Tiny endangered pupfish return to this lake east of Phoenix after a year's absence

Yahoo05-04-2025

After more than a year of waiting, Ayer Lake in Superior is once again home to hundreds of tiny endangered desert pupfish.
The Arizona Game and Fish Department released 450 pupfish into the lake on March 26, according to a news release. The lake — part of the Boyce Thompson Arboretum — was drained in 2023 for urgent dam repairs.
'The release of the pupfish into Ayer Lake was an experience I will not forget,' said Superior Mayor Mila Besich, who helped net and release some of the fish herself.
Arboretum staff had kept the lake's fish population safe in a greenhouse during the repairs, according to Boyce Thompson's Executive Director Kim Gray.
'They have been very happy and have even produced offspring,' Gray said in the release.

Those fish and their offspring joined others from refuge sites at Robbins Butte Wildlife Area and the Phoenix Zoo during the reintroduction. The reintroduction took place through an agreement among the arboretum, AZGFD, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which outlines a collaborative effort for protecting the fish.
Gray called the pupfish's return 'a moment of hope' for the species, which has seen its numbers decline dramatically in the wild over the past century.
Desert pupfish are small — usually under three inches long — and hardy. They can survive extreme temperatures, high salinity and low oxygen levels. Despite that resilience, they are listed as endangered in the United States, having vanished from most of their historical range after losing habitat and facing pressures from non-native fish like tilapia and mosquitofish.
Today, remnant populations survive in a handful of places in Arizona, California's Salton Sea region, and parts of Sonora, Mexico. In Arizona, a network of carefully managed refuge sites like Ayer Lake helps keep the pupfish going.
Brett Montgomery, AZGFD's specialist for topminnow and pupfish species, said Ayer Lake is especially well suited for pupfish because of its stable conditions and isolation from invasive species. AZGFD also plans to reintroduce Gila topminnow, another endangered species, to Ayer Lake once the pupfish have time to adjust.
'It's such a nice habitat where the fish will really have the chance to thrive,' Montgomery said in the release.
Pupfish help manage the lake's ecology by feeding on mosquito larvae and aquatic invertebrates, which can help reduce pest populations and control algae growth.

The arboretum works to maintain the lake as a suitable habitat for the endangered species.
'The arboretum has abundant wildlife and we actively curate our garden spaces to accommodate the various species that make their home here,' said Gray.
To keep that habitat intact, officials urged the public not to move fish in or out of Ayer Lake for any reason.
'Introducing a non-native species to this lake could mean we have to start this entire process over,' Montgomery said. 'It would wipe out years of work.'

Airfield falls silent to remember Old Sarum squadrons with key role in WWII

OLD Sarum Airfield fell silent on Tuesday morning (June 10) to commemorate specialist squadrons founded during the Second World War. Several Air Observation Post (AOP) squadrons were founded at the former RAF airfield in the early 1940s, including Squadron 653, which moved to Normandy in June 1944 and supported the Army in France and the Netherlands. During the war, AOP squadrons flew unarmed aircraft to spot enemy targets, radioing their locations to direct artillery fire. Veterans in the Air Observation Post Association were joined by past and present members of the AAC at the airfield on Tuesday to commemorate the formation of Squadron 653, 83 years on. The AAC flew an Apache helicopter to the airfield at 10am, and the ceremony began next to a memorial dedicated to AOP squadrons an hour later. Lieutenant General Sir Gary Coward, president of the Air Observation Post Association, served in the 653 in Germany in the early 1980s. During the ceremony, he said: 'We are here today to commemorate the formation of 653 Squadron in June 1942; one of 12 British Air OP squadrons created during the Second World War. During that conflict, 117 members of the Air OP made the supreme sacrifice. 'Their courage was recognised by the award of two DSOs (Distinguished Service Order), five MCs (Military Cross), 132 DFCs (Distinguished Flying Cross), a DFM (Distinguished Flying Medal) and a Military Medal. 'Eighty-three years on, we will remember them. 'A number of us here today serve, and have served, in 653 Squadron, continuing the proud traditions first laid down here at Old Sarum in 1942, in Normandy in 1944 and beyond.' An Apache helicopter landed on the grass airstrip at 10am (Image: Spencer Mulholland) He told the assembled crowd that his father-in-law had also served in the squadron in Normandy as a flight medic. He said: 'It took a while, and a few whiskeys, to draw these memories out of him in later life.' The service took place next to Hangar 3, a First World War structure that was badly damaged by a large fire in April. He also thanked the Boscombe Down Aviation Collection for supporting the event and his fellow members of the Air Observation Post Association committee. Attendees then enjoyed a tour of the aviation collection and a buffet lunch.

Charges filed after Lancaster County fire companies report items stolen from auctions

LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) — Two men were accused of stealing items that Lancaster County fire companies were putting up for sale during mud sale auctions, State Police say. During the local auctions, Bradley Gray, 42, of Kinzers, and Timothy Lang, 35, of Chester County, allegedly provided fake names to get bidding tickets and later stole the auction items, State Police at Lancaster said Thursday in court documents. Items were stolen from Gap Fire Company after an auction on March 22, and also from Robert Fulton Fire Company and Gordonville Fire Company, the complaint shows. According to the criminal complaint, Gray claimed Lang was the one who got buyer tickets using other names and then gave duplicates of them to Gray to bid at the auctions. The investigation began after Troopers were alerted by a member of the Gap Fire Company about tools, outdoor furniture, and building material being stolen. Troopers said the items were being stored across the street after the recent auction. An outdoor furniture set that was stolen from that auction was later found on Facebook Marketplace for sale. Dauphin County man allegedly drove onto closed road, struck foreman State Police said in the complaint that surveillance video captured the duo, and a third person, arriving in a truck and taking the items. State Police also eventually learned during the investigation that the truck was unloading items in the back of a property along N. Kinzer Road in Paradise Township. A search warrant was executed on a residence and a garage that was on an adjacent property where the truck was parked. Troopers said they found construction items that were reported stolen from the Gap auction, including the furniture set that was put up for sale on Facebook. What are mud sales in Pennsylvania? State Police say Gray was then taken to the barracks for questioning and allegedly admitted to his and Lang's role in the thefts from the auctions. Representatives of the other fire companies eventually came forward during the investigation and reported their items also being stolen during auctions. Court documents show the duo faces six felony charges of theft. Both of them are in Lancaster County Prison after they were arraigned in front of Magisterial District Judge Raymond Sheller, who set Gray's bail at $25,000 and Lang's bail at $50,000. They each have preliminary hearings scheduled for June 10. The third person seen on surveillance video with the duo during the theft of the Gap fire items has not been charged at this time.
