Man ‘killed' while transporting cattle in MP, police probe family claims of cow vigilante link
Police have filed an FIR under charges of murder after a 35-year-old dairy operator, Junaid Qureshi, died on Monday night, allegedly after sustaining injuries during a late-night confrontation over transporting cattle in Madhya Pradesh's Raisen district. The man's family claims he was assaulted by cow vigilantes.
Qureshi, who operated a dairy business in Bhopal's Jinsi area, died at Hamidia Hospital. His companion, Armaan from Shyampur, is critical.
Police have filed an FIR against multiple individuals and made at least three arrests, a senior officer stated, but did not disclose further details.
The alleged incident occurred when Qureshi and Armaan were transporting seven cows and one bull in a pickup truck near Mehargaon village. Family members allege that 20-25 men stopped their vehicle between Sanchi and Raisen and subjected both men to hours of beating throughout the night.
'He was transporting the cows for dairy. The men stopped them in Megaon and beat them through the night,' Mohammad Maj Qureshi, a family member, alleged.
The family also claimed the attackers looted approximately Rs 2 lakh from them.
Simultaneously, police have filed a separate FIR against Qureshi, based on a complaint by a Raisen-based bike workshop owner, under sections of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and the Madhya Pradesh Prohibition of Slaughter of Cows Act.
The complainant claimed that he and three others intercepted Qureshi's vehicle based on a tip-off about cattle smuggling from the Rahatgarh area.
He claimed the group found the cattle 'cruelly crammed' into the vehicle, bound for slaughterhouses in Bhopal. He claimed that when questioned about the cattle transport, Qureshi and Armaan 'provided no satisfactory answers and attempted to escape from the vehicle' and 'sustained injuries when they fell while running.'
The rescued cattle have been moved to Vitthal Bhai's Gaushala in Vidisha.

Power theft case: Sambhal MP deposits Rs 6 lakh
Sambhal: Samajwadi Party's Lok Sabha MP from Sambhal, Ziaur Rahman Barq, has deposited Rs 6 lakh with the electricity department following an Allahabad High Court order in an electricity theft case registered against him, officials here said on Tuesday. They also confirmed that the electricity supply to his residence will be restored later in the day. The case dates back to December 2023, when the electricity department installed a smart meter at the MP's residence on December 17. A load inspection was conducted on December 19, during which the department accused the MP of power theft. Subsequently, a penalty of Rs 1.91 crore was imposed on him. Despite being given multiple opportunities by the department to present his case, the MP challenged the penalty in court. On June 3, the Allahabad High Court directed that electricity supply be restored upon the MP depositing Rs 6 lakh with the department. Complying with the directive, the MP's counsel, Farid Ahmed, visited the local electricity office on Monday and submitted a demand draft for Rs 6 lakh. Speaking to reporters on Monday, Ahmed said, 'As per the High Court's instructions, we have deposited Rs 6 lakh with the electricity department today. We have also submitted a formal request to restore the power connection. The matter is now listed for further hearing in the High Court on July 2.' Naveen Gautam, Executive Engineer, Electricity Department, Sambhal, said, 'A power theft inspection was conducted at the MP's premises in December. He had filed a petition in court, and on June 3, the court ordered that electricity be restored upon depositing Rs 6 lakh. In line with that directive, the draft has been submitted. The MP's electricity connection will be reinstated today.' The case remains under judicial consideration, with the next hearing scheduled in the High Court on July 2.
