
From murals to yarn bombs: Meet three Aucklanders making art accessible to all
There's a unique network of people and organisations behind the Auckland art scene. Naomii Seah spoke to three of them to understand their mahi.
Walking through the streets of Tāmaki Makaurau, you're never short of interesting art to look at. The city is home to macro pieces like The Women's Suffrage mural at Te Hā o Hine place, and the iconic Boy Walking in Potters Park; as well as smaller installations like Thief and Twist, the bronze statues on Karangahape Road. Then there's the more transient works of our city, like the Yarn for Pride project in February this year, which saw the bike parking on Karangahape Road adorned with colourful scarves in honour of Auckland Pride.
Artworks like these enrich our experience of the city and bring communities together, as well as being quite simply delightful. Even so, it's getting harder for artists to create and produce work. Inflation, a cost-of-living crisis, and recent funding cuts have made art, and art-making, less accessible. Despite this grim outlook, some organisations, like the 21 local boards of Auckland Council, remain key supporters of arts and culture here. They help fund and manage many dedicated arts spaces and organisations across the city. The Spinoff spoke with three of these organisations about how they're keeping our arts scene alive and vibrant.
Siobhan Connelly, Studio One Toi Tū
Studio One Toi Tū cuts an imposing figure on the corner of Ponsonby and Karangahape Road. Once a police station, it's now an arts facility helmed by the Waitematā local board. The building's strong, square silhouette and late Victorian brick facade can be intimidating at first. But this initial impression is tempered by the artwork proudly displayed in the windows. Acrylic 'paint' drips from the upper windows, oozing art onto the street and the community beyond.
Inside you'll find art exhibitions and workshops, maker spaces and studios. Studio One Toi Tū aims to keep their offerings free or low cost to ensure everyone in the community can access arts and art spaces. Workshops here offer a chance to explore a wide range of mediums – from ceramics to print-making, oil-painting and more. On-site studios and spaces can also be hired for events and pop-up exhibitions. This ensures the space remains responsive and reactive to current events.
Supporting the local arts scene is the core of the Studio One Toi Tū kaupapa, says manager Siobhan Connelly. The team are all arts practitioners themselves, and they aim to offer wrap around support for new and emerging artists. Downstairs, by the front door, four gallery spaces provide an opportunity for new and emerging artists to display their work. The exhibits are programmed a year in advance, with 30 to 40 slots available each year.
'We often talk of the story of someone coming through Studio One Toi Tū,' says Connelly. 'There are people who have come to an exhibition, found out about the space, taken one of our courses, upskilled, then started doing markets, then applied for an exhibition. There's a real opportunity to nourish people starting on their arts journey. And that really fills our cup.'
'We talk about people coming here and doing their 'firsts' – teaching their first class, holding their first exhibition, having their first studio. These are all important steps to being a member of the creative sector.'
Jermaine Reihana, Kākano Youth Arts
Kākano Youth Arts Collective is a programme for vulnerable rangatahi and is run out of Corban Estate Arts Centre – a West Auckland arts precinct based on the historic grounds of the former Corban Estate Winery.
Three days a week, Kākano welcomes 18 young people between the ages of 12 and 21 to the ground-floor room of the estate. It's covered in colourful graffiti and paint splatters and is full of art supplies. Here, the participants are given the opportunity to develop an arts practice with experienced arts tutors. Jermaine Reihana is one of these tutors. He's been with the programme since 2015, following a stint as the resident artist at the estate.
'Kākano means 'the seed'. All we do as tutors and as a whānau is to pour as much tautoko support onto that seed and help it to grow. That's how each of our rangatahi develops their own art practice.'
The programme is not run like a classroom, Reihana stresses. That doesn't work for these rangatahi, who have mostly disengaged with mainstream education. Instead, each young person is given individual support, which extends not just through developing an arts practice, but to their wider lives. Kākano employs an in-house youth support coordinator, Sarah Candler, who helps young people navigate government systems and more.
'Our rangatahi rely on us a lot because they trust us. They're able to approach us with what happens in their lives and we can navigate that alongside them.'
Reihana says the programme not only builds skills and self-esteem but gives young people work experience. The collective sells works at exhibitions every year and has made work for clients including Google, KiwiRail, Auckland Transport, local boards and council. When artworks produced by the collective are sold, 80 percent of the proceeds go back into the programme.
Kākano Youth Arts Collective has a variety of sponsors, including Henderson-Massey Local Board, who were instrumental in setting up the programme in 2013, when it was piloted by director Mandy Patmore.
'We wouldn't be able to do what we do without the backing of Henderson-Massey local board,' says Reihana. 'They've helped tautoko and support a lot of our external projects. If you see public artwork in the area, nine times out of 10 we've had something to do with it.'
