ROME (AP) — Tens of thousands of demonstrators marched through the streets of Rome on Saturday against the war in Gaza in a protest called by Italy's main opposition parties, who accuse the right-wing government of being too silent.
Protesters held a banner reading 'Stop the massacre, stop complicity!' at the start of the march, which moved peacefully through the center of Rome amid a massive display of rainbow, Palestinian and political party flags.

A prominent Colombian senator is shot and wounded at a Bogota campaign rally

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — Colombian Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay, a possible candidate in the country's presidential election next year, was shot and wounded at a campaign rally in Bogota on Saturday, authorities said. His conservative Democratic Center party released a statement calling it an 'an unacceptable act of violence.' The attack took place in a park in the Fontibon neighborhood when armed assailants shot him from behind, his party said. Images circulating on social media showed Uribe Turbay covered in blood, apparently with a head wound, being held by several people. So far, no official report has been released on the senator's condition. The suspected shooter has been captured, Bogotá Mayor Carlos Galán said on the social platform X. But the federal government said it was offering a reward for the capture of those responsible. Uribe Turbay is a right-wing senator and the son of a journalist who was kidnapped and killed during one of the most violent periods in the country, which has been ravaged by a drug war. He is considered a possible presidential candidate in Colombia's election in May 2026.

TDSB blocks some trips, film screenings related to Israel-Palestine as parents accuse board of double standard

The Toronto District School Board will not allow any school trips to an exhibit on the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks on Israel or screenings of an Oscar-winning documentary about the Israeli-occupied West Bank as a school has come under fire for an alleged double standard on what activities it approves by parents and community members. The decision comes as more than 230 frustrated parents and community members issued an open letter Monday to their local trustee over the blocking of a student-organized screening of 'No Other Land,' a documentary by Israeli and Palestinian filmmakers on the destruction of a Palestinian community in the occupied West Bank.

Small sport stirs up controversy in Spain as Basque Country makes its international debut

MADRID (AP) — A small sport popular in Spain's northern Basque Country has stirred up a political controversy that triggered court action and fanned the region's long-held feelings of nationalism. There has been back-and-forth spats between sports officials and politicians after the Basque Country region was allowed to compete as a nation in international competitions in pelota vasca, a sport that was in the Olympics more than 100 years ago but is now rarely seen in most parts of the world.
