Channi ‘missing' no more! MP puts rumours to rest
It has been around 10 months since Charanjit Singh Channi got elected as a Member of Parliament from Jalandhar. But it seems like he can't catch a break. Posters declaring the former Punjab Chief Minister 'missing' were plastered across the city by his political detractors recently. BJP Punjab's Yuva Morcha put up such posters in localities up and down the Jalandhar Cantt Assembly segment.
The controversy blew up further as former MP and saffron party leader Sushil Kumar Rinku shared similar posters on social media. Channi shrugged off the criticism, quipping, 'I hope that engaging in such activities helps BJP leaders get some publicity.' Wow!
Punjab government employees available on phone 24x7

They have been forbidden from switching off their phones. Sources say it was the Personnel Department that issued these instructions. Besides, administrative secretaries of the departments concerned have been asked to ensure compliance with the directions. The urgency of certain administrative tasks has been cited as the reason behind the move.
The revolving door of Punjab's Vigilance Bureau
The recent suspension of Punjab Vigilance Bureau Chief Director SPS Parmar — a 1997 batch IPS officer — by the AAP-led Punjab government has raised eyebrows. After all, it is the third time in just three months that the vigilance bureau chief in the state has been shown the door.
Parmar had taken over from G Nageshwar Rao, an IPS officer of the 1996 batch, who was given his marching orders in just a month after assuming charge. Before that, in February, Varinder Kumar — who belonged to the 1993 batch of IPS — was transferred. Kumar, who was appointed as the VB chief in May 2022, is yet to get any posting, though he is set to retire on July 31.

New Delhi: The suspension of Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda over the Chinnaswamy stadium stampede is not "rational and justified", former IPS officer Kiren Bedi said on Saturday, as she joined a string of voices from the police association to condemn the action. "Every case of law and order is unique. We need somebody who has to explain (what happened). He had to be heard. Did the commissioner ignore everybody? How can you just pick up the commissioner? It is unfair. He has not worked in isolation," Ms Bedi told NDTV. "Any suspension which is not rational, justified, explained is demoralising for the entire force. This suspension order is taken like a fly out of a milk. You need to find out if there is a swarm of flies...," she added. The former IPS officer said the people of Bengaluru do not even know who played what role in managing the crowd that had gathered outside the stadium. "He (Mr Dayananda) did not work in isolation. There was a whole headquarters, the secretariat and the political leadership involved," she said. Eleven people - all below the age of 40, including a 14-year-old, died and more than 50 suffered injuries in the stampede that broke out at the stadium gate on Wednesday, when a large number of people thronged to celebrate Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)'s first-ever victory in the Indian Premier League. A day later, Mr Dayananda was suspended for alleged dereliction of duty, and Seemanth Kumar Singh was appointed to the top post. Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal was also transferred and was replaced by Sudheer Kumar Reddy. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's political secretary K Govindaraj was sacked and head of the intelligence department, Hemant Nimbalkar, was transferred. Four people, including an RCB marketing head, have been arrested so far. The police commissioner is a part and parcel of the whole system that has either delivered or not delivered, Ms Bedi said. "If he is a part of the problem, then he is a part of the solution? How can you remove the solution? She also said that a police assessment is very vital to understand the sequence of events that lead to such tragedies. "Their assessment is very vital to be heard in meetings held by people like the chief secretary... You cannot just pick and choose. It is an administration vs an organisation affair," she said. Ms Bedi's remarks came as several of her retired colleagues in the association criticised Mr Dayananda's suspension and alleged the police were being made a "scapegoat" in the case. Echoing similar sentiments, former Bengaluru Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao said: "Sacking a police officer like Dyanand is unacceptable. He and his team safeguarded the city all night and now, he has been bulldozed," he said. They brought the (RCB) team on a chartered flight. Mr Shivakumar thought he would identify himself with the youth. A police commissioner and his entire team being suspended is unheard of," he said. He said the suspended officials can approach the Central Administrative Tribunal to dispute the government action since the police association cannot take up individual cases. Sources in the police association alleged a clear violation of the law by the RCB and sought a thorough probe into the matter, "without any political pressure". "In the light of the facts available in the public domain, it seems the police have been made a scapegoat in this case to save face," a source said. "The sequence of events show that everyone at the top level of the government was aware of the program. To say that the police commissioner did not consult senior officials is not correct," the source added.

Citing CAG data, Jagan claims Andhra's fiscal performance indicates 'distress'

Though the TDP-led NDA government on May 1 proclaimed that net GST collection of the state government for the month of April 2025 had been the 'highest' since the introduction of GST at Rs 3,354 crore, Reddy said technically net GST will be subsequent to all adjustments. As soon as the CAG figures have become public, the government 'mischievously' issues one more press release suggesting that even in May month the GST revenues were at record high, he alleged. "In this press release they mention that, in April, 2025, the Central Government deducted Rs 796 crores on account of adjustment of advance apportionment from IGST (integrated GST), so GST revenues have come down," said to the opposition leader, advance apportionment of IGST is accounted for under minor head 110 and is part of SGST (state GST) under major head 0006 of government said this is a regular process and net GST revenues would be arrived at after accounting for all these adjustments, and added that it was the case in the previous years as well."The May 1 press release says that net GST collection is Rs 3,354 crore for April 2025. Now, they (govt) say that Rs 796 crore is adjusted. One can clearly understand that this is nothing but a cover up after truth about the GST revenue is brought to light by the CAG," said Reddy. Further, the opposition leader observed that quite contrary to what the NDA alliance government had suggested, the figures released by CAG indicate that the 'trend of economic sluggishness' is more pronounced in April with the tax revenues dropping by 12.21 percent and non-tax revenues registering a fall of 22 percent when compared to April 2024. If the state's own revenues are taken into consideration, Reddy said, the fall over the previous year is 12.76 percent, indicating a 'very gloomy picture'. Meanwhile, there was no immediate reaction from the ruling TDP.