Though the alumni at Kākano Youth Arts Collective never truly leave, Reihana says one of the programme's biggest achievements is helping young people transition to further training or employment. The collective has a strong partnership with the Unitech School of Art and Design, and many young people go on to pursue Foundation, Certificate or Bachelor level qualifications there. Other Kākano alumni have gone on to Ama Training Group's animation programme and have become animators. Others still have found their way into the film industry post Kākano.
'We're not a course where young people come to us for six months and then get handed off. We're a whānau here, no one leaves here without a plan.'
Shona Dey, Albert-Eden Arts Broker
Shona Dey is a familiar face at Frasers Cafe, located at the iconic Mt Eden intersection. Dey is the arts broker for Albert-Eden Neighbourhood Arts. Funded by the Albert-Eden Local Board, this organisation supports and promotes community-led arts and cultural activities across the two neighbourhoods. They collaborate with local artists, event organisers and creative organisations to bring ideas to life with funding, advice, marketing help and more.
Dey describes her role as an arts broker succinctly: 'I'm a connector between community, arts practitioners, the local board and arts staff at Auckland Council. With local board funding, I help curate and deliver a programme of arts within the community informed by local happenings and the local environment.'
It's a role that sees Dey out and about in the community most days, grabbing coffees and teas with people. Albert-Eden Neighbourhood Arts aims to keep barriers to entry low, and Dey often acts as a mentor and guide to newer arts practitioners who apply. Her typical day might include liaising with practitioners, helping with post-project reports, connecting artists to venues or other resources, or attending and facilitating community events. Dey says that her role and the model of arts delivery in Albert-Eden is unique. There's no dedicated space or location beyond the Albert-Eden area itself. But the ephemeral nature of the model has its own benefits.
'It's a very efficient model. It's cost effective, and it's agile,' says Dey. 'We're able to respond to community needs very quickly. We're able to deliver projects in small, big and micro ways to where they're needed most.'
Some projects Dey has helped to facilitate include a self-published children's book written by a local postman, Mike Paterson, about the dogs he encounters on his post run. The launch was hosted at the local Time Out bookstore, and the initial print run sold out. Another is a photographic project by Sara Tautuku Orme, photographing local mana whenua, mātāwaka, kaumātua and kuia in Albert-Eden. Other projects have included theatrical, experiential arts projects aimed at activating the town centres, and increasing community cohesion and wellbeing. Arts projects can be microscale or larger in scope, with Dey trying to strike a balance. She says that the value of the arts is sometimes intangible, but the flow on effects of creating and seeing art are valuable.
'I think art is one of the pillars of mental health. It helps people feel safe in their community and like they belong. It's such an important way people communicate to others. The arts is also an important economic developer and enabler for this area, with impacts well beyond the initial programme.
'That's what I love about facilitating art in this role – it's never really over.'

What to watch over the long Matariki weekend

Matariki mā Puanga 2025 (Whakaata Māori, TVNZ+) Cosy up with a cuppa and a warm blanket to watch the Matariki celebrations beamed straight into your living room from 5.45am Friday, June 20. The mammoth five hour broadcast begins at dawn with a traditional hautapu ceremony at Tirorangi Marae in Ohakune, with hosts Stacey Morrison (Te Arawa, Ngāi Tahu) and Mātai Smith (Rongowhakaata, Ngāi Tāmanuhiri) inviting everyone across Aotearoa to explore the old traditions of Matariki – and create some new ones of their own. / Alex Casey Land of the Long White Cloud (TVNZ+) If you need an injection of Northland sand, surf and sun over the chilly weekend, not to mention some much-needed crack-up yarns, I highly recommend Florian Habicht's 2009 documentary Land of the Long White Cloud. Centred around the annual Snapper Classic fishing contest on Ninety Mile Beach, Habicht meets the competitors vying for the whopper $50,000 prize. But this is so much more than a documentary about a fishing contest – the sometimes staggering and frequently charming musings on love, life and death will have you falling hook, line and sinker. Habicht's equally excellent Kaikohe Demolition is also available on TVNZ+ for Matariki, plus there's an open air screening of James and Isey happening tonight in Kawakawa, and a couple of sessions in select Auckland cinemas over the weekend. / AC Runt (Neon) We stumbled across this charming and quirky Australian film last weekend, and had a delightful time watching it. Based on a book by Craig Silvey, Runt follows the lively adventures of 10-year-old Annie, who adopts a stray dog and enters him in an agility competition in the hope that the prize money will save their farm from drought and ruin. The trouble is, however, that Runt the dog gets stage fright when anyone other than Annie looks at him. With an impressive cast that includes Celeste Barber, Jai Courtney, Jack Thompson, Deborah Mailman and Matt Day, Runt is funny, heart-warming and full of sweet surprises. A wee gem for all the family. / Tara Ward Kōkā (in cinemas) Following a kuia named Hamo (Hinetu Dell), who picks up a wayward 20-something Jo (Darneen Christian) on her journey up the country, Kōkā follows a meditative and intergenerational road trip that traverses everywhere from boarded-up small towns to lush green bush to dripping caves. Director Kath Ahukata-Brown told The Spinoff that the film was 20 years in the making, and is an ode to her land and her people. 