Fake plates, duty-free booze: Man held in JB raid

JOHOR BARU: A man allegedly running a solo operation to store and distribute untaxed alcoholic beverages was arrested during a police raid at a house in Taman Mount Austin last Wednesday.
Johor Baru (South) police chief Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat said the 10.30am raid was conducted with the Bukit Aman Federal Reserve Unit intelligence division, resulting in the seizure of over 185 cartons of canned beers worth RM316,595.87.
Police also confiscated two luxury multipurpose vehicles (MPV) valued at RM195,000.
Both vehicles were fitted with fake registration plates, believed to be used to evade detection.
"Initial investigations revealed the suspect had been operating for six months, sourcing duty-free alcohol from Forest City in Iskandar Puteri and reselling it to retail outlets and customers around the state capital," he said at a press conference today.
Raub said the rented RM3,000-per-month property was used as a storage facility, while the MPVs served as transport and cover for deliveries.
The suspect tested negative for drugs and has no prior criminal record.
He said the suspect sold the beers at market prices, despite sourcing it from tax-free outlets in Forest City.
The duty-free outlets there sold untaxed beer cans at RM6, however the suspect resold them at RM12.
He was remanded for 14 days until May 21. Samples of the seized alcohol were sent to the Chemistry Department and Customs for analysis.
The case is investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967 for possessing prohibited goods without approval and Section 108(3)(f) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for using false number plates.

PJ police unleash drones to crack down on motorcycle lane violations

PETALING JAYA: Errant motorcycle riders beware, as PJ police are using drones for the first time, looking out for riders who did not use the designated motorcycle lanes along the Federal Highway. Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Shahrulnizam Ja'afar said the operation, which was conducted along KM28.4 of the highway on Wednesday (June 11), focused on reducing the number of accidents involving motorcyclists, especially fatal ones along the Federal Highway. "We are cooperating with the Police Air Unit (PGU) for the operation by using drones. "Once the offender is spotted on the drone, they will be issued summonses on the spot. "For the few exceptions that might have escaped, we would have already recorded their registration numbers, and summonses will be sent directly to their homes," he told reporters during the operation on Wednesday. He urged motorcycle riders to use the designated lanes to lessen the risks of being involved in accidents and other hazards. "I understand riders do not prefer to use the lanes as they are less than desirable, as some parts of the motorcycle lanes could be dark at night, while if it rains, such areas might also be flooded. "Our operation is conducted during peak hours during the day, especially in the morning," he said. A total of 47 summonses were issued for various offences, he said. "Some 16 offences were detected using drones," he said. Within 30 minutes, 32 summonses were issued during the operation, he said. "Most of the summonses were issued to riders not using the designated motorcycle lanes under Section 79(2) of the Road Transport Act 1987," he said, adding that some 16km of the highway was under the jurisdiction of PJ police. He stated that the operation aimed to enforce laws and raise awareness among road users, particularly motorcyclists, about the importance of complying with traffic regulations. "We are focusing on motorcycle riders, as 70% of fatal accidents in the district involved them. "We will continue to conduct such operations using drones from time to time," he said.

59 cases of illegal durian farming in Pahang's forest reserves since 2019

Volunteers from 23 NGOs planted high-value timber trees in the Batu Talam Forest Reserve in Raub, after 15,000 illegally planted Musang King durian trees were discovered in the area. PETALING JAYA : The Pahang forestry department has carried out a total of 114 enforcement operations since 2019, involving 59 cases of encroachment on forest reserves for illegal durian farming. The department's director Zainuddin Jamaluddin said the 101 items seized from these forest areas included pickup trucks, motorcycles, and herbicide spraying equipment. He said the encroachments were detected through patrols, drones, and satellite surveillance, Berita Harian reported. 'Durian trees would be felled using chainsaws, regardless of the tree's size or the forest's location,' he said. 'This enforcement action is not cruel, even though many disagree with it. Before any operation is carried out, negotiations are held with the illegal farmers to give them a chance.' Offenders can be prosecuted under Sections 32, 47, and 50 of the National Forestry Act 1984, which carry penalties including imprisonment and fines. Zainuddin said that once the durian trees are cut down, the department's western zone silviculture office replants the area with high-value timber species such as meranti, merbau, perah, and keruing. According to him, the silviculture office and district enforcement agencies face various challenges, including the remote location of encroachment sites, fenced private land, and narrow, hazardous paths. 'Nonetheless, we continue our enforcement efforts to ensure that forest reserve encroachments do not persist. 'We will not compromise when it comes to forest reserve encroachments for illegal durian farming.' In 2021, the department cut down about 15,000 Musang King durian trees illegally planted across 101.17 hectares in the Batu Talam Forest Reserve in Raub. Around 20,000 trees, including merawan, meranti, balau, and keruing, were subsequently planted in the area. Last month, the department carried out enforcement operations against illegal durian farms in Sungai Ruan and Sungai Klau, Raub.
