World Snooker Championship winner spent £500K winnings on one purchase
Kyren Wilson won the World Snooker Championship in 2024, pocketing a cool £500,000 in the process, and the former champion very quickly invested his winnings
Kyren Wilson claimed victory at the World Snooker Championship in 2024, edging out Jack Jones in the final with an 18-14 victory. And as he celebrated at The Crucible, he already knew exactly what he wanted to do with his £500,000 top prize.
Opting for a sensible investment over a lavish splurge, Wilson ploughed his entire winnings into a holiday home in Portugal, promising his family a permanent getaway spot to bask in sun and tranquillity. But the journey to financial security was a challenge for the Wilson clan.
There was a time when cash was tight, especially during the early days of Wilson's career. In a heartfelt recollection, he reflected on his modest upbringing.
He commented: "My dad has a fight on his hands every day with multiple sclerosis and that puts snooker into perspective. It's nothing compared to what he and my mum have to go through.
"She's been a loyal servant to Weetabix for 30-odd years on the packaging side of things. It's probably not the ideal thing she wanted for her life, but she knew it'd bring stability to our family.
"They re-mortgaged the house so I could go out and fulfil my dream. I spoil my children now, but I remind them it wasn't always like this. Everything seems like a bonus because you never had anything.
"I think that's been a key part of my success. I went in very hungry and humble. That's kept me down to earth and made me appreciate the value of money."
After landing the sport's biggest prize, Wilson's winnings shot up to £3million. He has since pocketed just shy of another £1m in the 2024-25 season alone.
Wilson's current triumphs are a far cry from his early days as an up-and-coming snooker star, when scrimping and saving was the norm for his family's travel plans. He reminisced about the lean times, saying, "We basically couldn't afford a hotel.
"If the tournament was somewhere where there was no other way but staying overnight, my mum used to bring a little grill so we could make bacon sandwiches in the morning because we couldn't afford the hotel breakfast."
In spite of a recent tight 10-9 loss to China's Lei Peifan in the opening round of defending his title, Wilson remains focused. He candidly shared his coping mechanism after facing big disappointments: "You can get a bit lost out there sometimes.
"You forget the most important reasons, if you like, but that gave me the fire in my belly to give my family a great life. I told Sophie (his wife), 'You bring our son up and I'll try and bring in the earnings,' and I've kicked on ever since then really.'
"It's been tough sometimes. I do feel like a bit of a part-time dad. You're always in a different city, country, airplane. When I close the door I can see it breaks the kids' hearts.
"I've been begged not to go, but hopefully when they're adults they'll know it was all for this."

For the majority of his two-decade career in the NFL, quarterback Aaron Rodgers was one of the most valuable players. But this offseason, when the 41-year-old was let go by one team, it was unclear who else would want him. The four-time NFL MVP and the league's oldest active player appeared to provide resolution to one of the most intriguing offseason storylines Thursday by agreeing to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers as a free agent, according to reports from the NFL Network and Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Rodgers intends to attend the team's minicamp next week, per the Post-Gazette. It is a union of two sides that need one another. Pittsburgh used both Justin Fields and Russell Wilson last season to moderate success but both options departed earlier this offseason. After a 4-2 record with Fields as the starter, Pittsburgh gave the starting job to Wilson, a Super Bowl champion more than a decade earlier while with Seattle, once the veteran recovered from an injury suffered during training camp. Wilson made an early splash with his ability to throw deep balls but couldn't sustain the offensive progress as the Steelers lost six of their last eight games and their season ended in the playoffs' first round. The Steelers have not won a playoff game since 2017. Rodgers needed a team that would believe he could look like his old self after two highly underwhelming seasons with the New York Jets. Rodgers tore the Achilles' tendon in his first game in 2023 and missed the rest of that season. The Jets cleaned house after going 5-12 last season, a reset that included informing Rodgers on Feb. 13 that he would no longer be a Jet. Rodgers was non-committal about his future as the final weeks of the season, and potentially his career, approached. 