'I think the road movie genre shows a deeper connection to the land,' she says. 'I wanted the journey to tap into the collective desire we have in Aotearoa for finding those connections between each other, and protecting our land.' / AC Shrek: Kātahi Te Korokē (TVNZ+) From this week's New to Streaming: 'Shrek has been dubbed into more than 40 languages, but Shrek: Kātahi Te Korokē marks the first time a DreamWorks Animation title has been adapted into an indigenous language. Hot on the heels of several te reo Māori versions of Disney's beloved animated films, the adaptation is helmed by Tainui Stephens and stars the renowned musician and actor Maaka Pohatu as the titular gruff green ogre and Te Puaheiri Snowden as his wisecracking donkey sidekick. Experience the side-splitting, gross-out fairy tale like never before.' / Thomas Giblin Secrets Of The Octopus (Disney+) I loved My Octopus Teacher, but only recently recovered from its predictable but still heartbreaking ending. This series is completely mesmerising – it takes you under the sea all over the world to meet a cast of octopus who are shapeshifters, social networkers and masterminds (the three episode titles). One of the top searches related to the show is 'Is Secrets Of The Octopus real footage?' It is and it's otherworldly, like a high-def trip to outer space but you're in the ocean. The series strikes a nice balance between informative Paul Rudd narration, storytelling by scientists, and just letting you watch these cool creatures doing their thing. I felt compelled to take up snorkelling immediately, and had buzzy dreams afterwards. / Liv Sisson Kaleidoscope (NZ on Screen) If you want to see a few glimpses of good old Aotearoa in the 70s and 80s, look no further than this collection of eccentric little 90-minute documentaries. The title is fitting: all that holds it together is the 'arts' – all of them. There's profiles of artists like Francis Hodgkins and Rita Angus, a behind-the-scenes look of a film about the country's 'most controversial murder' and a handful of episodes about architecture. Other than the peep it gives us into the recent past, Kaleidoscope is charming for the way its subjects are somewhat candid and unsullied by a world where everything is content all the time. / Gabi Lardies Under the Tuscan Sun (Disney+) It's the season of new beginnings. Under the Tuscan Sun is a must watch for anyone going through a breakup or anyone looking to make changes in their life. Other than the fact we all want to vicariously buy a run-down villa in Italy and do it up, the movie is littered with loveable characters and the Gay and Away tour really sends it home. Uplifting. Lovely. Funny. A movie that could be described as a ray of sunshine. / GL Long Bright River (ThreeNow) Everyone is going on about Dept. Q but Long Bright River over on ThreeNow is way better. If you want a crime series written well and without unnecessary subplots and a predictable ending, then go for this excellent (if not pretty grim) series about a cop in Philadelphia who is struggling to cope with her sister's disappearance amid a spate of deaths. Amanda Seyfried is superb as troubled, solo mum who is sure that the deaths have more to do with murder than opioid overdoses. Well written, well acted, and nicely contained in a limited series. / Claire Mabey Code of Silence (TVNZ+) I've been on a crime binge recently (see above) and Code of Silence is one of the best I've watched. It stars Rose Ayling-Ellis who plays a Deaf woman recruited by the police to be a forensic lip reader. Ayling-Ellis (Deaf since birth) is absolutely riveting and the storyline is brilliant. For those after a good, solid crime story you can't get much better than this. / Claire Mabey

Iconic Auckland Eats 2025 Top 100 Dishes Revealed After Record Number Of Nominations
Food lovers in search of a quick bite or a special meal out in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland have a new source of inspiration, thanks to the release of the Iconic Auckland Eats 2025 list of Top 100 dishes. Presented by Tātaki Auckland Unlimited, on behalf of Auckland Council, Iconic Auckland Eats celebrates the diversity and quality of Auckland's food scene and its hospitality industry. Inclusion in the annual Top 100 list is driven by personal nomination stories submitted by the public about their favourite dishes. Any dish can be nominated to become an Iconic Auckland Eat, whether it's sold from a local bakery, market stall, food truck, café or fine-dining restaurant. Nominations are reviewed by judges to determine the Top 100 list. In 2025 Iconic Auckland Eats celebrates two milestones – its fifth anniversary and a record number of nominations. This year the public submitted 3109 nominations through the Iconic Auckland Eats website, an increase of 67 per cent from the 1857 nominations received in late 2023 for the Top 100 list announced in early 2024. 