Dunkirk edges Saving Private Ryan as the UK's favourite Second World War film
Dunkirk has beaten films such as The Great Escape to be voted the UK's favourite Second World War film.
The 2017 movie also pipped films such as The Dam Busters (1955), Pearl Harbour (2001) and Bridge On The River Kwai (1957) in the poll by Deltapoll for the War Movie Theatre podcast, which covers both old and new war films.
The Christopher Nolan-directed film starring singer Harry Styles, Cillian Murphy and Barry Keoghan depicts the Dunkirk evacuation which took place in 1940 and saw more than 330,000 allied soldiers evacuated from the French harbour.
Saving Private Ryan (1998), which is directed by Steven Spielberg and follows the search for the titular character during the Normandy invasion, came second in the poll, followed by 1963's The Great Escape, which sees a group of allied prisoners attempt to escape a Nazi camp, in third.
The Dam Busters, which depicts the true story of the RAF's Operation Chastise, finished fourth in the poll, while the Battle Of Britain (1969), which is a dramatisation of the battle between the RAF and the German Luftwaffe, came in fifth.
The rest of the top 10 was made up of The Longest Day (1962), A Bridge Too Far (1977), Pearl Harbour, Schindler's List (1993), and The Bridge On The River Kwai.
Journalist and author Robert Hutton, co-host of the War Movie Theatre podcast, said of the poll: 'Cinema has always been looking for great stories, and war provides everything, heroism, moral conflict, adventure, romance.
'Even as the Second World War was being fought, it was inspiring some of the greatest films of the last century, such as In Which We Serve or Went The Day Well?, which deliver moments of human drama and comedy as well as action.
'Afterwards, it became a way for us to tell ourselves stories about what had happened, and then a generation later, with Saving Private Ryan, it became a way to commemorate.
'It's not surprising that Dunkirk is top of the list, it's the most successful war movie of the last decade. But it's noteworthy that half the list is from the golden era of war movies in the 50s and 60s. Four of them were made within eight years of each other.
'I'm a little sad that John Mills, who seemed to be permanently in uniform on Sunday afternoon TV in my childhood, doesn't get a film in this list.
'And I'd have liked to see at least one of the great Alistair MacLean commando movies, Where Eagles Dare or The Guns Of Navarone, in there. But mainly I'm appalled to see Pearl Harbour on the list, which ought to be a war crime.'
It comes after Europe commemorated the 80th anniversary of Victory In Europe (VE) Day on Thursday, May 8, which marks the end of the Second World War on the continent in 1945.
War Movie Theatre is a podcast hosted by Hutton and fellow journalist Duncan Weldon and is available from Acast and a number of other streaming platforms.

Oh, and BTW, guess who was allegedly a Nazi informant? Coco Chanel. During World War II, Coco Chanel was named as a Nazi informant by friend Vera Bate (who herself confessed to being a German agent). The French government arrested Chanel, who had several ties with Nazi intelligence organization Abwehr and its members. Chanel was eventually released due to a lack of evidence and possible help from friend Winston Churchill. Chanel's Nazi ties remained hidden for decades, though her "fear and hatred for Jews" was allegedly "notorious." Lucille Ball once claimed that she picked up Morse code during WWII through her lead teeth fillings. While driving home (and having previously experienced picking up music through her teeth), she began to hear a "de-de-de-de" sound. "As soon as it started fading, I stopped the car and then started backing up until it was coming in full strength. DE-DE-DE-DE-DE-DE DE-DE-DE-DE! I tell you, I got the hell out of there real quick. Steve McQueen came very close to being killed by the Manson family along with Sharon Tate, Jay Sebring, Wojciech Frykowski, Abigail Folger, and Steven Parent. He had been invited to Tate's house that night, and the only reason he didn't go, according to his then-wife Neile Adams, was that he 'ran into a chickie and decided to go off with her instead." According to a biography of McQueen, he had been having an affair with a blonde woman at the time, and even invited her to come to Tate's with him. However, she said "she had a better idea for just the two of them." McQueen, unlike Tate,* was on a list of targets for the Manson family. His death was planned to look like a suicide. Tate and her friends weren't specifically targeted, according to prosecutors — she just happened to live in the house once owned by music producer Terry Melcher, who had rejected proposals to make a record with Manson. Speaking of serial killer Charles Manson — he was friendly with a number of big players in Hollywood, including Dennis Wilson and Mike Love, the co-founders of the Beach Boys. Wilson later allegedly told Love that he'd seen Manson murder a Black man (though this is contested), causing Wilson to break off the friendship. Marilyn Monroe's last known words were to actor Peter Lawford, who was a brother-in-law to Robert and John F. Kennedy, as he had married their sister, Pat Kennedy. He stated she ended the call with, "Say goodbye to Pat, say goodbye to Jack, and say goodbye to yourself, because you're a nice guy." The Jack in reference was then-President JFK. This is noteworthy because there were longstanding rumors of an affair between JFK and Monroe, as well as Robert F. Kennedy and Monroe. There are also rumors that Robert F. Kennedy visited her that night, though this was denied by the Kennedys. Her housekeeper, Eunice Murray, who was there all day and night and was the one to find her dead, later claimed Robert had visited and they'd fought. Lawford later claimed that he'd heard about her death at 1:30 a.m. The wife of Monroe's press relations manager Arthur Jacobs also later claimed that her husband had received the call that Marilyn was dead at 10:30. Natalie Wood, who starred in a number of films including West Side Story, Rebel Without a Cause, and Gypsy, also died under extremely mysterious circumstances. The 43-year-old was with her husband Robert Wagner on his boat on a weekend vacation from filming