Annaghmore Fitz Atlee takes the plaudits on Balmoral Show Day 3
Hallow Holsteins won the Balmoral Show 2025 Inter-Breed Dairy Championship with their immense fourth calver Annaghmore Fitz Atlee.
The Co Wexford pedigree breeding operation had the cow looking an absolute picture in the ring.
And she needed to be in top form. The competition from the other breed champions, all vying to secure the ultimate Balmoral 2025 dairy accolade, was immense.
But making the victory all the sweeter for the large crowds gathered around the show rings was the fact that the cow in question was bred in Co. Armagh by Clive and Joel Richardson, the driving forces behind Annaghmore Holsteins.
Annaghmore farm manager, Joshua Ebron, was on hand to discuss the merits of Fitz Atlee.
'She gave 10,800L of milk at 4.18% butterfat and 3.3% protein during her last lactation,' he explained.
'And she is currently giving 74L per day at 5.18% fat and 3.19% protein. The cow has been classified EX95.
'We are delighted with the progress that she continues to make.'
The Inter-Breed Reserve went to Co. Tyrone Ayrshire breeder, Stewart Baxter.
His champion and second calver, Carnell Barby Doll 13, also looked amazing in the ring.
Stewart commented: 'She was bought as a weanling heifer at the Carnell dispersal sale four years ago. I wanted to start up a number of new cow families in the herd. It was an investment that is now paying off.'
Barby Doll is now giving 43L of milk per day. The cow calved for the second time in January 2025 and will calve again at the beginning of next year. Barby Doll is in calf to Springhill Palmyra Robinson.
Ashley Fleming with the Jersey Reserve Champion at Balmoral Show 2025
Stewart has been milking Ayrshires for thirty years. His herd currently comprises a total of 70 animals.
'The Ayrshire is a very versatile breed,' he explained.
'The cows can produce lots of high quality milk in both grass based and high input production systems.'
The Jersey Championship at Balmoral 2025 was won by the Fleming family, from Seaforde in Co Down with Potterswalls Canadian Club Dawn.
A milking heifer, this was her first show outing in milk.
The Fleming family went on to win the Jersey Championship, Reserve Championship and Honourable Mention on the day.
Ashley Fleming commented: 'We were delighted with the results that we achieved. Potterswalls Victorious Season was selected as the breed reserve.
'A third calver, she gave 7,000L of milk at 6.2% fat and 4.3% protein during her last full lactation.'

Former Inter Milan boss Inzaghi lands new job with Saudi side before Club World Cup
FORMER INTER BOSS Simone Inzaghi was revealed as the new coach of Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal on Thursday, days before they take part in the new-look Club World Cup. The Italian, who led Inter to a heavy defeat in Saturday's Champions League final, had earlier played down rumours of a two-year deal worth €50 million. 'I am Simone Inzaghi and today begins my story with Al Hilal,' he said in a slickly produced video posted on X, in which he sips Arabian coffee and pins an Al Hilal lapel badge on his suit. Inzaghi, 49, becomes just the latest high-profile footballing acquisition for oil-rich Saudi Arabia, which will host the World Cup in 2034. Advertisement 'The Italian genius is here,' Al Hilal posted. 'Welcome, Simone Inzaghi.' Inzaghi joins the likes of Ruben Neves and Aleksandar Mitrovic at Al Hilal, which let injury-hit Neymar go in January after just seven appearances since his arrival in August 2023. A source with knowledge of the negotiations last week told AFP that the 'first option' for Cristiano Ronaldo, who has signalled he is leaving rival club Al Nassr, could be a move to Al Hilal. Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes this week said he rejected Al Hilal's reported $135 million offer because he wanted to 'continue to play at the highest level'. Inzaghi's Inter slumped 5-0 to Qatar-funded Paris Saint-Germain in Saturday's Champions League final. His departure was confirmed on Tuesday. The former forward guided Inter to one Serie A title and two Italian Cups since joining in 2021. He took them to two Champions League finals in three seasons but lost both. On track to repeat the treble heroics of 2010 just a few weeks ago, Inter ended the season trophyless after falling away in each competition. Inter, PSG, Real Madrid and Manchester City are also among the 32 teams at the expanded Club World Cup, which starts on 15 June. – © AFP 2025

