Brewer divides more than £30,000 in grants between lucky recipients
Family brewer Hall & Woodhouse has divided more than £30,000 in grants between 20 lucky recipients.
The grants, awarded at the annual Community Chest Awards, are part of a larger £60,000 fund dedicated to communities in the south.
This year, the fund is the largest donation made by Hall & Woodhouse through its Community Chest initiative since it began in 2002.
Mark Woodhouse, family director of Hall & Woodhouse, said: "We're delighted to deliver a record-breaking Community Chest fund to support the multitude of voluntary organisations we have in the south.

Among the beneficiaries, Routes to Roots received £3,000 to continue providing home-cooked lunches at its drop-in sessions in Poole.
Ups and Downs Southwest, a charity supporting children with Down's syndrome and their families, received £2,000 for a 12-week intensive support plan.
Another beneficiary, Helpful Hounds Assistance Dogs, received £1,000 to cover training costs and professional services to support its autism specialist dog trainer.

(WMBD) — American Legion Post 2 held its annual D-Day remembrance ceremony Friday, marking the 81 years since Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy, a turning point in World War II. The ceremony took place at 10 a.m. along the Peoria Riverfront next to the RiverPlex, where Legion members gathered to honor the bravery and sacrifice of those who took part in the largest amphibious invasion in history. On June 6, 1944, approximately 160,000 Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily fortified French coastline to confront Nazi Germany. The operation was supported by over 5,000 ships and 13,000 aircraft. By the end of the day, the Allies had established a critical foothold in continental Europe but at a steep cost. More than 4,700 Allied forces died that, about 2,000 of them being Americans. Gary Hall, the service officer for Post 2, delivered remarks during the ceremony, underscoring the importance of remembering those who served. 'These events right here — like for D-Day — we want people to never forget what a sacrifice, what payment was made in order to keep our freedom. All gave some and some gave all,' Hall said. Notably, no members of the public attended the ceremony this year. Hall expressed disappointment in the turnout but said he understands that many people had work obligations during the morning hours. The event was held at the Military Services Memorial Plaza, continuing a long-standing tradition by Post 2 to honor those who served and to remind future generations of the cost of freedom. Peninsula Regional 911 unveils new technology that allows callers to share real-time video and photos
YORKTOWN, Va. (WAVY) – New 911 technology on the Peninsula will help improve speed and response during emergency situations. Peninsula Regional 911 callers can now share real-time video and photos using Citizen Input. Dispatchers can send a link to callers that will allow them to voluntarily do so. Dispatcher Krystal Wilcox said it's been easy to adapt to the new technology in the three months they've been testing it out. 'It's an integrated solution, so it allows us to have it paired with our mapping system and our phone system. So, it's easy to maneuver when we answer 911, or even a non-emergency line,' Wilcox said. The director of the Peninsula Regional 911 Emergency Communications Center, Terry Hall, said the technology is not meant for every call they get. It would mainly be utilized for situations like fires or accidents to help give context during emergencies. 'We were kind of concerned that maybe the citizens would not want to use it, but I think we have probably done 30 to 40 of them, and everybody has been very well receptive, and it's really aided in our first responder responses,' Hall said. Hall added that they're also testing transcription and translation services, hoping to continue modernizing the technology they use to serve citizens. 'All the tools that you see around you, and all the consoles you see behind us are tools that the dispatchers can use to articulate the response, who to send, how to send. Family says North Texas man was killed by car driven by his best friend
The man who was critically injured in a hit-and-run accident May 30 in west Fort Worth has died, according to his family. Daniel Lester was a beloved brother and father, and his family is 'shattered by grief' at the unexpected loss, his sister Presley Lester said in a GoFundMe. Daniel Lester, 30, died June 1 in the intensive care unit at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital, according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office website. He was on life support following the accident, KDFW-TV reported, and his family chose to donate his organs. Officers were called to the hit-and-run crash at the intersection of Clifford Street and Western Trade Drive shortly after 11 p.m. They found Lester, who had been been struck by a car. Information from a witness helped officers find the suspect's vehicle, police said. Thirty-six-year-old David Hall was arrested Saturday and faces a charge of collision involving serious bodily injury, according to court records. Presley Lester told KDFW that Hall and her brother were best friends. Another friend who saw the accident told Daniel Lester's family that a truck narrowly missed hitting Daniel's car. Daniel got out of his car to confront the driver, and Hall was also at the scene. The driver of the truck fled, KDFW reported. Presley Lester said in a public Facebook post Monday that her family believes that Hall hit Daniel by accident, but he still needs to face consequences. 'While it is understandable that he was frightened and shaken, abandoning a 'best friend' in a life-threatening situation is inexcusable, regardless of the potential repercussions,' Presley Lester said in her post. Daniel Lester leaves behind two young sons, according to the GoFundMe. His family is raising money to help with his funeral expenses.
