's been really exciting.' During last year's Paris Olympics, U.S. coach Emma Hayes couldn't believe how good Girma was. 'I've never seen a player as good as her at a center back. She got everything: poise, composure, she defends, she anticipates, she leads,' Hayes said at the time. 'I mean, wow. Unbelievable.' Girma, a California native who played at Stanford, made her debut for the national team in 2022. That same year she was the No. 1 pick in the National Women's Soccer League draft by the San Diego Wave and won both the league's Rookie of the Year and Defender of the Year honors. She was the U.S. Soccer women's Player of the Year in 2023. Girma was key to the U.S. team's success at the Olympics. The United States won all six games, and the defense with Alyssa Naeher in goal allowed opponents only two goals over the course of the tournament. While she's just 24, Girma is now one of the more seasoned players with the national team and has taken on more of a leadership role as Hayes looks to develop younger players. 'She said she was excited to have me back, and just wanted me to focus on feeling good within the team, getting comfortable with playing with new people and just enjoy being back in (with the team),' Girma said about her first conversation with Hayes upon her return. 'I think the leadership and other things will come as we're playing in sessions and in games." The United States is currently missing several key contributors from last year's gold medal-winning squad. Sophia Wilson and Mallory Swanson are both on maternity leave. Trinity Rodman is dealing with a nagging back issue. Now a year into the role, Hayes has been expanding the pool of players with an eye toward the future. One newcomer on the roster for the two upcoming games is 32-year-old midfielder Lo'eau LaBonta, who could make her national team debut. 'My job is to develop a larger group of players that by the time we reach a tournament setting have been given the right exposures to put ourselves in the best position possible,' Hayes said on Friday. 'I think we're on track with that.' ___ AP soccer:

Bradford-based young people's health charity receives LNER funding

A Bradford charity dedicated to helping young people to build positive mental health has received funding through LNER's Customer and Community Investment Fund. Working with secondary schools in the district, Step2 delivers workshops designed to strengthen pupils' mental and emotional resilience. The charity teaches effective emotional communication skills and positive coping mechanisms, as well as supporting teachers, parents, school staff, and the community to work together to build "a wider culture of positive mental health." Chloe Love, service lead at Step2, said: "We share skills with young people which empower them to help themselves, both emotionally and mentally. "The funding from the LNER Customer and Community Investment Fund means we can reach more young people, teaching them how to cope with life's inevitable challenges. "We want young people in Bradford not just to survive, but to thrive and build a better future for themselves and their families, ultimately benefitting Bradford as a whole." Gemma Longbottom, special educational needs and disabilities coordinator at Titus Salt School, said: "Our pupils enjoy their sessions with Chloe, taking part in fun activities which build their mental health skills." King Charles Subtly Let His Opinion of Trump Be Known After Their Relationship Took a Dramatic Turn

King Charles has made a clear stance against President Donald Trump. The Monarch gave a speech in Canada's parliament about the nation staying 'strong and free' amid threats from the US President of making the northern country a 51st state. This was the first time King Charles opened up Canada's Parliament in his reign. In his speech, he addressed the country's sovereignty. 'We must face reality: since the Second World War, our world has never been more dangerous and unstable. Canada is facing challenges that, in our lifetimes, are unprecedented,' Charles said in French, one of Canada's national languages. The Monarch affirmed Canada's sovereignty, saying the 'True North is indeed strong and free.' Charles also mentioned when his mother Queen Elizabeth opened up Parliament in 1957 amid the backdrop of the Cold War and fresh out of World War II, he noted that, 'freedom and democracy were under threat. Today, Canada faces another critical moment.'Newly elected Prime Minister Mark Carney invited King Charles after rebuking Trump's threats of making the country a US state. According to the Associated Press, the King does not write his speeches in Parliament, and instead he reads what was put before him by Canada's government. He can also make some remarks of his own. King Charles serves as a nonpartisan head of state. Shortly after the speech, Trump posted on social media: 'It will cost $61 Billion Dollars if they remain a separate, but unequal, Nation, but will cost ZERO DOLLARS if they become our cherished 51st State. They are considering the offer!' Recently, King Charles wrote a letter to President Trump with the intent of another state dinner. After it was shared by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump shared the contents of the letter: 'Quite apart from this presenting an opportunity to discuss a wide range of issues of mutual interest, it would also offer a valuable chance to plan a historic second state visit to the United Kingdom. As you will know, this is unprecedented by a US president. That is why I would find it helpful for us to be able to discuss, together, a range of options for location and programme content.' Trump previously expressed a desire to go to the UK for his second state visit. 'They're going to do a second, as you know, a second fest,' Trump said, adding, 'That's what it is: a fest, and it's beautiful, and it's the first time it's ever happened to one person.'
