Kwik Fit founder Sir Tom Farmer dies aged 84
The founder of the Kwik Fit garage chain, Sir Tom Farmer, has died at the age of 84.
The Edinburgh-born businessman died peacefully at his home in the city on Friday, his family said.
He built the company into the world's biggest independent tyre and automotive chain, selling it to Ford for £1bn in 1999.
Sir Tom owned a majority stake in Hibernian FC for 28 years, selling his interest in the club in 2019.
Sir Tom was born in Leith in 1940 and first opened a tyre business in 1964.
He started Kwik Fit in 1971, eventually operating in more than 2,000 locations in 18 countries.
He was knighted in 1997 for his services to the automotive industry and was made a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO) in 2009 for his charitable work.
A statement from his family said: "Sir Tom's long and extensive career touched many aspects of Scottish and UK life.
"His business career is well documented, as was his commitment to philanthropy, his many public roles and his unwavering support and appreciation for the communities and people that he lived his life within."
Sir Tom's philanthropic work saw him awarded the Carnegie Medal and he became a Knight Commander with Star of the Order of St. Gregory the Great, an honour bestowed by the Pope, in 1997.
"Sir Tom's Roman Catholic faith was present throughout all areas of his life. He attended mass weekly in Edinburgh and enjoyed the friendship and company of many people with the Catholic community both here in Scotland and further afield," his family said.
"Sir Tom will be remembered by many for his deep commitment to his family, his work and his faith and for being at all times a proud Scotsman," they added.
A statement from Hibernian on the social media platform X said:
"Hibernian FC are devastated to hear of the passing of former owner Sir Tom Farmer, aged 84.
"Thank you for everything, Tom. Rest in peace."

Ontario inks trade deals with Saskatchewan and Alberta ahead of meeting with Carney
SASKATOON - Alberta and Saskatchewan signed agreements with Ontario on Sunday to remove trade barriers ahead of a meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney to hash out a plan they hope will supercharge the economy. The memorandum of understanding between Saskatchewan and Ontario sees both provinces mutually recognize each other's goods, workers and investment, while a statement from the Alberta government says its MOU with Ontario aims to improve the free flow of goods and services between the two provinces. The Alberta statement also says the agreement will simplify requirements for regulated professions such as skilled trades, making it easier for professionals to work across provincial boundaries. Both deals, which were signed in Saskatoon ahead of a first ministers meeting in the city Monday, pledge to advance measures that would see willing provinces allow the sale of alcohol directly to consumers. Ontario Premier Doug Ford said the deals help grow provincial economies as U.S. President Donald Trump threatens more tariffs on Canadian steel. 'We're going to band together,' Ford said when talking about the agreement with Saskatchewan. 'We've never been attacked by any leader in the world like we have by President Trump. He doesn't give two hoots about Canada.' '(But) he's going to have a rude awakening. We're going to fight like we've never fought before.' It's Ford's latest deals with provinces to open trade, measures he says could unlock $200 billion in economic gains. Alberta said its agreement with Ontario also welcomes the possibility of Ontario joining the New West Partnership Trade Agreement, which has worked to streamline regulations and standards across British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. 'It's time to stop letting outdated rules hold us back and show Canadians what real economic leadership looks like,' Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said in a news release Sunday. The premiers are meeting Monday with Carney to discuss major nation-building projects that could boost the economy. Ford said the prime minister needs to remove regulations to make it easier to build projects. That includes scrapping the Impact Assessment Act, he said. 'It all depends on the speed right now (in getting projects built),' Ford said. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe said he's hoping for a port-to-port corridor in Western Canada to ship more goods out of northern B.C. and Hudson Bay in northern Manitoba. 'It's the largest single opportunity that I've seen in my lifetime,' Moe said. 'All we need to do is come together, and then stand by side by side and defend the opportunities we have from a trade perspective. Defend them like hell.' Building more oil and gas pipelines must be part of Canada's future, Moe added. 'If we truly are going to become the strongest economy in the G7 nations, if we truly are going to become a global energy superpower, it means we need to open up the opportunity for all of our industries,' Moe said. 'I think (Carney) is aware that there's a feeling of alienation in certain areas of the nation.' Both Alberta and Saskatchewan have long had grievances with former prime minister Justin Trudeau, who they say made it difficult for the industry to build energy projects. Smith has said more pipelines are the only way to get more products to market efficiently and without one, there could be a national unity crisis. She has called on Carney to scrap the oil and gas emissions cap and clean electricity regulations, repeal industrial carbon pricing and overhaul regulations. But getting a pipeline through Quebec might be difficult. The province had opposed the former Energy East oil pipeline from Alberta and rejected the GNL Quebec project in Saguenay in 2021. However, Quebec Premier François Legault said last month he's open to some projects. Ford said all provinces must be on the same page for any pipeline to move forward. Ford is recalling 1,075,299 vehicles in the U.S. over a software error that potentially prevents the rearview camera from displaying a proper live feed. More specifically, the rearview camera's images may delay, freeze, or not display at all when affected vehicles are in reverse, according to the NHTSA's report. The recall applies to Ford's 2021-2024 Bronco, F-150, Edge, and 2023-2024 Escape, Corsair, F-250, F-350, F-450, F-550, and F-600. The 2022-2024 Expedition, 2022-2025 Transit, 2021-2023 Mach-E, Lincoln Nautilus, 2024 Ranger, Mustang, and the 2022-2024 Navigator are also impacted. A dealer or over-the-air software update will soon solve the problem with the vehicles' accessory protocol interface module (APIM) software, which serves as an operating system for a car's dashboard. This operating system helps a vehicle's infotainment system control programs, including but not limited to apps and navigation maps. There are no warning signs before the described rearview camera problem occurs. Documents related to the issue report that Ford is aware of one minor crash associated with the software problem, resulting in property damage, but no injuries or deaths. The automaker was initially contacted by the NHTSA about the issue in January after receiving three dozen complaints for 2021-2023 Ford F-150 models. Potentially affected owners are scheduled to receive a notice of the recall by mail between May 19 and May 23, whereas dealers were informed of the recall on May 12. Those driving impacted models compatible with over-the-air software updates must be connected to Wi-Fi to successfully complete the remote upgrade or visit a dealer. Ford's recall represented this week's largest recall order, with Toyota coming in second place at 443,444 vehicles. The Michigan-based automaker also leads all manufacturers in 2025 recalls at over 50, and the gap between first and second place is significant, according to CarEdge data. Through May 15, the Volkswagen Group has the second-highest number of recalls in 2025, at 14. General Motors and Stellantis North America are tied for the third-most at 11. Mercedes-Benz and Honda are tied for fourth with 9 recalls through May 15. Stellantis had the most recalls last year at 71. Ford models like the Explorer, Aviator, and Expedition have all undergone seatbelt recalls. The Volkswagen Group had one of the most unique recalls this year when its electric van was recalled due to a third-row bench seat that was deemed too wide for the van's number of seatbelts. Volkswagen dealers are responding by installing trim parts that reduce the rear seat's usable width. While Stellantis dethroned Ford's 2023 position as having the most recalls in 2024, the automaker has recaptured this undesirable status, and the competition isn't even close this year. The Michigan-based automaker has also issued the most recalls out of any manufacturer in history, with the F-150 pickup being the model most associated with its recalls. As bad luck would have it, the truck is yet again making an appearance with its inclusion in the NHTSA's list of vehicles potentially impacted by the rearview camera defect.