'Iconic Auckland Eats continues to grow as a celebration of Auckland's culinary scene,' says Tātaki Auckland Unlimited Director Destination, Annie Dundas. Tātaki Auckland Unlimited launched Iconic Auckland Eats in 2020 with the support of Restaurant Hub, New Zealand's largest online restaurant booking network. 'Food fans active on social media love to share content about dishes they love and learn about new ones to try. Our friends in hospitality have really embraced Iconic Auckland Eats and encourage their customers to nominate dishes. We have very passionate people in all parts of Auckland who want to share food stories from their region. It's been really nice to see how that's evolved in the past five years and helped to boost the success of hospitality businesses,' Dundas says. In 2025, there are 77 dishes new to the Iconic Auckland Eats Top 100 list, with 39 businesses debuting on the list. 'It's wonderful to see how Auckland's dining options offer such variety – this is reflected with the new additions to this year's list,' Dundas says. Of the 23 dishes returning to the Iconic Auckland Eats Top 100 list in 2025, only two have been on the list since its inception – lamingtons from Sugar at Chelsea Bay and Depot's fish sliders. Nominations are assessed by judges on a range of criteria: a dish that's well-loved, representative of local culture and people, a timeless classic, and/or a 'signature dish'. The list not only celebrates food, but also in-store experiences, people, history, heritage and culture. This year's judges were Annie Dundas, along with renowned food-industry figure and The Kitchen Project Manager, Connie Clarkson and Restaurant Hub co-owner, Mark Gregory. The Top 100 list is compiled from the judges' recommendations and an evaluation of nominators' stories about their favourite dishes. In a new initiative for 2025 there are five winning dish-nomination stories, instead of one story. In previous years the winning nominator won vouchers to eat all Top 100 dishes from the year's Iconic Auckland Eats list, but this year the five winning nominators will each receive $500 worth of vouchers to spend at their choice of Iconic Auckland Eats Top 100 list venues. Connie Clarkson says Iconic Auckland Eats shows off food offerings not just in the city centre, but in neighbourhoods across the region. 'Iconic Eats is a love letter from the food lovers of Auckland to the cooks, chefs and their whānau who step up to the plate to deliver the food that brings them joy every day. It transcends place, price, nations and neighbourhoods, complexity, simplicity and time. We are really lucky.' Mark Gregory says; 'For me, Auckland's restaurant scene is more than just a collection of great places to eat; it's a dynamic expression of the city's personality — inventive, confident, and increasingly global in outlook. The range of cuisines and styles in the Iconic Auckland Eats Top 100 list showcase the region's cultural diversity — where local influences sit alongside East Asian, Middle Eastern, and European traditions, often blended in uniquely Aotearoa ways.' Iconic Auckland Eats also provides an opportunity for visitors to Auckland to learn about the region by enjoying its food. 'We've seen Iconic Auckland Eats picked up internationally, whether it's from journalists coming here and writing about it or travel agents popping information into itineraries. It's nice to share the places that Aucklanders think of as great with visitors and each other,' Dundas says. Karen Thompson-Smith, Tātaki Auckland Unlimited Head of Tourism, says she is thrilled with Iconic Auckland Eats' building momentum. 'Food and beverage services are a vital part of Auckland's vibrancy and are a major contributor to the region's visitor economy. We know that trying local cuisine is a must-do activity for most visitors coming to New Zealand,' she says. In the year to March 2025, food and beverage services accounted for 17.4 per cent of domestic and international visitor spending in Auckland, according to Infometrics. Cooked over charcoal perfectly, and then that sauce. I could drink that sauce. I could bath in that over the perfectly cooked and seasoned steak. Just divine. Deluxe Pepperoni Pizza from Bari's Pizza – nominated by Simran Patel It combines halal pepperoni and bell peppers [capsicums] with delicious, hot honey. Out of all the halal pepperoni pizzas I've had around the world this has to be the best! Halal pepperoni is so hard to come across, so that's another reason why it deserves to win. Dumplings in Spicy Sauce from Eden Noodles – nominated by Karol Troncoso Every time I visit Eden Noodles; I watch the lady at the door making dumplings with such precision. Her care and skill make every bite perfect. These dumplings reflect Auckland's diverse food scene – handmade, flavourful, and crafted with passion. Risotto All'Anatra from Prego – nominated by Jodi Pretscherer It is like a creamy bowl of happiness. I can't eat this without having my 17-year-old and husband 'taxing' it. It's a must-have at this iconic restaurant. Spare Ribs Rice Noodles Soup from Vietnam Café – nominated by Joshua Jo This dish has been a favourite of mine since I was 10 years old. I'm nearly 40 now and nothing has changed, in the best way. The dish's flavour, quality, and presentation remain consistent, and I'll gladly drive from the other side of Auckland for it.
