A woman Naxalite was killed in an encounter with security personnel in Chhattisgarh's Kanker district on Friday morning, a police official said.
The gunfight broke out on a forested hill within the jurisdiction of Chhotebethiya police station when a joint team of
District Reserve Guard
(DRG) and
Border Security Force
(BSF) was out on an
anti-Naxal operation
, Kanker Superintendent of Police Indira Kalyan Elesela told PTI.
The operation was launched between Amatola and Kalpar villages based on inputs about the presence of the members of the banned Maoist organisation on the other side of the Kotri river, he said.

Woman arrested for her newborn's murder
Kottayam: To hide the birth of her child from family members, a 21-year-old woman killed her newborn in Mezhuveli, Pathanamthitta. On Friday, Elavumthitta police recorded the arrest of the woman from a private hospital in Chengannur where she was undergoing treatment for excessive bleeding. She was taken to police station where she was subjected to detailed interrogation, after which her arrest was recorded. Police said the woman, who is unmarried, killed the one-day-old baby in a remote area behind her house on Tuesday. Police said she committed the crime in order to hide the baby's birth from her family. Even though her family members resided in the house where the incident took place, she managed to hide the matter from others, police said. After the autopsy was conducted at the govt medical college hospital in Kottayam, the infant's body was handed over to the woman's family. According to the district police chief, the cause of death was head injury, and the forensic surgeon will be visiting the crime spot next week. The surgeon will inspect how the wound on the head was inflicted and will hand over the report to police. She gave birth to the child, which she conceived with her partner, inside the house while her family was unaware of her pregnancy. She also cut the umbilical cord and covered the baby's mouth with her hand to muffle its cries. When she started bleeding, the woman approached the hospital where doctors enquired about the baby. London's Metropolitan Police said a man had been taken into custody after he was arrested on suspicion of breaching conditions temporarily banning protest gatherings in the area until Sunday. 'Seven other men remain in police custody after being arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm,' the police said in a statement. Local media reported the arrests took place at a protest against the Iranian leadership. Police did not link the arrests to the Iranian embassy, but said they took place on Prince's Gate in London, which is where the embassy is located. 'Two men were treated for injuries at the scene and have been taken to hospital for further treatment by the London Ambulance Service,' the police said in an earlier statement.
