‘Dream on': Zahid tells Perikatan over proposal to form Perak government with Umno
TAPAH, April 25 — Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has brushed off Perikatan Nasional's (PN) idea of forming the Perak government with Umno, calling it nothing more than wishful thinking.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Barisan Nasional chairman, said that PN may have realised their waning support in Ayer Kuning, prompting the proposal.
However, he said that such a move was unnecessary, as Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad has thus far provided excellent service to the state.
The Deputy Prime Minister also expressed confidence that, under Saarani's leadership, all development challenges and the needs of the people will continue to be effectively addressed.
'It would have been better if such a proposal (Umno working with PN) had been made a long time ago.
'But it only came up now in Ayer Kuning — well, it's now 12.30pm — if we were dreaming, it must have just been a daydream,' he said at a press conference after attending the Santuni Kasih Syawal ceremony with the Orang Asli community, at Kampung Orang Asli Sungai Kroh, here, today.
Yesterday, the media reported that opposition leader, Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, said that the pig farm issue in Perak, particularly in Ayer Kuning, could be resolved if Umno were to merge with PN to form the state government.
Regarding the recurring national issues which PN often raises during its campaigns, Ahmad Zahid said that these problems were irrelevant, as every local issue raised had already been resolved, as demonstrated in the Nenggiri (Kelantan) and Mahkota (Johor) by-elections.
In a separate matter, Ahmad Zahid, who is also the minister of rural and regional development, clarified that he never mentioned the name of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in connection with the case involving the release of a responsibility letter as a trustee for Umno assets.
Previously, the media reported that Dr Mahathir denied allegations that he had refused to sign the letter of release of responsibility as a trustee for Umno assets.
The Ayer Kuning by-election was called following the death of incumbent Ishsam Shahruddin on February 22.
This by-election sees a three-cornered fight between Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir; Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate Abd Muhaimin Malek; and Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) candidate Bawani KS.
The Election Commission (EC) has scheduled polling day for tomorrow. — Bernama

Umno sees grassroots surge with over 20,000 branches active
KUALA LUMPUR: Umno saw a significant resurgence at the grassroots level, with a record 20,710 branches nationwide holding their annual meetings this year, said party secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki. The performance of Umno ministers, as well as leaders helming government-linked companies and key agencies, has been commendable," he added. The increased enthusiasm, he added, also reflected growing confidence in the party's direction, bolstered by its performance in recent by-elections. Umno must remain in govt to push Malay, Bumiputera agenda
KUALA LUMPUR: Umno will remain in the federal government to continue championing the Malay and Bumiputera agenda, said party deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. He described the decision as a strategic move, warning that exiting the government would simply allow another party to take its place. "If we leave, another party will fill the gap within two hours. We don't want to be spectators on the sidelines. "It is better to be in government, where we can drive new agendas suited to today's realities," he said. Mohamad, who is also the Rembau member of parliament, was speaking after launching the Cheras Umno division delegates meeting here today. He cited Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as one of the party's key focus areas. Although the portfolio is traditionally under the Human Resources Ministry, he said Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had taken the lead in addressing gaps, particularly affecting Malay youths. "Many are not dropping out because they failed exams, but because they never sat for them. "That's why we introduced the National TVET Policy, the National Tahfiz Policy and several other initiatives," he said. Mohamad said Umno was undertaking internal reforms to adapt to a shifting political landscape, following setbacks in the 2022 general election. "The political reality now is that no party, anywhere in the world, can govern alone. That era has ended. "We must be realistic. Although we have 192 divisions, our strategy should focus on constituencies we can win. "Political idealism can be misleading and dangerous," he said. "MCA will remain in BN"
PORT DICKSON: Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has expressed confidence that MCA will remain in the coalition, despite speculation of an internal push for the party to leave. Zahid, who is also Umno president, said MCA and MIC are key components in the formation of BN. "There's no such thing (as MCA leaving BN). "If it were happening, I'd hear it directly from MCA president Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong. "Perhaps there are movements by certain quarters; I've been told about that, but the decision of their central committee suggests otherwise. "God willing, they will remain with us in BN," said the deputy prime minister after launching the Port Dickson Umno division delegates meeting at the Fama Training Centre hall here this evening. Also present were Negri Sembilan Umno liaison committee chairman Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias and Port Dickson Umno chief Datuk Mohd Faizal Ramli. Zahid was commenting on a newspaper report regarding ongoing MCA divisional meetings, which are expected to determine whether the party will sever ties with Umno during its annual general assembly scheduled for October. The issue reportedly stems from growing dissatisfaction among MCA grassroots leaders, who feel the party has been sidelined by Umno. Zahid said MCA had struggled in the 14th and 15th general elections, having failed to retain their seats. He said Umno must treat its component party allies with respect and offer assistance when needed. "Umno must support our friends when they're in trouble.
