Former Peruvian president Ollanta Humala sentenced to 15 years for money laundering
A Peruvian court has sentenced former president Ollanta Humala and his wife, Nadine Heredia, to 15 years in prison for laundering funds received from Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht to finance Humala's 2006 and 2011 campaigns.
The judges of the national superior court found that Humala and Heredia received several million dollars in illegal contributions for these campaigns from Odebrecht and the government of then Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez.
The verdict makes Humala the third former Peruvian president to be imprisoned for corruption in the last two decades. He joins Alejandro Toledo, sentenced in 2024 to 20 years for Odebrecht-related crimes, and Alberto Fujimori, who received multiple convictions for corruption and human rights abuses.
The trial began in 2022, and alongside the 62-year-old former military officer and his 48-year-old wife, the court convicted eight others. Both Humala and Heredia were held in pre-trial detention from 2017 to 2018 at the prosecutor's request to prevent their flight.
Odebrecht's 2016 admission of widespread bribery across Latin America preceded the initial investigations against Humala, which started in 2015, a year before the company's revelations.
Most of the presidents who have governed Peru since 2001 have faced legal problems due to their connections with Odebrecht. Toledo is currently imprisoned, while the former president Pedro Pablo Kuczynski is under house arrest. Alan García, who served two non-consecutive terms, died by suicide in 2019 as authorities moved to arrest him in connection with Odebrecht bribes.
In addition to former presidents, prominent figures such as the former presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori and numerous ex-governors are also under investigation.

The former West Ham and France star stands accused of 'physical and psychological violence' towards his former 'mistress', Brazilian lawyer Larissa Natalya Ferrari, who was allegedly forced to drink her own urine and lick the floor during a turbulent seven-month affair. Last month, Brazilian outlet G1 claimed to have obtained a document with details of the case in which the lawyer attested to suffering from borderline personality disorder, believing the former Rio de Janeiro-based Vasco da Gama star took advantage of her condition. 'Dimitri knew about my passion and psychological problems, using this against me,' she is reported to have said by G1. 'Dimitri convinced me to put my head in the trash, in the toilet, made me drink my own urine and other sexual bizarre acts.' However, according to RMC Sport via Brazilian outlet Extra, the prosecutor's office is now seeking to dismiss the complaint due to a lack of evidence required to charge the 38-year-old. The report states that the plaintiff's defence has appealed the decision. Last month reports claimed that Payet had denied 'physical and psychological violence' towards his 'mistress' in a statement to Brazilian police. The Frenchman was reportedly heard at the Women's Assistance Police Station where he admitted to having a relationship with Ferrari but insisted every act during their union was consensual. Furthermore, Payet, who left his wife of almost 20 years Ludivine and their four children back in his homeland during his time in Brazil, was alleged to have admitted to the acts but maintained that they were consensual and proposed by Ferrari. G1's report mentioned an encounter when Ferrari 'requested slaps during sexual intercourse' and as a result, developed marks on her body. The Frenchman also reportedly claimed that the two used wooden chairs during sexual intercourse, and that, due to Ferrari's light skin, any pressure would lead to marks. It followed Ferrari's impassioned public plea for 'justice', in a statement in which she claimed to have been 'humiliated' by the 38-cap former Les Blues star. 'I want justice because he abused my psychological vulnerability to gain sexual advantage,' she told AFP. 'He demanded proof of love from me, which consisted of humiliation. 'I recorded videos in which I drank my urine, drank water from the toilet bowl, and licked the floor. I'm a lawyer, I would never have made such serious complaints lightly.' It was claimed that Payet refused Ferrari's desire to continue this relationship in France, on the condition he pay her expenses, as his time in the country approached its end. Payet's lawyer Sheila Lustoza told G1: 'It is regrettable that confidential records were leaked, but the case reveals with evidence something that is very clear: a woman exercising her freedom and will, as it should be, contrary to what has been publicly narrated up until now. The defense is confident that the truth that is proven by documents will demonstrate these facts.' Payet is widely regarded as one of West Ham's most talented players this century but left under a cloud to re-join Marseille after just 18 months in 2017. Mystery as missing businessman found dead in hole without any trousers or shoes

Adalberto Amarillo dos Santos Junior, 35, vanished on May 30 after he told a pal he was heading to pick up in his car at the Interlagos Race Track in southern Sao Paulo, Brazil. His body was later found inside a hole at a construction site in the same area on June 3. Police are treating his death as suspicious and are now investigating what happened in the hours before he vanished. In a bizarre twist, his body was found without trousers or trainers. There were no clear signs of a struggle and investigators did not find any blood at the scene. Adalberto's body was positively identified by family members, though his exact cause of death has not been determined. The helmet he had been wearing was found inside the hole, reports Brazilian outlet g1. Adalberto's wallet and mobile phone were also located at the site. Distressed family members have said Adalberto's bank has not registered any activity since he died. The city of Sao Paulo said the area where the businessman was found is part of a track refurbishment project with a new wall being constructed around the race track. The area was fenced off and the hole is estimated to be about 10ft deep and 1.4ft wide. Police fear Adalberto's body could have been placed in the hole after his death. Forensics did not identify any signs that he attempted to get out of the hole and said he had died between 36 and 40 hours before being found. The case is now under investigation by the 87th Police District and they are being supported by the Homicide and Personal Protection Department. Police have no explanation about how the businessman died, or how he came to be without his trousers and trainers. Race track organisers said they were supporting the investigation and have shared footage from security cameras at the site with police. "The Civil Police and the Fire Department were called," the statement said. "The investigations are ongoing by the DHPP Missing Persons Unit. The city government is at the authorities' disposal to assist in the progress of the case." No arrests have been made and police are continuing to investigate the circumstances around Adalberto's disappearance.
