Unlike LDL, which can often be managed through diet, lifestyle, and existing medications, Lp(a) has long resisted conventional treatment.
In a phase 2 clinical trial conducted by Eli Lilly, 141 participants received a 400 mg dose of the investigational drug. Another 69 individuals were administered a placebo. The results, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, presented that within weeks, recipients of the drug showed a dramatic 94% reduction in Lp(a) levels, an effect that lasted up to six months with no reported side effects.
'This is a very promising development," said Dr Nitish Chandra, Principal Director at Fortis Escorts Heart Institute in Delhi. Until now, no therapy has effectively targeted Lp(a). Even blood-thinning medications can't remove this cholesterol from arteries and because Lp(a) is largely inherited, patients often face lifelong risk without any means of intervention, he said.
Currently, individuals with severe cholesterol blockage – more than 75% arterial narrowing – typically require a stent implantation to reduce the threat of a cardiac event. Conventional medications fail to dissolve cholesterol once it has significantly accumulated in the arteries, making prevention and early detection the primary strategies for at-risk patients. That may now change.
The Eli Lilly trial is only the beginning. While the reduction in Lp(a) is clear, whether it translates into fewer heart attacks or strokes remains to be proven. A larger, more comprehensive clinical trial is already underway, aiming to determine the drug's impact on long-term cardiovascular outcomes. Results from that trial are expected soon.
Meanwhile, Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis is also in the race, developing a competing drug that requires monthly injections. Both treatments could potentially reshape the landscape of cardiac care, particularly for individuals with genetically elevated cholesterol who have, until now, had limited options.

Only clean-fuel buses, app-based cabs and e-commerce fleets to enter Delhi from 2026
New Delhi: The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) on Wednesday issued new directions that tighten emission norms for a wide range of vehicles entering Delhi, a city that suffers from high levels of air pollution. According to the World Air Quality Report 2024, published in March by IQAir, a Swiss air quality technology company, 13 of the world's top 20 most polluted cities are in India, with Byrnihat in Assam topping the list, followed by Delhi. From 1 November 2026, only buses running on BS-VI diesel, CNG, or electricity will be allowed into Delhi under service regimes such as contract carriage, school or institutional permits and All India Tourist Permits, as per a government notification issued by the ministry of environment, forest and climate change. The mandate will also apply to tourist buses and fleet vehicles operated by app-based cab companies and e-commerce companies. The enforcement for these entities will begin earlier—from 1 January 2026. The directions, however, will not apply to vehicles registered in Delhi. The CAQM said the move is necessary as the transport sector continues to be a major source of air pollution in the national capital and across NCR, with the problem becoming worse during winter months. Buses and commercial fleets running on older, more polluting fuels are among the biggest contributors to toxic emissions, it said. Delhi had already taken the lead on this front by notifying the Motor Vehicle Aggregator and Delivery Service Provider Scheme in 2023. CAQM has now urged other NCR states—Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan—to frame similar policies, especially targeting high vehicle-density cities such as Gurugram, Faridabad, Sonipat, Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad, where e-commerce and aggregator fleets are a major part of the daily traffic. ‘Isotopic study of dust particles undertaken to understand their impact on environment'

Excerpts: Bihar is ranked among one of the most polluted regions in the world. Why? Some pockets of Bihar are certainly considered hotspots of air pollution mainly due to the large concentration of dust particles in atmosphere, but due to the recent initiatives of the BSPCB, the position has improved considerably. Recently released World Air Quality Report, 2025, by Swiss firm IQAir has shown signs of improvement in several towns. Notably, Patna's position has improved significantly, dropping from 20th place in 2023 to 37th this year. What initiatives have been taken by the board to combat air pollution? Most recently, the board, in collaboration with National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), has undertaken an isotopic study of dust particles in the air to understand their sources, transport and impact on the environment. The NIO has already started collecting samples of dust particles from Patna region in the first phase. After collecting samples from different parts of the state, the work will focus on using isotopic ratios, particularly Sr and Nd isotopes, to trace the origins of the dust particles, especially those transported from river Ganga. Q. You are also making some studies in collaboration with the IITs? A. Earlier, last year, the board started the study of dust particles in three most polluted cities of the state, namely, Patna, Muzaffarpur and Gaya, in collaboration with the IITs. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The study will identify the "seasonal mass concentration level of PM2.5 and PM10 in ambient air" of the extended urban areas of the thee cities. PM 2.5 and PM 10 are minute particles present in the air, and exposure to these is harmful to health. Real-time source apportionment studies help identify factors, such as vehicles, dust, biomass burning, and emissions from industries, responsible for an increase in air pollution in an area. The study on dust particles of Patna region is likely to be completed this year. What about water pollution in the state? Jal-Jeevan-Hariyali scheme of the state has not only provided the people with drinking water supply but also enhanced the rate of groundwater recharge. About 1.85 lakh hectare area has benefited under eco-restoration scheme with focus on watershed development. Further, more than 3,500 ahar pynes (a traditional water management and irrigation system) will be restored under the fourth agricultural road map of the state. All these will result in the total groundwater reserve of 34.15 BCM, of which 30.95 BCM can be extracted. At present, only 14.1 BCM of groundwater is being extracted. Hence, there is no problem of groundwater pollution in 473 blocks of the state. Do you think groundwater is being misused in urban areas? As many areas of the state are water-surplus, people are in habit of misutilising this resource. But, its overexploitation can be checked by introducing water meter in the supply system. People will try to save water, if they have to pay for it.
