Missing Gulfport girl, 16, was tortured, killed and dismembered, police say
At least one person is facing charges after investigators determined that a 16-year-old Gulfport girl who went missing last month was killed and her body dismembered and dumped in a Ruskin trash bin, police said.
Steven Gress, 35, has been charged with kidnapping in the disappearance of Miranda Corsette, and more charges against him and possibly other suspects are expected, St. Petersburg police Chief Anthony Holloway said Friday.
'This is a horrific crime,' Holloway said at a news conference. 'We want to ensure that we bring justice to Miranda.'
Corsette, who lived with her grandmother in Gulfport, was reported missing on Feb. 24. Her disappearance turned into a homicide investigation Thursday, when a witness contacted police to provide information in the case, Holloway said.
Detectives learned that Gress contacted Corsette through a dating app on Feb. 14, went to her home in Gulfport, where she lives with her grandmother, and picked her up, Holloway said. The two spent the day together at Gress' home, a duplex in the 2700 block of 27th Avenue North.
Corsette then returned to the home on her own the next day and remained there with Gress and his domestic partner, Michelle Ayleen Brandes, 36, according to police.
On Feb. 20, there was 'some sort of dispute over missing jewelry,' Holloway said.
'So from the 20th through the 24th, she was beaten and tortured because they could not find this piece of jewelry,' Holloway said.
Sometime within those five days, Corsette was killed. Gress then put Corsette's body in his car and drove to a home in the 12000 block of Mallory Drive in Largo, Holloway said.
Detectives found evidence that Corsette was dismembered there. Gress and Brandes then drove the body to Ruskin, where they dumped the remains in a dumpster in the 2800 block of 14th Avenue Southeast, Holloway said.
Investigators believe Corsette's body may now be in a Hillsborough County landfill.
Gress was already in the county jail when the witness came forward Thursday. He was arrested Wednesday on charges of aggravated assault and drug possession. Holloway said Gress pointed a harpoon at Brandes in that case.
Police were still looking for Brandes as of Friday afternoon.
'Michelle, if you're out there, we're trying to tell you to turn yourself in, because we will find you sooner or later,' Holloway said. 'If anybody out there is trying to help Michelle, if we can, we will charge you with the charges we can charge you with."
Gulfport police Cmdr. Mary Farrand, who is the department's acting chief, said the department was very familiar with Corsette because she frequently ran away from home and had mental health and drug abuse issues. The teen's grandmother was her primary caregiver.
'She said that she normally comes home so she doesn't report her missing every time she leaves, she just didn't come back in a timely manner this time,' Farrand said.
Police asked anyone with information on Brandes' whereabouts or the case to call 727-893-7780 or text SPPD and your tip to TIP411.

Family of teenage girl allegedly tortured and murdered by man she met on Grindr sues app
The family of a Florida teenager who was allegedly tortured, murdered and dismembered by a man she met on Grindr has filed a lawsuit, claiming the girl would still be alive if she had never met the man on the dating app. Miranda Corsette, 16, met Steven Gress, 35, on the app on February 14. Gress and his girlfriend, Michelle Brandes, 37, allegedly held the teen against her will inside Gress' St. Petersburg home before killing her. Corsette suffocated to death after the couple allegedly shoved a billiard ball in her mouth and wrapped her head in plastic before chopping her up and stuffing her body parts in the trunk of their car. Months later, a representative of Corsette's estate filed a lawsuit against Grindr, alleging that the features of the app and lack of safeguards for minors contributed to the girl's death. 'Without Grindr, we believe that Miranda would have never met this Steven Gress character, and she'd still be alive,' Attorney Lorne Kaiser said. 'This was a completely foreseeable event. Grinder has been warned for years and years about children and minors getting on this platform, and it's obviously a dangerous platform for children.' It was alleged that Gress was able to target Corsette through the app because of its 'lax age verification and hyper-precise geolocation.' 'The trauma inflicted upon M.C. (Miranda) and the irreparable harm to her family are direct consequences of Grindr's reckless disregard for the safety of minor children who are routinely preyed upon by adult predators who use Grindr's platform and design as a trap,' the suit states. According to the St. Petersburg Police Department, Gress and the teen first hung out at the couple's St. Petersburg home on February 14. He drove her home, and then she returned the next day. Gress told detectives that he was told she was 21 but later learned she was 16, according to an arrest affidavit. It wasn't long before Gress accused her of stealing his ring, which sparked the weeklong abuse and torture, the warrant states. As Gress allegedly continued to torture Corsette in their home, his girlfriend reportedly found the missing ring in Gress's car. Police said there is no evidence Corsette took the ring. The torture ended on February 23 when Brandes allegedly shoved a billiard ball into the teen's mouth and wrapped her head in plastic, a witness said. Gress reportedly told her not to cover her nose, but Brandes did, the witness said, and Corsette suffocated. After she was killed, Gress allegedly put her body in a car and drove to a house in Largo, where police say Gress used a chainsaw to dismember her body. They put the remains in trash bags and tossed them into a dumpster, and police later learned that the contents went to the county's incinerator. The new lawsuit claims the LGBTQ+ dating app failed to implement safeguards to prevent minors like Corsette from using it. 