Kashmir: Omar Abdullah govt to convene special cabinet meeting in Pahalgam today, over a month after terror attack
Kashmir: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah-led Jammu and Kashmir government will hold a special cabinet meeting in Pahalgam today, over a month after a terror attack in the hill station killed 26 people, mostly tourists. The move is intended to send a powerful message against terrorism and violence in the Union territory.
This will the the first time the cabinet meeting will be held outside the usual summer capital, Srinagar, or winter capital, Jammu, during the present Omar Abdullah-led National Conference (NC) government's tenure.
The aim is also to to show solidarity with the residents of the tourist town, which has experienced a sharp decline in tourist footfall since the deadly April 22 terror attack in the fabled Baisaran Valley of the hill station, 90 kms south of Srinagar.
Two weeks after the Pahalgam terror attack, India on 7 May conducted precision strikes on at least nine terror camps in Pakistan in what is now known as 'Operation Sindoor.' India and Pakistan indulged in four days of military action post Operation Sindoor. The two nations agreed on an understanding to halt militarry action on 10 May.
The agenda of the meeting is not known and it seems its more symbolic in its message, news agency PTI said. Omar Abdullah, during his first stint as the chief minister Jammu and Kashmir from 2009-14, had held cabinet meetings in remote areas like Gurez and Tangdhar of Kashmir regon and Rajouri and Poonch areas of Jammu region.
The decision to hold a special cabinet meeting comes two days after Abdullah proposed a dual approach to resuscitate Jammu and Kashmir tourism sector, Abdullah urged the Centre to mandate PSUs to hold meetings in Kashmir and to convene parliamentary committee meetings there.
The National Conference leader made this suggestion at the Governing Council meeting of the NITI Aayog held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi last week.

Communal strife: K'taka govt inaugurates Special Action Force unit in Mangaluru
Mangaluru (Karnataka): The Karnataka government has officially inaugurated a Special Action Force (SAF) unit, the Communal Violence Control Force, in Mangaluru, aimed at preventing communal strife and serial revenge killings in coastal Karnataka and Malnad (hilly) regions of the state, thereby ensuring law and order. State Home Minister G. Parameshwara inaugurated the unit on Friday at the District Police Parade Ground in Mangaluru. Several dignitaries and police officers attended the event. The Congress-led government created this special force following incidents of revenge killings, mob lynching, and a series of stabbing incidents in the Mangaluru region. These crimes threatened the law and order system in the communally sensitive Mangaluru district. The entire coastal region had become tense, and these incidents threatened to disrupt peace in the state. Speaking after inaugurating the Special Action Force, HM Parameshwara stated that the SAF is necessary in Mangaluru, Udupi, and Shivamogga districts. HM Parameshwara acknowledged that many might criticise this task force but emphasised that peace in Mangaluru district would translate into peace across the entire state. He urged the people of the district to cooperate with the work of this task force and also mentioned that, if necessary, this task force would be established across the entire state. This unit has been formed with the objective of conducting rapid operations in communally sensitive areas. A total of 248 police personnel have been deployed in this unit, and the team will be divided into three companies. Speaker U.T. Khader, who represents the Ullal Assembly seat in Mangaluru, District In-charge Minister of Mangaluru, Dinesh Gundu Rao, who also serves as the Health Minister, and other dignitaries were present. The Congress-led government in Karnataka has decided to launch the Communal Violence Control Force -- a specialised unit -- in a bid to curb and control communal strife resulting in a series of revenge killings in the state's Mangaluru, Udupi and Shivamogga districts. The government has also announced that the personnel serving in the Anti-Naxal Force (ANF) will be reassigned to the Communal Violence Control Force. The government order released on May 29 in this regard states, among the total available total 648 posts in the ANF, 248 officers and staff are shortlisted to establish the SAF. The order states: "The new SAF will have three companies and they will be established in Udupi, Shivamogga and Mangaluru districts. The functions and responsibilities of this force include establishing an Intelligence unit with a technical cell to monitor and collect information from the media, social media, and Intelligence sources regarding hate speech, provocative incidents, and communal-related activities. 'To create an alert system for potential communal violence through surveillance and human Intelligence; to undertake confidence-building measures through effective outreach and influence; to implement measures to identify and monitor radicalisation." The IGP of the zone will take the necessary steps to deploy Special Task Force officers/personnel during instances of communal riots, it says.

Delhi court to consider criminal defamation complaint against Sitharaman on June 26
New Delhi: A Delhi court on Thursday fixed June 26 for the consideration of a criminal defamation complaint lodged by Lipika Mitra, wife of former AAP MLA Somnath Bharti, against Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman . The complaint alleged that Sitharaman made defamatory, false and malicious statements about the couple's marriage at a press conference on May 17 last year. The court of additional chief judicial magistrate Paras Dalal adjourned the matter on the request of Sitharaman's counsel, who sought time to file a vakalatnama and to peruse a copy of the complaint. The court directed Mitra's side to provide a soft copy of the complaint and a link of the video of the allegedly defamatory interview. According to the complainant, Sitharaman's defamatory and false statements were aired widely by television news channels with the alleged objective of tarnishing Bharti's reputation and damaging his electoral prospects as the INDIA bloc candidate from the New Delhi parliamentary constituency. "The accused made these utterances with the sole intention of weakening his chances of winning and for causing immense mental anguish to him," Mitra said in her plea. She contended that the minister's remarks not only harmed her husband's public standing but also caused "irreparable mental agony" to her and their two minor children — a daughter and a son. The plea stated that Bharti, being an IIT Delhi alumnus with a global network, suffered reputational harm beyond India's borders. "The defamatory acts of the accused continue to cause enduring damage unless they are retracted or an apology is issued," the complaint stated. Mitra requested the court to take cognisance of the offences and summon Sitharaman for trial. She also sought an injunction restraining the minister from "publishing, circulating or distributing similar defamatory content" through any platform and doing the needful to get the content removed from all places. US pushes for June peace deal between Rwanda and Congo
(Corrects Fitrell's title in paragraph 2) KINSHASA (Reuters) -The United States is pressing for swift progress in peace negotiations between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), with a senior U.S. diplomat underscoring an 'extremely aggressive timeline' for a potential agreement as early as June or July. Troy Fitrell, the senior U.S. bureau official for Africa, said during an online conference this week that technical teams are working to move the process forward. 'This coming week, we do have technical teams here to try to get to the next stage,' Fitrell said. 'We've done these principles. Now we have been arguing about putting these principles into action. We are still shooting for a June or July peace agreement.' 'There is no sense fooling around on this. If we are going to do it, we do it now,' he added, emphasizing Washington's push to accelerate negotiations.
