Birmingham bin workers begin indefinite all-out strike

BBC News11-03-2025

An indefinite all-out strike for refuse workers in Birmingham has commenced. The action officially started at 06:00 GMT on Tuesday, however, collectors have been striking on and off since January following plans to downgrade some staff and reduce their pay.Mahmoud Barreh, 58, lives in Balsall Heath and has not had his bin collected for three weeks, he said: "People are really worried, we pay high charges of council tax, which is going to rise in April, and feel Birmingham City Council is not doing their duty."Craig Cooper, from the authority said a "fair and reasonable consultation had been under way since last autumn".
Mr Cooper, who is the strategic director of city operations, added that the authority was "keen to have a proper dialogue on how we transform this service", but criticised the Unite Union for "only wanting to talk about the Grade 3 role" which the authority wish to cut.Speaking from a picket line in Tyseley, Zoe Mayou from the union said the action had been escalated as the authority "aren't willing to come to the table and have proper negotiations about the whole structure of the team... so this is where we are". Mr Barreh said Balsall Heath was affected by bin strikes in 2017, however, the situation was "already far worse" than his previous experience. "It's already started to smell, long before today, it's a risk to health and we are very worried that the industrial action is now indefinite."

Also on Wednesday, Washington doubled its tariffs on steel and aluminium imports, applying to all trading partners except Britain, which remains the only country to have struck a preliminary trade agreement. The U.S. and China are also expected to talk sometime this week to iron out trade differences. Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's office said on Tuesday, the government is engaged in "intensive and live" negotiations to get exempted from newly announced additional U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum, as well as other import duties imposed by the Trump administration. The BoC is set to announce its rate decision at 9:45 am ET and is expected to hold interest rates at 2.75%. In commodities, oil prices held steady, while gold and copper prices edged higher. Sterling edges up, UK avoids higher US metals tariffs

June 4 (Reuters) - Sterling firmed against the dollar on Wednesday, as investors were relieved the United Kingdom was not in the crosshairs of U.S. President Donald Trump's latest tariff escalation, while upbeat economic data also buoyed sentiment. The U.S. doubled duties on steel and aluminium imports to 50% but exempted the UK. Analysts were sceptical, however, about what room there might be to do away with the existing 25% duties through the agreement signed last month. "UK steel exports were supposed to incur no tariff, so Trump's abrupt change may cause UK negotiators to question the value of 'agreements' made," said Paul Donovan, chief economist at UBS Global Wealth Management. The mood among global investors was one of caution ahead of an anticipated call between Trump and his Chinese counterpart which could determine where the world's two largest economies stand with regard to trade relations. Wednesday is also the deadline the Trump administration has given its trade partners to offer their best deals to avoid steep levies on goods imported into the U.S.. The pound firmed 0.12% and was last at $1.353, while against the euro it was last flat and bought 84.11 pence by 0947 GMT. Sterling has outperformed the greenback alongside its developed market peers, including the euro and Swiss franc , as Trump's erratic policies have encouraged investors to look outside the U.S. for opportunities and the UK is perceived to be better insulated from trade uncertainty. Tuesday's gilt auctions also indicated strong investor demand for the country's longer-dated bonds, a stark contrast to similar sales in the U.S. and Japan last month. Still, investors will closely monitor how Finance Minister Rachel Reeves goes about funding the government's proposed infrastructure plans. Yields on 30-year and 40-year gilts were up about 2 basis points each on Wednesday. Meanwhile, a survey showed Britain's services sector returned to tepid growth last month, with the Bank of England expecting deteriorating business confidence as a consequence of global uncertainty to weigh on growth in the coming months. Traders are pricing in that the central bank will lower borrowing costs by about 37 basis points by the end of this year, according to data compiled by LSEG.