'Long before February 14, 2025, it was clear to Grindr that it was only a matter of time before its app, as Grindr marketed it and designed it, would cause the torture, rape, and murder of a child,' the lawsuit states. According to the suit, the app only requires a self-reported birthdate to confirm users are at least 18, with no cross-checking against official documentation or third-party verification at sign-up. The lawsuit claims the teen's murder 'exposes the platform's gross negligence in relying on a farcical self-reported age verification system. This performative gesture, as absurd as a bar or strip club asking teenagers to state their age without checking ID, allowed a minor to access an adult-oriented platform with foreseeable catastrophic consequences.' It's also claimed that the app's geolocation services 'deliver hyper-precise, real-time geolocation tracking — accurate to within a few feet — designed to facilitate immediate sexual encounters. As such, Grindr arranges user profiles based on their distance from other users for instant and spontaneous sexual hookups creating a uniquely hazardous environment for minors.' Corsette's family member is seeking $750,000 and is asking the court to order Grindr to implement more robust age verification measures, like government-issued identification verification or facial age estimation system, and to stop what the suit claims are misleading claims about the app's safety. Grindr LLC has not yet filed a response to the suit, according to Gress and Brandes are facing first-degree murder charges for Corsette's death and are being held at the Pinellas County Jail without bond. Prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty in the case.

20 years after Natalee Holloway vanished, suspect's confession still leaves questions: PI
Graphic content warning Twenty years have passed since 18-year-old Natalee Holloway of Alabama disappeared on May 30, 2005, during a senior trip to Aruba with her high school friends, but the Holloway family's private investigator says there are still many unanswered questions in the case. In 2023, 36-year-old Dutch national Joran van der Sloot, the primary suspect in Holloway's disappearance and murder, confessed to bashing the teenager's head with a brick and dumping her body in the ocean after she refused his advances. "I smash her head in with it completely," van der Sloot said in an Oct. 3, 2023, interview with federal authorities. "Her face basically, you know, collapses in. Even though it's dark, I can see her face is collapsed in." TJ Ward, a private investigator hired by Holloway's family in 2005 and again in 2010, does not believe he acted alone. Lessons Learned In Natalee Holloway Disappearance Apply To Sudiksha Konanki Case: Retired Fbi Agent Read On The Fox News App "Twenty years, can you believe that?" he told Fox News Digital in an interview this week, marking two decades since the 18-year-old graduate vanished from Carlos'n Charlie's, a restaurant and nightclub in Oranjestad, Aruba. "She had a bright future. She got a scholarship to go to college for medical school – ubelievable." Ward does work for a voice analysis company based in Israel, which paid the private investigator to travel to Aruba after Holloway disappeared. There, he met with her parents as well as the FBI and Aruba authorities. Ward said he used the voice analysis technology on van de Sloot's existing interviews at the time and determined that he was lying to authorities and to the public. Beth Holloway Addresses Missing American College Student, Urges 'Full Circle' Safety Plan "We knew numerous times along the course of the investigation [and] over the last few years that Joran van der Sloot was not telling the truth," Ward said. "Thereafter, we started locating witnesses and talking and finding information that was going on with the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, and we knew a lot of the information that Van der Sloot was communicating was not true." Holloway was last seen leaving Carlos'n Charlie's with van der Sloot and two other men, brothers Satish and Deepak Kalpoe, on the evening of May 30, two decades ago as of Friday. The three men were considered early suspects in the case. News Anchor's Mysterious Disappearance Was Crime Of 'Jealousy': Private Investigator Police arrested van der Sloot but eventually released him due to a lack of evidence. Authorities eyed the same suspects again in 2007 after uncovering "new facts" but wound up releasing them once more. Holloway's remains have never been found. Timeline Of Alabama Teen Natalee Holloway's Death Five years to the day after Holloway's disappearance, van der Sloot killed 21-year-old Stephany Flores, a business student from a wealthy Peruvian family who crossed paths with the killer on May 30, 2010. Van der Sloot later confessed to killing her in a fit of anger after she learned about his connection to Holloway's disappearance. They had met earlier in her father's casino in Lima, and he beat her to death in his hotel room the following morning. Joran Van Der Sloot Has Confessed To Killing Natalee Holloway In June 2010, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Alabama announced an indictment on extortion and wire fraud charges against Van der Sloot for allegedly trying