Patriots set to release linebacker Ja'Whaun Bentley

Boston Globe28-03-2025

The Patriots have added inside linebackers Robert Spillane and Jack Gibbons, and outside linebacker K'Lavon Chaisson, in free agency this offseason. They join a group that includes holdovers Jahlani Tavai, Anferneee Jennings, and Christian Elliss (who signed a deal worth a guaranteed $7.5 million to return).

Last season, the 28-year-old Bentley was one of a dwindling number of players who remained from the Patriots' Super Bowl era. However, over the last couple of months, Bentley, defensive end Deatrich Wise, and cornerback Jonathan Jones have been released or signed elsewhere. Long snapper Joe Cardona stands as the last remaining link to the team that won the Super Bowl against the Rams in February 2019.

Texans C.J. Gardner-Johnson Doesn't Hold Back on Eagles Trade Ahead of Minicamp

Texans C.J. Gardner-Johnson Doesn't Hold Back on Eagles Trade Ahead of Minicamp originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Over offseason after their Super Bowl LIX win, the Philadelphia Eagles shocked the NFL world with the trade of a key safety that helped hold off the Kansas City Chiefs. Advertisement The Eagles traded C.J. Gardner-Johnson to the Houston Texans in exchange for former first-round pick Kenyon Green and a 2026 fifth-round selection, even after Gardner-Johnson posted six interceptions last season. Months after the trade, Gardner-Johnson has talked about the trade and even took to social media recently to seemingly respond to comments made by defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. At a workout and interview with Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2, Gardner-Johnson talked about being "disrespected" by the offseason buzz. "I feel highly disrespected, but it's a business,' Gardner-Johnson said. 'Never was an All-Pro or Pro Bowl! Never! Led the league in interceptions. What more do you want? Advertisement 'People say, 'He's a hazard, he's this, he's that.' I never been no hazard, bro. They got no real issues on me. That black ball ain't going to work on me, because I got me a ring. I got me one. I got three more championships in me. I'm probably going to win the next three. I'm going to get me another Super Bowl this year. Just watch.' Gardner-Johnson, 27, has set his sights on Super Bowl LX with the Texans. Houston is a franchise with a talented roster, especially its stacked defense, but they've never reached the AFC title game before with six losses in the divisional round of the playoffs. Advertisement "I can't speak for everybody, but I know that we're gonna get in there and be at the top at the end of the year and have a chance to compete for a championship," Gardner-Johnson said. 'I think that's why I'm here. I'm proud to be a Texan. I want to make coach Ryans proud. Coming together and trying to win one together, it would be kind of amazing.' Related: C.J. Packers: Picking most undesirable landing spot for released CB Jaire Alexander

Packers: Picking most undesirable landing spot for released CB Jaire Alexander The Green Bay Packers released two-time Pro Bowler and two-time second-team All-Pro Jaire Alexander on Monday, ending a seven-year relationship between player and team and allowing the veteran cornerback to pick his next team as a free agent. The Packers freely admit Alexander is a great player when available, but injuries and missed time -- combined with his contract over the next two seasons -- were the primary reasons why he's no longer in Green Bay. The next question: Where will Alexander land? While his injury history is a concern, Alexander is still a 28-year-old player with a decorated history of elite play at a premium position, and several teams should be interested. A trade was preferred by the Packers both for compensation in return and deciding Alexander's next team. Now, the player will get a chance to pick where he goes, and it's possible Alexander will land with a division or conference rival. What would be the most undesirable landing spot for Alexander from the Packers point of view? Here are our picks: Zach Kruse: Minnesota Vikings The Vikings have won three of the last four games against the Packers, are coming off a 14-win season and possess one of the most talented and experienced rosters in football around first-year starting quarterback J.J. McCarthy. Adding Alexander -- another former Packer -- would give defensive coordinator Brian Flores a potential lockdown corner and more freedom to call more of his exotic and chaotic blitzes. No one in Green Bay wants Aaron Jones and Alexander on the same roster just across state lines. The Packers will hope Alexander gets out of the NFC North and out of the conference entirely. Brandon Carwile: Philadelphia Eagles Any NFC North team is a good answer, but the Philadelphia Eagles are also an annoying possibility. After parting ways with Darius Slay this offseason, the Eagles might be looking to add a veteran to shore up their young cornerback room. Alexander joining forces with the defending Super Bowl champs, who happened to beat the Packers in Week 1 and then ended their season in the Wild Card round of the playoffs, would be a gut punch. However, it's exactly the kind of move general manager Howie Roseman is known for making. Brennen Rupp: Minnesota Vikings Jaire Alexander was a fan favorite for a lot of Green Bay fans. When he was healthy (2022) he was one of the best cornerbacks in the league. Since that season he played in just 14 games and the Packers needed to cut ties. I don't have a lot of faith that he'll be able to stay on the field for whatever team lands him, but it would be difficult to watch him stay healthy and put together an All-Pro caliber season for a division rival that has a need for a player like Alexander. Mark Oldacres: Detroit Lions Alexander joining any NFC North rival, as spurned Packers tend to do, would be the worst-case scenario, but the Lions in particular would be the most irritating. The division champions the last two years have encountered some adversity this offseason, losing both coordinators. Top spot in the North looks to be there for the taking in 2025, but adding Alexander could help the Lions hold onto their crown.

Aaron Rodgers is off the free agent and dating markets. Steelers QB says he recently got married

Associated Press PITTSBURGH (AP) — Aaron Rodgers added another ring to his collection before he even signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The four-time NFL MVP quarterback and Super Bowl champion said Tuesday after his first practice with the Steelers that he got married 'a couple months ago." Rodgers was spotted wearing a ring on his left ring finger in a photo the Steelers shared after the 41-year-old signed a one-year deal to join the team for the 2025 season. When asked if the ring was an indication he was married, Rodgers replied, 'Yeah, it's a wedding ring.' He wore the ring on Tuesday while participating in drills with his new team. Rodgers has revealed little about his bride. During an appearance on 'The Pat McAfee Show' last fall, he mentioned he was dating a woman named Brittani but offered no other details. His previous dating history includes long-term relationships with race car driver Danica Patrick and actors Olivia Munn and Shailene Woodley. ___ AP NFL: recommended in this topic
