National Lean Conference Comes to Winnipeg June 9-12 to Address Canada's Productivity Crisis and Supply Chain Resilience

Cision Canada20-05-2025

WINNIPEG, MB, May 20, 2025 /CNW/ - Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) is proud to announce that its flagship Embracing Excellence Lean Conference will take place June 9–12, 2025, at the RBC Convention Centre in Winnipeg, bringing together, over the course of four days, nearly 1,000 industry leaders from across the country to confront Canada's most pressing manufacturing challenges: lagging productivity, supply chain instability, and global trade uncertainty.
"Canada's productivity crisis is directly impacting our competitiveness," said Otto Kemerle, CME Manitoba Advisory Board Chair and President of the International Truck Body. "Through Lean, manufacturers can take control of what they can improve. Operations, processes, and people. It's a strategic response to volatility that doesn't rely on subsidies or major capital injections."
This year's program will explore how Lean methodologies can be applied to increase productivity without major capital investment, build resilient and responsive supply chains, and help Canadian manufacturers remain agile in the face of global economic shifts. It will also emphasize the importance of people and culture in sustaining long-term performance focusing on leadership, team engagement, and frontline empowerment.
"Manufacturers are being squeezed by rising costs and increasing trade uncertainty," said Todd Leroy, Vice President of Manufacturing at Loewen Windows. "To stay competitive, we need to do more with what we already have. Improving productivity through Lean isn't optional; it's essential. It allows us to adapt quickly without relying on external support or massive infrastructure overhauls."
This national event will offer immersive learning, practical case studies, and in-depth conversations on Lean manufacturing as a strategy to enhance competitiveness, agility, and workforce engagement.
By gathering national voices in Winnipeg, the conference highlights Manitoba's strategic manufacturing and logistics role and supports regional efforts to build stronger, smarter operations that can weather uncertainty.

Competition Bureau sues DoorDash for allegedly misleading customers over fees

Canada's competition watchdog is suing DoorDash Inc. and its Canadian subsidiary, accusing it of marketing its online delivery services at a lower price than what consumers actually wind up paying. The Competition Bureau alleged Monday that an investigation found DoorDash customers were unable to purchase food and other items at prices advertised on the food delivery company's websites and mobile apps because of mandatory fees added at checkout. The extra charges range from service and delivery fees to amounts sought for couriering things a further distance, placing smaller orders or making purchases in B.C., where DoorDash has to comply with minimum wage regulations for gig workers. Start your day with a roundup of B.C.-focused news and opinion. By signing up you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc. A welcome email is on its way. The bureau alleged the charges were sometimes framed as if they were taxes, when in reality, they are charges imposed at DoorDash's discretion. The fees resulted in customers paying higher prices than advertised and amounted to a deceptive practice known as drip pricing, which the bureau alleges DoorDash may have used for close to a decade to make nearly from $1 billion from mandatory fees. The bureau wants the company to stop the practice, cease portraying fees as taxes, pay a penalty and issue restitution to affected consumers. DoorDash is pushing back on the requests, saying 'it does not hide fees from consumers or mislead them in any way.' 'This application is a misguided and excessive attempt to target one of Canada's leading local commerce platforms,' DoorDash spokesperson Trent Hodson said in a statement to The Canadian Press. 'It unfairly singles out DoorDash, and we intend to vigorously defend ourselves against these claims.' The Competition Bureau has been more aggressive in its fight against drip pricing since the Competition Act was amended in June 2022 to more clearly distinguish the practice as harmful, giving regulators more room to pursue companies who engage in such activity. The bureau accused Cineplex Inc. of drip pricing in May 2023, eventually winning a $38.9-million fine against the movie theatre giant, which is contesting the decision from the Competition Tribunal. Other recent Competition Bureau targets for drip pricing have included SiriusXM Canada, Discount Car & Truck Rentals Ltd. and TicketNetwork. Its Door Dash court filing shows it is going after the business for making 'false or misleading representations' because 'when consumers go online to order, they expect these services to deliver not just food, but also honest pricing.' 'Consumers expect that the price they see advertised will match what they ultimately pay,' the bureau's application said. With four bricks-and-mortar stores already open, there are plans to bring the brand to more Canadian cities this year. We caught up with company director Jiayi Lyu to learn more. Q: What is Understance? A: Understance is a Vancouver-based lingerie brand. We take a solution-oriented, rather than fashion-oriented, approach to making undergarments. Our goal is to make all of our customers feel comfortable and supported. Q: What makes it unique? A: What sets Understance apart is our focus on fit, comfort, and education. We offer one of the most extensive size ranges available in North America, from cup sizes A to N and band sizes from 28 to 48. We split bras into eight size groups and take a tailored approach to each. Essential reading for hockey fans who eat, sleep, Canucks, repeat. On our website and at our stores, we guide you to the best match for your size and shape. We've built proprietary resources like Branatomy, an educational page that helps customers better understand their breast shape and how it impacts bra fit. Our products are engineered to be as functional as they are beautiful. Our innovations, like FlexWire, are a testament to the thousands of hours our product team spends in the fitting rooms. Q: Who is the target customer? A: Our customer is anyone who wants to feel supported, understood, and comfortable, especially those who have felt overlooked by traditional lingerie brands. That includes people going through life transitions like pregnancy, post-surgery recovery, and weight changes, more mature customers who prioritize fit and comfort over trends, and anyone with unique fit challenges. We believe everyone deserves to feel good in their bra, and in their own skin. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Q: Is there a hero design in the collection? A: We don't believe that there is a perfect bra for everybody. What works well for 44G simply won't work for 30B. For the petite size range (A-C cups), our core product at the moment is Light 'n Free; for the middle size range (D-DDD cups), we recommend Zoe and Ivy; for the full size range (G-J cups), we recommend Salma and Ginger; and for the fuller size range (K-N cups), we recommend Addison and Dominique. These products best represent the Understance approach: gentle but supportive, forgiving but precise, sophisticated and simple at the same time. Understance opened its second Metro Vancouver boutique this spring at Metrotown in Burnaby. Photo by Understance Q: What more can you share about the brand's store plans following the U.S. tariff changes? A: Due to recent tariff changes affecting U.S. imports, we've made the difficult decision to pause U.S. shipping beginning April 24. With a $59 bra now subject to more than $95 in additional duties, continuing to serve our U.S. customers under these conditions would compromise our commitment to accessible, fair pricing. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. In light of this, we are turning our focus to strengthening our presence in local markets, with a particular emphasis on retail expansion across Canada. Our newest boutique in Burnaby's Metrotown Centre marks an exciting step forward. This location allows us to bring our solution-based, inclusive lingerie offerings even closer to Canadian customers and visitors — complete with expert fittings available in-store. Q: What is the price range for the products? A: Our pricing reflects both quality and accessibility. Most bras range between $59 and $72, while our sleepwear and lounge collections start around $45. Q: And where can people learn more? A: At one of our four boutique locations across British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario, where our expert team offers personalized fittings and guidance tailored to your unique shape and needs. Each store carries our full range of solution-based lingerie, including exclusive collections and in-depth fit support.