to sell information about the whereabouts of her body to her family. "Joran contacted Natalie's mother and Natalie's attorney, John Q. Kelly, in New York and said that for $250,000 he would tell Beth exactly what happened to his daughter," Ward said. "So John Q. Kelly, along with the FBI, arranged to set up a room in the Marriott with the Aruban authorities … and Joran van der Sloot came in and started telling Beth and John Q. Kelly that Natalie was buried under a house in the concrete. Well, they in turn gave him $25,000 cash, on film, and he then departed. He should have been arrested right then and there for the FBI for trying to extort Natalie's mother." Peru Allows Natalee Holloway's Killer Multiple Conjugal Visits For His Mental Health, Rehabilitation He then left the United States and later told Beth Holloway and Kelly that he lied. Van der Sloot is currently serving prison time in Peru for Flores' murder. He is expected to be released in 2036, at which point Peruvian authorities will extradite him back to the United States to serve his concurrent 20-year sentence for Holloway's murder. AUDIO: LISTEN TO JORAN VAN DER SLOOT'S CONFESSION "You have brutally murdered, in separate incidents, years apart, two young women who refused your sexual advances," Judge Anna Manasco told van der Sloot in court in 2023, referencing Flores' murder. Joran Van Der Sloot's Whirlwind Plea Deal: 'He Won The Game,' But Family Accepts Closure Manasco called the extortion and fraud charges "heinous" because the killer knew the information he was selling was a lie to make a profit. However, as part of the deal, she said federal prosecutors have agreed not to use his confession against him for any other purposes. "After 18 years, Natalee's case has been solved," Beth Holloway told reporters outside the courthouse immediately after van der Sloot's 2023 sentencing hearing in Holloway's death. "Joran van der Sloot is the killer." In a victim-impact statement during the hearing, Holloway's mother tore into van der Sloot, saying he taunted her family and caused indescribable pain before turning to him and saying, "You look like hell." Ward told Fox News Digital this week that Beth Holloway feels "kind of satisfied with the fact that he is in prison, and now he's gotten jail time in the United States, which he's going to have to do concurrent to the charges in Peru of the 20 years in the United States in the federal penitentiary. " Click Here For More True Crime From Fox News The private investigator added that he continues to stay in touch with Dave Holloway to this day and that they have not reached "a finalization of what happened." "Even though Joran van der Sloot confessed in 2023, we're not convinced that he was alone with what transpired with Natalee Halloway," Ward said. "But again, our conclusion, as of today, Dave Holloway and I are still looking and trying to gather information, which we believe that there's other people involved with Joran van der Sloot when she was on the beach in May 30, 2005." Ward said he does not believe van der Sloot acted alone, and he is still working to determine if others were involved. Ruskin neighbors had long called for safety changes prior to crash that killed 4
RUSKIN, Fla. (WFLA) — A group of Ruskin neighbors said they've repeatedly called on Hillsborough County for safety improvements after dealing with non-stop speeding and crashes in their comes after a deadly vehicle crash near Shell Point Road West and 32nd Street Northwest. Surveillance video shows the horrifying moments a car blew through the intersection and into Julie Coleman's home, killing the four adults inside the vehicle. The community is asking what it will take for some speed bumps or a stop sign, and the couple who live in the home that's now destroyed said they have no other option than to leave. 'God doesn't want us here,' said Coleman. 'First, the house floods, it's never flooded, and then this happens, and people have died.' Thankfully, Coleman and her husband weren't home when it happened. Their home was already undergoing renovations after it was flooded by Hurricane Helene, and now it's deemed uninhabitable.'There's been deaths,' said Coleman. 'Four people have died, and all we need was some stop signs.'Coleman said Hillsborough County needs to make Shell Point Road safer for those who there because it's been incident after incident. Coleman recalled another crash that happened just months ago.'Somebody else came through that intersection and flipped his car when his car hit the guidewires and his body landed in my driveway,' she vehicle from Sunday night's incident finally stopped when it smashed into her neighbor's car.'We've made this evident to the county, we've told them something is going to happen,' said Mark Larson, Coleman's neighbor. 'What's it going to take? It happened last night.'Emails show Larson has repeatedly called for the county to take action along this road since 2019.'We're asking for them to slow people down,' said Larson. 'We're asking for Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office presence. We're asking for a three-way stop, speed bumps. We're asking for something to help.'But with no solution, the Colemans are forced out, not knowing what is next.'We love it here, we've made so many good friends, but we're out of here,' said Coleman. There has been no word on what led up to the crash, the victim's identities or how fast the car was traveling. We have requested information from Hillsborough County, the Sheriff's Office and Fire Rescue, but the agencies are closed for Memorial Day. 8 On Your Side will stay on this story as neighbors demand safety improvements.
