Film shot in Durham theatre nominated for national award
A film shot in a Durham theatre and directed by a Game of Thrones star has been nominated for a national award.
Rapunzel Red, directed by Ben Crompton and Alex Ayre, is in the running for the best dance film award at the 25th National Dance Awards.
The film, based on balletLORENT's production of Rapunzel After Dark, was shot at Gala Durham in 2024.
It stars actor Lesley Sharp, Doctor Who composer Murray Gold and eight dancers.
Liv Lorent, balletLORENT's artistic director, who also did the choreography for the film, said: "We're truly honoured to be shortlisted for this award alongside such exceptional work.
"Rapunzel Red was a deeply collaborative project, and it means a great deal to see it recognised in this way."
It is the only contender from the region and is up against pieces from the Royal Ballet and English National Ballet, as well as a film by Venezuelan director Javier de Frutos.
The winner will be announced at a ceremony at The Barbican Centre in London on June 9.
A 77-minute film, it is based on the fairy tale Rapunzel, but with a twist.
It was created with adult audiences in mind and explores themes of desire, love, and loss.
The film was shot over four days and captures intimate struggles that are missed on stage.
The film was selected by a panel of experts from the Critics' Circle, including dance reviewers from the major national newspapers.
It was chosen as one of five shortlisted entries from more than 30 nominations.

"It reflects the creativity, commitment, and talent that went into making Rapunzel Red, and we're thrilled to see it acknowledged by the National Dance Awards."

As the Beckham family feud rages on, one son just made a personal decision: report
Deep sigh. Romeo Beckham was single for a hot minute, and now has possibly moved on. David and Victoria' Beckham's middle son, 22, was just spotted with a gorgeous woman in Paris, days after reports he had split with Kim Turnbull. The latter relationship was apparently one of the catalysts for a feud currently simmering within the famous English family who lives in Miami part time. According to widespread media reports, Turnbull used to have a little something something with Romeo's older brother Brooklyn, 26. Despite being happily married to Nicola Peltz, the aspiring chef understandably didn't want to have to hang with the London-based DJ when the whole gang got together. OK, so Turnbull isn't the only cause of the alleged friction. We hear that Victoria and Peltz are not exactly besties, with problems dating back to the 'Transformers' star's 2022 wedding to the ex Spice Girl's eldest in Palm Beach. The fact that the socialite chose to wear Valentino apparently didn't sit well with her mother-in-law, a haute designer. Whatever caused the drama, and if it's still ongoing is unclear. But we do know Brooklyn recently covered up his 'Mama's Boy' chest tattoo with flowers. Ouch. Back to Romeo and his sitch: TMZ identifies his new ladyfriend as Caroline Daur, a German fitness influencer. According to her eponymous website, the 30-year-old is 'a successful self-made entrepreneur and actress' with over 4.6 million followers on Instagram. Time will tell if the Beckhams can heal from the all this tumult. Insiders tell UK's The Sun the soccer icon and former pop star are hoping they can all reunite to celebrate daughter Harper's 14th birthday, which falls on July 10. But another source threw cold water on that theory: 'It doesn't seem likely at the moment.'

Everything We Know So Far About HBO's Controversial New Harry Potter Series
HBO's forthcoming adaptation of the Harry Potter books has inspired discourse ever since it was first announced back in 2023—due in no small part to author and series producer J.K. Rowling's noted transphobia. But this spring, fans of the franchise recieved a few important casting updates. Arabella Stanton, Dominic McLaughlin, and Alastair Stout Photo: Courtesy of Aidan Monaghan/HBO In late May, it was announced that newcomer Dominic McLaughlin would take on the role of Harry Potter, while Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout would co-star as Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, respectively. 'After an extraordinary search led by casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann, we are delighted to announce we have found our Harry, Hermione, and Ron,' showrunner and executive producer Francesca Gardiner and executive producer and episodic director Mark Mylod—both known for their work on Succession—said in a statement. 'The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen. We would like to thank all the tens of thousands of children who auditioned. It's been a real pleasure to discover the plethora of young talent out there.' John Lithgow Janet McTeer Paapa Essiedu Key members of the adult cast were announced back in April, including John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape. On Monday, June 9, however, a whole new batch of actors joined the project, including Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, Leo Earley as Seamus Finnigan, Alessia Leoni as Parvati Patil, Sienna Moosah as Lavender Brown, Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley, Daniel Rigby as Vernon Dursley, and Bertie Carvel as Cornelius Fudge. The new series has been touted as 'a faithful adaptation' of Rowling's original material, and even amid the controversy surrounding it—what with Rowling apparently no longer on speaking terms with her original Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint), or Hermione (Emma Watson)—it's hard not to root for these actors to have as successful (and normal!) an experience as possible, entering one of history's biggest young-adult franchises ever.