Cesc Fabregas says he believes in ‘long-term' Como project amid links to Inter
Cesc Fabregas appeared to commit his future to Como amidst reports linking him with Inter Milan, stating he believes in the 'long-term project' at last season's Serie A newcomers. The former Arsenal and Spain midfielder guided the team to an impressive 10th-place finish in their first top-flight campaign for 21 years helped by a club-record six-match winning run between April and May. A first season in senior management for the 38-year-old ended with his reputation as a head coach significantly raised, reportedly catching the eye of Inter who are without a manager after Simone Inzaghi departed this week in the aftermath of Saturday's 5-0 Champions League final loss to Paris St Germain. Cesc Fabregas played for Chelsea and Arsenal in the Premier League (John Walton/PA) 'I really believe in the Como project,' Fabregas said at the SXSW event taking place in London, as reported by La Gazzetta della Sport. 'I started with this club because I was thinking about a long-term project. I don't want to finish my career at a club where there's a project for one or two years and then everything ends.' Fabregas, who is a minority shareholder of the club, joined Como as a player in 2022 and played out the final year of his career with the club in Serie B. After retiring the following summer, he joined the coaching staff, briefly taking charge of the first team as caretaker after boss Moreno Longo was sacked. Welsh coach Osian Roberts took charge for the remainder of the promotion-winning season while Fabregas completed his UEFA coaching qualifications, with the World Cup and Champions League-winner taking over last summer. 'I really believe in Como's long-term project,' he said. 'I arrived here as a player and I'm very, very happy because I get to work in the way that I want. We have the same goals and the same ambition. 'The President allows me to work the way I want, the way I see things. Fortunately, we share the same vision and have the same goal, which is to go as far as possible. 'We've become a really good team together, in a small town, in a small club but with big, very big ambitions for the future.' Inter meanwhile have signed Croatia international Petar Sucic from Dinamo Zagreb. The midfielder, who has seven international caps, played last season on loan at Bosnian side Zrinjski Mostar.

Simone Inzaghi departs Inter Milan after Champions League final humbling
Simone Inzaghi has left Inter Milan in the wake of their demolition by Paris St Germain in Saturday's Champions League final. The 49-year-old has been heavily linked with the job of Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal. Inter were chasing the treble as recently as late April only to be beaten by city rivals AC Milan in the Coppa Italia semi-finals before seeing Napoli claim the Serie A title by a single point. The final indignity came last weekend when they were routed 5-0 by PSG in Munich, their second defeat in the European showpiece in three years. It was decided that Inzaghi should depart during a meeting between the former Italy international and the club on Tuesday afternoon. Inter president Giuseppe Marotta said: "I would like to thank Simone Inzaghi for the work he has done, for the passion shown and also for the sincerity in today's discussion, which led to the common decision to part ways. "Only when we have fought together to achieve success day by day can we have a frank dialogue like the one that happened today." Inzaghi won six trophies during his four seasons at San Siro, including the 2023-24 Serie A title. He said: "The time has come for me to say goodbye to this club after a four-year-long journey, throughout which I gave my all. "Every day my first and last thought was always about Inter. It was then reciprocated with professionalism and passion by the players, leaders, and every single one of the club's employees. "I would like to thank the shareholders for their unwavering support, as well as the president and his associates for their daily help and constant dialogue. "On every difficult day, just like today, I think it's right to reiterate this sense of gratitude, even for the meeting that we had not long ago. We were sincere and together we decided to conclude this magnificent journey." Huge drama during the shootout as Julian Alvarez' penalty was chalked off for two touches. 📺 Watch 👉 📱 Updates 👉 — RTÉ Sport (@RTEsport) March 12, 2025 Meanwhile, accidental 'double touch' penalty kicks will be able to be retaken from 1 July if the kick was successful, the game's lawmakers have said. European football's governing body UEFA asked for the laws concerning these rare instances to be reviewed after Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez had a spot-kick disallowed in a shoot-out against Real Madrid in the Champions League last 16 in March. The Argentinian slipped and his standing leg made slight contact with the ball. Real went on to win the shoot-out. The International Football Association Board (IFAB), which sets the sport's laws, has now issued a clarification to Law 14. The law does not directly cover what to do in the event of an accidental double touch, and the IFAB said referees had "understandably" been penalising all such touches up to this point. However, the IFAB said Law 14's primary purpose was to deal with deliberate double touches and a clarification has now been issued to all national associations and confederations. The IFAB acknowledges it would be unfair not to penalise a double touch at all and allow such kicks to stand as a goal, because goalkeepers can be disadvantaged by the altered trajectory of the ball. However, it has now clarified that where an accidental 'double touch' kick is scored, it should be retaken. Where such kicks are unsuccessful, they should either result in an indirect free-kick if they occur during a match, or recorded as missed if they occur in a shoot-out.
