‘South Korea is back in the game': Lee debuts on global stage at G7 summit

South Korean President
Lee Jae-myung 's attendance at the Group of Seven summit signals that the country is 'back in the game', according to analysts, as the move allows Seoul to press ahead with its long-term goal of becoming a member of an expanded G7.
Sworn in as his country's new president last Wednesday, Lee would attend the three-day
G7 summit to be held in
Canada from Sunday, the presidential office said on Saturday.
This would mark his first overseas trip since he took office and his debut on the global diplomatic stage, following his election earlier this month, brought on by the impeachment of former president
Yoon Suk-yeol
Yoon was impeached by the National Assembly after declaring
martial law in December. The constitutional court upheld the verdict in a unanimous decision in April, removing him from office.
South Korea is not a G7 member state but had been invited to the expanded G7 sessions in 2021 and 2023, when Britain and Japan were the respective hosts.

Canada to mine more amid geopolitical tensions: former minister Bill Morneau

Canada's new government will invest more in mining at a time when the country's economy and manufacturing sector are facing 'challenges' related to China's curbs on rare earth exports, Bill Morneau, former Canadian finance minister, told the Post. 'One of the challenges for Canada is that we will need to increase our own mining,' Morneau, who was in office between 2015 and 2020 under then-prime minister Justin Trudeau, said in Shanghai on Friday. 'The initiative by new [Prime Minister] Mark Carney is to advance the ability to get big projects done. Certainly, mining is one of the critical ones,' Morneau explained. The former official acknowledged how Canada had taken some flak – collateral damage – amid US-China trade war escalations. Canadian firms, he said, have been affected by China's export restrictions on critical minerals that are still reverberating through the global industrial chain. 'Canada has a very significant part to play in the North American automotive sector. Any challenges around rare earths have an impact on that sector and, therefore, on Canada,' he said. 'So, there is a stake in that discussion for Canada. It's one of the important reasons that we hope these things get resolved.' Canada is sitting on a reserve of 15.2 million tonnes of rare earth oxide, according to a 2023 official estimate. Its reserves include both light and heavy rare earth elements, with key projects in Quebec and Labrador.

Canada's Sikhs, outraged by Modi G7 invitation, plan to protest

Members of Canada's Sikh community who were warned by police that the`ir lives were at risk and allege the Indian government is responsible for the threat are incensed by Ottawa's invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the G7 summit in Alberta. Advertisement Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney invited Modi, although India is not a member of the group of seven economies, to attend the summit that starts on Sunday as a guest. It will be Modi's first visit to Canada in a decade and a diplomatic test for Carney, a political neophyte. Canada's relationship with India has been tense since former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in 2023 accused India's government of involvement in the June 18, 2023, murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Sikh separatist leader in Canada. Modi's government has denied involvement in Nijjar's killing and has accused Canada of providing a safe haven for Sikh separatists. ''Outrage' is the kind of term that I've heard from people,' Sikh activist Moninder Singh, a friend of Nijjar, said of the invitation. He and other Sikh leaders plan to hold a protest in Ottawa on Saturday. Carney, locked in a trade war with the United States, is trying to shore up alliances elsewhere and diversify Canada's exports. Carney told reporters he invited India due to its importance in global supply chains. Xi urges Communist Party to learn from pioneer of China's economic planning

Chinese President Xi Jinping urged the ruling Communist Party to learn from the legacy of early party figure Chen Yun – a pioneer of China's economic planning – in remarks on Friday to commemorate the 120th anniversary of the late statesman's birth. Advertisement Xi called on the party to have unwavering confidence when facing 'chaotic and complex turbulence', and to strengthen its ability to cut a path for China's economy with 'objective and thorough' research, according to state news agency Xinhua. The party is preparing for an annual conclave, to be held later this year, focusing on the next five-year plan covering 2026–2030 . The national economic development plan will serve as a blueprint to sharpen China's competitive edge and address weak links exposed in its rivalry with the United States. Xi made the remarks at a meeting in Beijing to mark the anniversary of Chen's birth in 1905. China's ruling party typically commemorates the birthdays of revolutionary elders every 10 years. Modern leaders often weave their policy priorities into their commemoration speeches as a way to rally the party and draw inspiration from the elder statesman's political legacy. Advertisement
