Leon Draisaitl was born in Cologne, Germany, in 1995, his father, Peter Draisaitl, was a respected hockey player and coach, that meant Leon grew up with a clear path laid before him; ice, skates, and strategy, but having a hockey lineage didn't mean shortcuts.
He worked through German leagues, then made the bold leap to Canada in his teens.
His move to the Western Hockey League wasn't just a step up; it was a cultural shift. He adapted to a faster game, new language, and new expectations. That transition became the first major test in a career marked by resilience.
Draft day to dominant presence
Oilers' Leon Draisaitl Opens The West Final Scoring With His Amazing Release
By 2014, his name was called third overall by the Edmonton Oilers. It was a milestone not just for him, but for German hockey.
Most European players take time to adjust to the NHL. Draisaitl found his rhythm early.
His game matured with the Oilers. By pairing power with finesse. Soon, he wasn't just another name on the roster. He became one of the NHL's top scorers, by 2020, he claimed the Hart Trophy and Ted Lindsay Award. This put his name among the league's elite, and for a kid once chasing pucks in Cologne, this was global validation.

He's in a relationship with actress Celeste Desjardins, and while they post the occasional photo, most of their life stays off-screen. He doesn't chase headlines, preferring to let his game speak.
But he hasn't stayed removed from impact. Over time, he's aligned with causes, participated in charity events, and even stepped into the brand world as Puma's first NHL ambassador. His reach is now wider than the rink.
Legacy beyond points and awards
Today, Draisaitl is known not only for goals but for redefining the image of a European star in the NHL.
His success opened doors for others from non-traditional hockey countries. He's played for Germany on the world stage and carries the sport's torch for his homeland.
There's more ahead; perhaps new records, a new contract, or a deeper playoff run. But even now, his legacy feels secure. Draisaitl's career is a story of bridging continents, shattering expectations, and carving out a place that's uniquely his.

Spl court allows Rhea to travel abroad for work commitments
Mumbai: Accused in the drugs case probed following the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput , actor Rhea Chakraborty has been granted permission by a special court to travel abroad for professional commitments for three months. The order allowed Chakraborty to journey to Sri Lanka, Serbia and various European countries between June 1 and Sept 15 for an acting role in the project 'Stepsons S1'. While the prosecution had opposed the plea, the court noted she had been granted permission in the past and had not violated any conditions. "Moreover, she is a resident of Mumbai, having deep roots in the society therefore, chances of absconding is lesser. Considering her request and keeping in mind her past behaviour I am inclined to allow to travel abroad for the aforesaid period," the judge said. Her lawyer highlighted her previous successful international travels on six occasions, during which she consistently adhered to all bail conditions and returned. tnn

'Players are not happy': Dallas Stars coach Pete DeBoer under fire after pulling out Jake Oettinger in Game 5 loss
The Dallas Stars faced a devastating loss against the Edmonton Oilers in the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs Western Conference Final and lost their entry to the Stanley Cup Finals. But now, it seems like the Dallas Stars' head coach, Pete DeBoer, has run into trouble after he made a controversial move of pulling out the team's goaltender, Jake Oettinger. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Dallas Stars' coach, Pete DeBoer, has made players uncomfortable with his controversial decision in Game 5 against the Edmonton Oilers Recently, NHL insider and The Fourth Period's David Pagnotta made a post on what has been happening behind the scenes. David Pagnotta's recent post on X reads as, 'Noise out of Dallas re: Pete DeBoer. Per multiple sources, players are not pleased with how he handled several situations during the WCF, along with post Gm5 & exit media remarks. Told players voiced concerns during internal exit interviews. DeBoer has 1yr left on his contract' and fans agree with this take. A fan commented, 'Should be fired just based on pulling Oettinger so dam early in a do or die match', while another fan wrote, 'Knew I wasn't the only one that wasn't a fan of DeBoer. How he treated Otter was unacceptable.' A third fan posted, 'This was my first thought after the missteps from DeBoer. Players are not going to like the way he went about this, and I think it'll be difficult for them to move past that', while another user wrote, 'don't mess with my goalie also applies to the head coach.' A fifth fan noted, 'DeBoer was already on the hot seat before the Oettinger comments - that was just a desperation play. Still hard to grasp what he was thinking, though. If he stays, the room resents him. If he's fired, future teams & players will remember how he threw his goalie under the bus.' For the unversed, a few days ago, in Game 5 against the Edmonton Oilers, Jake Oettinger was pulled out of the game just minutes into the first round. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Jake Oettinger even spoke about it after the game and said, 'I wasn't expecting that to happen. It was surprising. But the reality is, if I make one or two of those saves, I'd still (be playing) in the game.' An official confirmation about Pete DeBoer's situation with the team is awaited. Also Read:
