
LCGPA honors 26 winners at third Local Content Awards in Riyadh
RIYADH: The Local Content and Government Procurement Authority recognized 26 public, private, nonprofit and individual contributors at its third Local Content Award ceremony on Wednesday in Riyadh.
The theme of the event was 'Applauding Your Impact.'
Organized under the patronage of Bandar Al-Khorayef, Saudi Arabia's minister of industry and mineral resources, the event celebrated efforts to advance local content development — a pillar of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's Vision 2030.
This aims to strengthen the economy by boosting domestic industries, reducing reliance on imports and empowering national talent.
The awards highlight achievements in meeting Local Content Requirements, or LCRs, which have raised government procurement spending on domestic goods and services from 28 percent in 2018 to 47 percent.
During his keynote speech, Al-Khorayef said that 396 Local Content Development Teams operated across government entities, while 270 state-owned firms had embedded LCRs into policies, driving their local spending to 50.7 percent in 2023.
In the government entities category, awards were distributed across two main paths and three subcategories.
In the path for Excellence in Local Content for Medium and Low-Spending Entities, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs claimed first place, the Roads General Authority ranked second, and the Digital Government Authority, or DGA, came in third.
Abdulaziz Al-Bader, general manager of procurement at the DGA, told Arab News: 'We have focused on localizing industries through technology-related agreements, such as those for digital circuits, where we have achieved impressive results.'
He said that advances in cloud computing and the unification of technical specifications for government technology purchases had further streamlined procurement.
Al-Bader said that 'our investment colleagues have made significant efforts, and the entity managing these investments has begun to see tangible outcomes.'
These measures, he explained, directly contributed to 'a reduction in government spending on such procurements and accelerated the purchasing process' — an outcome he attributed to rigorous standardization and localized industry partnerships.
STC Group secured the top award for Local Content Preference, while the National Water Company was among other notable honorees.
In the private sector, telecom company TAWAL and manufacturing firm FIPCO stood out among large enterprises. Small and medium enterprises such as Suwar Technology and Intra Defense Technologies were recognized for driving innovation in niche markets.
Reef National Foundation became the first nonprofit to be awarded for advancing local content goals. Individuals Lama Al-Hussein (first) and Abdulmajeed Marzouq (second) earned top honors for raising awareness of local content's economic impact.

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia's $500-billion giga-project NEOM has installed the Kingdom's first fully automated, remote-controlled cranes at its Red Sea port as it moves ahead with plans to begin operations in 2026. The delivery of next-generation ship-to-shore and electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes marks a key milestone in the development of Terminal 1, which will accommodate the world's largest container ships. NEOM is aiming to position the facility as a global logistics hub connecting Asia, Europe, and Africa. The facility supports Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 by contributing to economic diversification through enhanced trade, logistics, and industrial capabilities. As global supply chains shift toward resilience and efficiency, NEOM's strategic Red Sea location positions it as a vital link between Asia, Europe, and Africa. Sean Kelly, managing director of Port of NEOM, said: 'The arrival of our first automated cranes marks a tangible milestone as we lay the foundations for an advanced, future-ready port.' He added: 'We're not only accelerating industrial growth in northwest Saudi Arabia, but we're also setting a new benchmark for performance, efficiency, innovation and establishing a vital trade gateway for the Kingdom and the region beyond.' The new cranes will enable high-efficiency operations while allowing remote control from ergonomic workstations. Infrastructure developments, including a 900-meter quay wall and an 18.5-meter-deep channel, ensure the port can handle the largest vessels transiting the Suez Canal. Terminal 1 will also feature horizontal transport automation, boosting logistics capacity and regional industrial growth. Alongside infrastructure upgrades, the port is investing in local talent development. A specialized program is training Saudi workers, including women, for high-tech roles such as remote crane operations. Ten participants from Saudi Arabia's Tabuk region are currently in a two-year program combining technical training and mentorship. Trainee Hajjer Alatawi said: 'This experience has shown me that port logistics is far more complex than just moving cargo; it's about teamwork, precision and responsibility. Seeing more Saudi women entering this space gives me hope for a future where industries are defined by skills, not gender.' The press release added that by empowering Saudi workers with high-tech skills, 'Port of NEOM is supporting NEOM's vision of being a catalyst for a sustainable, diverse and innovative ecosystem that enables regional economic resilience and advances the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.'

NEOM's Green Hydrogen Plant Nears Completion
NEOM Green Hydrogen Company (NGHC) has reached a significant milestone in its green hydrogen project at Oxagon, Saudi Arabia. This joint venture includes Saudi utility giant ACWA Power, U.S.-based Air Products, and NEOM, the developer of Saudi Arabia's ambitious smart city project. The construction has now completed 80% across all key project areas, including the hydrogen production plant, wind garden, solar farm, and transmission infrastructure. Once fully operational by the end of 2026, NGHC plans to operate the world's largest green hydrogen plant. This facility will produce up to 600 tonnes of carbon-free hydrogen daily, significantly contributing to reducing global carbon emissions.
