Funeral to be held for former senior IRA man Brendan McFarlane

Yahoo25-02-2025

The funeral of former senior IRA man Brendan 'Bik' McFarlane is to be held.
McFarlane, from the Ardoyne area of north Belfast, was known for taking part in the biggest escape in UK prison history.
He died at the age of 74 after a short illness on Friday.
Crowds, which included former Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams, Donegal TD Pearse Doherty, Cavan Monaghan TD Matt Carthy and North Belfast MP John Finucane, gathered outside his family home off the Cliftonville Road for a burial service and blessing by priest Father Gary Donegan.
Sinn Fein MLA Gerry Kelly is set to deliver a graveside oration at Milltown Cemetery later.
The party's president Mary Lou McDonald described McFarlane as 'a giant of Irish republicanism'.
He was sent to Maze Prison after being convicted of a deadly bomb attack on a pub in the Protestant Shankill Road area in 1975.
McFarlane was the officer in command of the H-Block prisoners during the 1981 hunger strike over conditions in the Maze.
He was among 38 IRA inmates who fled the Maze in Co Antrim in September 1983.
They used smuggled guns and knives to overpower prison staff before hijacking a food lorry and driving to the main gate.
He was later recaptured with fellow escapee Mr Kelly in the Netherlands.

Greta Thunberg and ‘selfie yacht' pals refused to watch ‘horror film of the Oct. 7 massacre': Israel

Greta Thunberg and other detained activists on her Gaza-bound 'selfie yacht' refused to watch a film detailing Hamas' slaughter of more than 1,000 people in Israel, according to officials. 'Greta and her flotilla companions were taken into a room upon their arrival for a screening of the horror film of the October 7 massacre,' Israel's defense minister, Israel Katz, said of the group's arrival in the port of Ashdod after they were detained about 125 miles off the coast Monday. But 'when they saw what it was about, they refused to continue watching,' Katz said, according to The Times of Israel. Advertisement 'The antisemitic flotilla members are turning a blind eye to the truth and have proven once again that they prefer the murderers to the murdered and continue to ignore the atrocities committed by Hamas against Jewish and Israeli women, adults and children,' Katz said.. 3 Thunberg was deported Tuesday after being detained aboard the Gaza-bound 'Madleen,' which Israel dismissed as a 'selfie yacht.' The 22-year-old was flown home to Sweden via France. Other activists who refused deportation were being held in detention, with their cases set to be heard. 3 Video from Oct. 7 showed Hamas terrorists kidnapping an bound and bloodied woman. The activists said they were protesting a humanitarian crisis in Gaza since the conflict began with Hamas' terror attack 20 months ago. Israel, for its part, dismissed the saga as a stunt, noting how the celebs onboard, including Irish actor Liam Cunningham, had posed smiling pictures for social media. Expert warns 'China Shock' on manufacturing that struck one state could spread to the rest of the country via the 'Big Beautiful Bill': 'A chilling effect'

Few states were hit harder by "the China Shock" than North Carolina. Now, few are seeing a bigger manufacturing revival. This is an economic turnaround story that every American should hear. After China joined the World Trade Organization in 2001, factory jobs in North Carolina collapsed — especially in textiles, apparel, and furniture. Entire communities in places like Hickory and Alamance County saw their local economies hollowed out. Between 2000 and 2010, the state lost nearly 330,000 manufacturing jobs — that's almost half its industrial workforce gone in less than a decade. The Great Recession accelerated those job losses as companies invested in automation. Since then, manufacturing jobs have been basically flat. But that could soon change. In 2022, Democrats passed the Inflation Reduction Act — the largest investment in clean energy and advanced manufacturing in U.S. history. North Carolina has emerged as one of the biggest winners of this law. Companies have flocked to the state, investing more than $20 billion in new advanced manufacturing facilities. These factories are expected to generate thousands of jobs. This manufacturing renaissance could come to an early end if the IRA is repealed as part of the so-called "Big Beautiful Bill." To that end, few U.S. senators will hold more sway in these negotiations than Thom Tillis from North Carolina. Tillis has voiced concern about killing the IRA, and he was one of four senators who publicly supported the protection of clean energy incentives. North Carolina has benefited from $23 billion in clean energy manufacturing investments since the IRA passed. If the law is repealed, the state could lose 17,500 future jobs. Tillis has warned that an abrupt repeal would create "whiplash" for investors and "devastate" America's ability to remain an innovation leader. Should the government continue to give tax incentives for energy-efficient home upgrades? Absolutely No Depends on the upgrade I don't know Click your choice to see results and speak your mind. An immediate phaseout, he told The Washington Post, would "have a chilling effect" on "future investments" in the domestic energy sector. In fact, the manufacturing renaissance resulting from the Inflation Reduction Act, CHIPS and Science Act, and Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill has amounted to a 279% increase in manufacturing across America. Whether that manufacturing growth will continue may be up to the senators debating the Big Beautiful Bill in Congress. Editor's note: If you want to use your voice to make a difference, you can look up how to contact your own state senators here — whether or not (and perhaps especially if not) they appear on this list. Public disorder breaks out in Northern Irish town, with missiles thrown at police

LONDON (Reuters) -Public disorder broke out in Ballymena town centre in Northern Ireland following a protest reportedly over an alleged sexual assault case on Monday, with police saying a number of missiles had been thrown towards officers. The unrest follows a protest in the area, about 45 km (30 miles) from the capital city of Belfast, earlier on Monday evening, the police statement said, adding damage was reported to a number of properties. Social media footage, purportedly showing the disorder, captured plumes of fire near what appeared to be residential buildings, with police present at the scene. Another clip appeared to show a masked man throwing an object at police vans as a crowd looked on. Reuters could not immediately verify the authenticity of these clips. "We are urging everyone to remain calm and to act responsibly," Chief Superintendent Sue Steen said in the police statement. BBC News reported that hundreds of protesters had gathered in Ballymena in response to a case involving two teenage boys who appeared before Coleraine Magistrates' Court earlier in the day, accused of sexually assaulting a teenage girl in the County Antrim town. Irish media outlet RTE News reported that the teenagers, who it said are Romanian and spoke through an interpreter, cannot be identified because of their ages. A separate police statement from Sunday said two teenage boys had been charged with attempted rape in connection with a serious sexual assault on a teenage girl in Ballymena on Saturday evening.
