Gun battle between illegal miners terrifies local residents
Residents living near Golden Drive and New Modder mining sites endured another night of fear on April 23 as a violent shootout erupted between rival gangs of illegal miners.
According to messages shared on a local community WhatsApp group, the gunfire began at around 17:30 and continued into the evening, sending families into panic as shots rang out just meters from their homes.
'It sounds like living in the Gaza Strip,' one resident wrote, comparing the intensity of the gunfire to a war zone.
Others echoed the sentiment, saying the noise was so loud it felt like bullets were flying outside their windows.
Local security company Hlasela Tactical responded to distress calls from residents at around 20:30, deploying three vehicles, including a large armoured vehicle to the scene.

Jacques Olivier of Hlasela Tactical said when they arrived, they saw illegal miners shooting recklessly from the mine dumps near homes in New Modder.
He said the violence stemmed from clashes between rival illegal mining gangs, believed to include Basotho nationals and other factions. They reportedly are fighting over control of recently sealed-off mining shafts after DMR, police and security forces shut down several illegal operations earlier this year as part of a government crackdown. Newly dug mine shafts have been reported.
'Various groups are clashing for control. We did not intervene in the gunfight but chased those shooting too close to the community,' said Olivier.
Residents encouraged each other to contact the Benoni SAPS during the incident but it is alleged that no police responded to the scene.
Olivier said they saw police vehicles in other areas and expressed concern over the SAPS's absence.
'The police are putting the public at risk by not showing up. These miners are not just shooting in the area, they are robbing people too. And this is all happening next to Benoni CBD,' he said.
Thanks to Hlasela Tactical's intervention, residents said the situation calmed down enough by late evening for them to get some sleep.
This is not the first time the community has raised concerns about the lack of response from local authorities.
In June 2023, Benoni City Times reported similar allegations after a business along Golden Drive complained of police inaction despite repeated calls for help.
An employee from the company, speaking anonymously, claimed police officers admitted to fearing the miners, citing the criminals' access to heavy weaponry and explosives.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Captain Nomsa Sekele refuted claims that police never arrived at the mining site.
'Police officers were deployed to the area after receiving complaints via the 10111 emergency number. They did not enter the mining site because it was too dark and dangerous.
'The SAPS Ekurhuleni District sent backup, including the Public Order Police (POP) Unit, K9 Unit, Flying Squad and crime prevention officers, who patrolled around the Van Ryn mining site.'
Sekele said they received no reports regarding the discovery of bodies of illegal miners following the shootout.
She reiterated the police are continuing efforts to curb illegal mining activities in Benoni through ongoing operations, including Operation Vala Mgodi.
The Golden Drive and New Modder sites have been a hotspot for illegal mining for years, because of their network of abandoned mineshafts.
In January, SAPS deputy district commissioner Brigadier Lebohang Machakela announced a partnership with the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy to seal off illegal shafts as part of Operation Vala Mgodi (Close the Holes).
The operation, launched on January 27, concluded in March, but residents say the violence has not stopped.
Residents are once again calling for urgent police intervention before more lives are lost or innocent residents get caught in the crossfire.

The Toti Community Assist (TCAI) member, Dalene Crawford, conceived the fundraiser to make people aware of the sterling work that Bobbi Bear conducts daily. 'I know the backlash they get when they ask for help. It was a very successful mass ride this year. I would love to raise awareness everywhere for Bobbi Bear because they do not get government funding,' Crawford said. Director at Bobbi Bear, Eureka Olivier, said the organisation has 12 children on the property in Amanzimtoti, which is also referred to as an emergency house. These children, she said, were rescued from homes where they were abused. Olivier said that because there is a shortage of funding, Bobbi Bear often has a critically low stock of basic food, including cereal, milk, and tinned food. 'We are grateful for fundraisers because they help us stock up on essentials. We also received clothes. It is heartwarming to see people going out of their way to assist us,' she said. Olivier stated that they are a rapid-response organisation for incidents of rape and abuse. The home in Amanzimtoti also has an additional cost of paying caregivers. 'We keep these abused children safe until they are ready to move out and reintegrate into society. Here, they live a normal life, attending school and participating in extra-curricular activities,' she said. 'We work from all over the province, including satellite stations and police stations. We also have qualified counsellors who interview the children.' Olivier said if a child was raped in their home, they could not take the child back, adding that Bobbi Bear is the only organisation in South Africa that works with a bear. A 'Bobbi Bear' is a non-threatening means (bear) for child victims of sexual abuse to communicate the nature of the abuse, crossing all language barriers and preventing secondary abuse at the point of rescue. It provides a better understanding of actual events and enables the initiation of appropriate HIV and Aids interventions. 'Our success rate is testament to our organisation's training programmes. We rescue and provide safe homes for abused children, work with the criminal justice system to prosecute perpetrators, educate individuals and communities, and much, much more,' she said. This came out after the Border Management Authority (BMA), along with the South African Police Service (SAPS) and Home Affairs, stepped up their game over the Easter holidays to try and stop people from entering the country illegally. Increase in illegal crossing BMA Commissioner Michael Masiapato recently briefed the media on the outcomes of the Easter operation. The operation spanned from 15 April to 24 April, and Masiapato revealed an 8% increase in travel over the period, with about one million movements recorded across all 71 ports of entry. He also revealed that authorities detained more than 6 000 individuals attempting to enter or exit South Africa illegally, a 61% increase compared to previous figures. According to BMA, Zimbabwean, Mozambican, and Basotho nationals remain the top three nationalities attempting to enter South Africa illegally. Zimbabweans had their numbers reach 2 019, according to the report. After them, the next biggest group was from Lesotho, with 1 921 individuals. BMA Easter operations: Zimbabwean nationals identified as leading individuals attempting to enter SA illegally

Masiapato also disclosed that authorities intercepted more than 6,000 individuals attempting to illegally enter or exit South Africa, a 61% increase compared to previous figures.