'I just need a break to refresh, put my feet in the sand and see where I'm at after that,' Rodgers said Jan. 1. Rodgers was also reportedly considering Minnesota and the New York Giants, but both had pivoted to other plans during the offseason as Rodgers' decision dragged on and he weighed whether he wanted to retire or play in 2025. When he still had not made a choice more than one month after free agency began in March, Rodgers said was "not holding anybody hostage" during an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show. "I've been straight-up with these teams from the start about where I was at, starting with the money thing," Rodgers said. "I told every single one of the teams I talked to it ain't about the money. I'll play for $10 (million). I never once said I need a multi-year deal." As part of his decision-making process, Rodgers had met with the Steelers in March. Rodgers ranks fifth in NFL history with 503 passing touchdowns and his 62,952 yards rank seventh. Few players in NFL history have reached the highs Rodgers has during a career that has not been without controversy. After sitting his first three seasons as a backup to Brett Favre in Green Bay, Rodgers became the Packers starter in 2008 and within three seasons had won a Super Bowl. Rodgers spent the next decade becoming one of the most-decorated quarterbacks in league history, winning NFL Most Valuable Player honors four times in 2011, 2014, 2020 and 2021; only Peyton Manning, with five, has won the award more times. At his peak Rodgers possessed the devastating combination of one of the league's strongest arms and pinpoint accuracy. Just 1.4% of his 8,245 career attempts have resulted in an interception, the lowest interception rate in NFL history. Rodgers even had an uncanny ability to connect on Hail Mary throws. His career quarterback rating, a formula created to judge overall quarterback success, also stands an all-time record. His most prolific season came in 2011, when Rodgers threw for 45 touchdowns — three off his single-season career-high from 2020 — against just six interceptions, while amassing a career-high 4,643 yards and averaging a career-high 9.2 yards per attempt. Ronnie O'Sullivan launches new career move ahead of quitting UK for 'new life'
Ronnie O'Sullivan has not played since his World Championship semi-final defeat to Zhao Xintong in May and has now confirmed his next career move by launching his own YouTube channel Ronnie O'Sullivan has revealed his latest venture - he's now a YouTuber. The seven-time World Snooker Championship winner barely featured competitively during the latter half of last season, having shattered his cue in frustration during the Championship League in January. He withdrew from the Masters, where he was set to defend his crown, as well as several other events, before eventually returning to competition at the World Championship - with a fresh cue. Although he reached the semi-finals, 'The Rocket' cut a frustrated figure, voicing concerns over both his performance and his equipment. In a drastic move, he had the tip and ferrule of his cue replaced mid-match during his last four clash with Zhao Xintong. Following a heavy 17-7 loss to the Chinese star, the snooker icon shared his intention to spend more time in the Middle East and become more selective with his participation in tournaments. He's now branched into a new endeavour he can pursue from anywhere - starting his own YouTube channel. Sharing a link to a video of his historic 1000th professional century, achieved during the 2019 Players Championship final, O'Sullivan took to X to announce his new venture. "Finally gone and got a YouTube channel," he wrote. "I will be uploading all sorts here from some of my favourite shots and matches to me cooking to me meeting and chatting to some interesting people. Hope you guys enjoy it!!" However, there is currently just one video on the channel - a clip of him achieving a 147 during a practice session in Saudi Arabia prior to the World Championship. The video showcasing the 1000th century appeared to have been taken down. Another said: "Good luck Ron, keep grafting & playing for as long as you can." A third joked: "Ronnie O'Sullivan cooking must be Fast Food!" After his elimination at the Crucible, O'Sullivan outlined his short-term plans, which include leaving the UK. "I think I'm going to be moving out of the UK this year. A new life somewhere else," the 49-year-old announced. "I'll still try and play snooker but I don't know what the future looks like for me really. I'm moving away soon so I'll just see how it goes. There's a lot of more important things in life to worry about than a game of snooker. "For me, it's a big part of my life, but I've got to try and figure out what my future looks like, whether it's playing or not. I'll be moving away to the Middle East but we'll see how it goes. I might be back in six months, who knows!"

Australian centre Harry Wilson makes early Dragons exit
The 24-year-old was a high-profile recruit from the Waratahs last summer but failed to settle at Rodney Parade in a struggling side. Wilson, son of former World Cup winner David, only showed glimpses of his potential and made just 12 appearances, five of them starts. The 6ft 3ins Aussie and the Dragons have agreed to cut their losses with a year still to run on his contract and he has returned Down Under. 'Grateful for all the experiences I've had over the past year,' Wilson posted on Instagram with the caption of 'nothing ventured, nothing gained'. 'Been challenging at times, but one I'll always look back on with many memories. Excited to be back home with my family.' Head coach Filo Tiatia paid tribute for Wilson for his efforts when trying to have a crack at rugby in Europe. "He's been a great character in our group, a well-liked and popular player, who has worked hard throughout his time with us," said the former All Black.
