Bangladesh replaces founding father Mujibur Rahman on currency as daughter Hasina faces trial
DHAKA, June 1 — Bangladesh today issued new banknotes to replace designs featuring its founding president, the father of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina who was overthrown last year.
The South Asian nation of some 170 million people has been run by a caretaker government since Hasina fled — whose trial opened today on charges of trying to crush the uprising against her government in August 2024.
Until now, all notes featured the portrait of her father, the late Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who led Bangladesh from independence from Pakistan in 1971 until soldiers assassinated him and most of his family in a 1975 coup.
'Under the new series and design, the notes will not feature any human portraits, but will instead showcase natural landscapes and traditional landmarks,' Bangladesh Bank spokesman Arif Hossain Khan told AFP.
Among the designs in the Muslim-majority nation are images of Hindu and Buddhist temples, as well as historical palaces.
They also include artwork of the late painter Zainul Abedin, depicting the Bengal famine during British colonial rule.
Another will depict the national martyrs' memorial for those who died in the independence war against Pakistan.
Today, notes for three of the nine different denominations were released.
'The new notes will be issued from the central bank's headquarters, and later from its other offices across the country,' he added.
'The other denominations of the notes with new designs will be released in phases'.
Existing notes and coins will remain in circulation alongside the new notes.
It is not the first time that the design has changed to reflect changing politics.
Initial notes issued in 1972 — after Bangladesh changed its name from East Pakistan — featured a map.
Later notes featured Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who led the Awami League, which Hasina also led during her 15 years in power.
When other parties were in charge — dominated by the powerful Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) — historic and archaeological sites featured.
The Awami League was banned last month pending the trial of Hasina and other party leaders.
Hasina, 77, is in self-imposed exile in India, and has defied an extradition order to attend her trial. — AFP

Musk's Starlink gets key India licence from telecoms ministry
India's satellite broadband service market is expected to be worth US$1.9 billion by 2030, making it lucrative for players like Starlink. (EPA images pic) NEW DELHI : Elon Musk's Starlink has received a licence to launch commercial operations in India from the telecoms ministry, two sources told Reuters today, clearing a major hurdle for the satellite provider, which must also show it meets security rules. The approval is good news for Musk, whose public spat with President Donald Trump threatens US$22 billion of SpaceX's contracts and space programmes with the US government. Starlink is the third company to get a licence from India's department of telecommunications, which has approved similar applications by Eutelsat's OneWeb and Reliance Jio to provide services in the South Asian nation. Starlink and the department of telecommunications did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The approval comes months after Musk met Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to the US, where the two discussed Starlink's long-delayed launch plans and India's concerns over meeting certain security conditions. Starlink has been waiting since 2022 for licences to operate commercially in India. While it has cleared a key hurdle, it is still a long way from launching commercial services. Starlink now needs a separate licence from India's space regulator which it is 'close' to securing, said a third source with direct knowledge of the process. It also needs to demonstrate, through testing and trials, that it meets the security rules it has signed up for, said one of the two sources. 'This will take a couple of months at least and will be a rigorous process,' said the person, adding that only once it gets an all clear from Indian security officials can it begin selling its equipment and services to customers. Indian telecom providers Jio and Bharti Airtel, in a surprise move in March, announced a partnership with Musk to stock Starlink equipment in their retail stores, but they will still compete on offering broadband services. Musk and billionaire Mukesh Ambani's Jio clashed for months over how India should grant spectrum for satellite services. India's government sided with Musk that spectrum should be assigned and not auctioned. India's telecom regulator in May proposed satellite service providers pay 4% of their annual revenue to the government for offering services, which domestic players have said is 'unjustifiably low' and will hurt their businesses. Deloitte predicts India's satellite broadband service market will be worth US$1.9 billion by 2030, making it lucrative for players like Starlink and Amazon's Kuiper, which is still awaiting a licence.

Pakistani TikTok star shot dead after ‘rejecting' man
Violence against women is pervasive in Pakistan, according to its human rights commission. (EPA Images pic) ISLAMABAD : Pakistani police on Tuesday said a 17-year-old TikTok star was shot dead by a man who had repeatedly contacted her online. Sana Yousaf, who turned 17 last week and had more than a million followers across her social media accounts, was killed at her home in the capital Islamabad yesterday evening. Police have arrested a 22-year-old on suspicion of her murder who spent hours loitering outside her home. 'It was a case of repeated rejections. The boy was trying to reach out to her time and again,' Islamabad police chief Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi said during a news conference. 'It was a gruesome and cold-blooded murder,' Rizvi added. Yousaf had more than 800,000 followers on TikTok, a wildly popular platform in Pakistan, where she posted lip-sync videos, skincare tips, and promotional content for beauty products. The last video posted on her account was hours before her murder, in which she was seen cutting a cake for her birthday. 'Rest in Peace' and 'Justice for Sana', read some comments under the video. Violence against women is pervasive in Pakistan according to the country's Human Rights Commission, and cases of women being attacked after rejecting marriage proposals are not uncommon. In 2021, 27-year-old Noor Mukadam was beheaded by her Pakistani-American boyfriend, Zahir Jaffer, after she rejected his marriage proposal in a case that sparked widespread anger. In 2016, Khadija Siddiqui survived being stabbed 23 times by a jilted ex-boyfriend.