Brainstorm when she drowned. According to Wagner himself (though he initially denied this), he and Wood argued, and then he went to bed without her. The next morning, her body was found a mile away. Wood had been drinking, and it's possible her death was an accident, but she was found with bruises that could mean she was attacked. Nearby witnesses had heard a woman scream. The captain of the boat, Dennis Davern, allegedly drunkenly confessed to Wood's sister years later that he'd seen Wagner push Wood, who then fell overboard, and that Wagner refused to rescue this is unconfirmed. Wagner has denied he had anything to do with Wood's death. But I mention this one specifically for a wild Hollywood fact that not many people seem to know — Christopher Walken, Wood's Brainstorm costar, had also been on the boat that night. He had reportedly also argued with Wagner, and Wagner was (according to Davern) angry Natalie had invited him. Walken has not said much about the night beyond affirming it was an accident and that he had nothing to do with it. "I don't know what happened. She slipped and fell in the water. I was in bed then. It was a terrible thing." He also said, "The people who are convinced that there was something more to it than what came out in the investigation will never be satisfied with the truth. Because the truth is, there is nothing more to it." One of the wildest Hollywood secrets involves Loretta Young and Clark Gable. For years, there were rumors Young's adopted daughter Judy was actually her biological daughter, conceived with Clake Gable. The rumors wouldn't be proven true until Young admitted to them in her posthumous memoirs. It turned out Young had conducted an elaborate cover-up to make it seem like she had adopted the child. Loretta even reportedly had Judy's ears pinned back in an operation because they so resembled Gable's. Gable never had any role in her daughter Judy's life. Young refused to tell Judy the truth, and according to Judy's memoir, when Judy confronted her about the rumors, Young ran into the house and Young never spoke publicly about the circumstances of Judy's conception, according to her daughter-in-law, Linda Lewis, in the '90s, Young had asked her what date rape meant after hearing the term on Larry King Live. After Lewis explained, Young replied, "That's what happened between me and Clark.' Operation Titanic: How the SAS and hundreds of fake paratroopers tricked the Nazis on D-Day
On the night of June 5, 1944, as tens of thousands of Allied troops prepared to storm the beaches of Normandy, a handful of British Special Air Service commandos were parachuting into Nazi-occupied France alongside hundreds of straw-stuffed burlap dummies. This was Operation Titanic, one of the more absurd operations of the war. Yet Titanic, along with other deceptions, tricked the German high command into believing the real invasion of 'Fortress Europe' was happening somewhere else or not at all. To pull it off, the British dropped hundreds of fake paratroopers nicknamed 'Rupert' across four locations far from the actual landing zones of the real airborne forces arriving later in the night. These dummies were rigged with pyrotechnics to simulate rifle fire and movement, and SAS teams on the ground used loudspeakers to play recordings of shouted commands and gunfire. The intent was to make the invasion appear much larger and spread across a wider area than it really was, and it was successful. In the dark chaos of the early morning, it was just convincing enough to send German forces scrambling. Fearing massive airdrops that threatened to encircle them, German commanders diverted troops and armor that might have otherwise reinforced Normandy's lightly armed coastal defenses and driven the Allies back across the English Channel. Fearing the 'Rupert' hordes, elements of the 12th SS Panzer Division, one of the more formidable units near the beaches, went on a ghost hunt to chase the phantom paratroopers instead of reinforcing the beaches. The deception bought precious time for American, British, and Canadian troops, and helped ensure the beachheads held. Operation Titanic wasn't a standalone trick; it was part of a massive, multi-layered deception effort called Operation Bodyguard, which also included fake radio traffic, double agents, and even the creation of a fictional army led by General George S. Patton. It was weird, risky, and not without casualties among the commandos sent to pull it off. But it worked. And it's a reminder that sometimes, the most effective weapon on the battlefield isn't a bomb. It's a lie. Jurassic World Evolution 3 Trailer Leaks And Reveals Fan-Requested Baby Dinos
Jurassic World Evolution 3 is real and launching later this year, according to a newly leaked trailer which also reveals that baby dinosaurs and more fan-requested features are arriving in the anticipated prehistoric theme park simulator sequel. On June 6, Jurassic Addict on Twitter spotted and shared images and details from what appears to be a story that accidentally went live on German gaming site GameStar. The story leaked that Jurassic World Evolution 3 will be launching on October 21, 2025, on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Oddly, no Switch 2 port. The upcoming game is likely to be officially revealed during Summer Game Fest. Also included in the leaked story was a trailer which has since been pulled from GameStar's site but has already been uploaded to many places online by fans. Still, this trailer provides us with our first look at baby dinos, a highly requested feature that wasn't in the first two Jurassic World Evolution games. Jurassic World fans are already digging through the low-quality trailer to spot new features and additions. As mentioned already, baby dinos are now a part of the game. But fans have also spotted improved and advanced terrain tools, new vehicles to drive around in, more customization options, new behaviors, the ability for flying dinosaurs to walk around on the ground, and new ways to tweak your genetically altered dinosaurs before they hatch. As a big fan of Frontier Development's Jurassic World Evolution 2 (and its predecessor), I'm excited that we're getting a new game later this year, and just a few months after Jurassic World Rebirth hits theaters in July.
