Shein hit with complaint from EU consumer group over ‘dark patterns'

LONDON : Pan-European consumers organisation BEUC filed a complaint with the European Commission today against online fast-fashion retailer Shein over its use of 'dark patterns', tactics designed to make people buy more on its app and website.
Pop-ups urging customers not to leave the app or risk losing promotions, countdown timers that create time pressure to complete a purchase, and the infinite scroll on its app are among the methods Shein uses that could be considered 'aggressive commercial practices', BEUC said in a report also published today.
The BEUC also detailed Shein's use of frequent notifications, with one phone receiving 12 notifications from the app in a single day.
'For fast fashion, you need to have volume, you need to have mass consumption, and these dark patterns are designed to stimulate mass consumption,' Agustin Reyna, director general of BEUC, said in an interview.
'For us, to be satisfactory, they need to get rid of these dark patterns, but the question is whether they will have enough incentive to do so, knowing the potential impact it can have on the volume of purchases,' Reyna said.
'We are already working constructively with national consumers authorities and the European Commission to demonstrate our commitment to complying with EU laws and regulations,' Shein said in a statement, adding that the BEUC had not accepted its request for a meeting.
Shein and rival online discount platform Temu have surged in popularity in Europe, partly helped by apps that encourage shoppers to engage with games and stand to win discounts and free products.
The BEUC has also previously targeted Temu in a complaint.
Shein's use of gamification, drawing shoppers to use the app regularly, has helped drive its success.
In the 'Puppy Keep' game on the app, users feed a virtual dog and collect points to win free items.
They can gain more points by scrolling through the app, and by ordering items, but must log into the game every day or risk losing cumulative rewards.
The BEUC noted that dark patterns are widely used by mass-market clothing retailers and called on the consumer protection network to include other retailers in its investigation.
It said 25 of its member organisations in 21 countries, including France, Germany and Spain, joined in the grievance filed with the commission and with the European consumer protection network.
Late last month, the European Commission notified Shein of practices breaching EU consumer law and warned it would face fines if it failed to address the concerns.
The company is also under scrutiny from EU tech regulators on how it complies with EU online content rules.

French mayor to face trial for alleged sex tape blackmail of political rival
LYON, June 7 — A French mayor accused of using a sex tape to blackmail a political rival is set to go on trial in September after a court yesterday ordered him to face criminal proceedings. Gael Perdriau, who leads the city of Saint-Etienne in central France, is accused of orchestrating the plot in 2015, using footage of his deputy with a male escort. The two magistrates investigating the case ordered that Perdriau, 52, be tried for blackmail, theft, embezzlement of public funds by a public official and participation in a criminal association, Lyon's chief prosecutor Thierry Dran said in a statement. The case, triggered by a whistleblower in 2022, involves a 2015 video of former deputy mayor Gilles Artigues receiving a massage from a male escort in a Paris hotel. Perdriau allegedly demanded political loyalty and electoral concessions from Artigues in return for keeping the compromising video private, according to court documents seen by AFP. Despite being ousted from the conservative Republicans party and under pressure to resign, Perdriau has maintained his innocence and continues to hold office—even hinting at a 2026 re-election bid. The trial is set to take place between September 22 and 26, pending any appeals, the prosecutor added. Perdriau declined to comment when contacted by AFP on Friday, while his lawyers could not be reached for comment. — AFP

Ange Postecoglou sacked as Tottenham manager despite Europa League triumph
LONDON, June 7 — Ange Postecoglou was sacked as Tottenham manager yesterday just 16 days after the Australian ended the club's 17-year trophy drought by winning the Europa League. Postecoglou led Tottenham to a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in Bilbao to clinch the north Londoners' first European prize in 41 years and secure a place in next season's Champions League. But the Australian paid the price for Tottenham's worst domestic season since they were relegated from the top flight in 1976-77. 'Following a review of performances and after significant reflection, the Club can announce that Ange Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties,' a statement on Tottenham's official X account said. Exactly two years after he was hired from Celtic, Postecoglou's eventful spell in north London was brought to a ruthless end by chairman Daniel Levy. Tottenham lost 22 of their 38 Premier League games to finish 17th in the table, above only relegated trio Leicester, Ipswich and Southampton. 'The Board has unanimously concluded that it is in the best interests of the club for a change to take place,' the statement said. 'Whilst winning the Europa League this season ranks as one of the club's greatest moments, we cannot base our decision on emotions aligned to this triumph. 'It is crucial that we are able to compete on multiple fronts and believe a change of approach will give us the strongest chance for the coming season and beyond. 'This has been one of the toughest decisions we have had to make and is not a decision that we have taken lightly, nor one we have rushed to conclude. 'We have made what we believe is the right decision to give us the best chance of success going forward, not the easy decision.' Postecoglou had forcefully defended his track record during the season and bristled at the constant questions over his future after his trophy success. 'Forever connected' with Spurs He clashed with Tottenham fans during a defeat at Chelsea when he cupped his ear to them in a defiant gesture after a goal that was eventually disallowed. That blunder encapsulated his turbulent time in north London, but the 59-year-old bowed out gracefully. 'My overriding emotion is one of pride. The opportunity to lead one of England's historic football clubs and bring back the glory it deserves will live with me for a lifetime,' he said in a statement released moments after his sacking. 'That night in Bilbao was the culmination of two years of hard work, dedication and unwavering belief in a dream. 'Sharing that experience with all those who truly love this club and seeing the impact it had on them is something I will never forget. We are forever connected.' Tottenham were ravaged by injuries and in the latter stages of the campaign Postecoglou focused on keeping his key players fit and fresh for the Europa League. The gamble paid off but even securing Tottenham's first trophy since the 2008 League Cup was not enough to save him. He becomes the fifth manager sacked by Levy in the past six years. Brentford boss Thomas Frank, Fulham manager Marco Silva, Crystal Palace chief Oliver Glasner and Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola are reportedly the leading candidates to replace Postecoglou. Postecoglou made a blistering start to his Tottenham career, earning rave reviews for his 'Angeball' style of attacking play. However, a string of defeats at the end of the season blew a golden opportunity to qualify for the Champions League. In September 2024, Postecoglou boldly stated that he 'always wins things' in his second year. He delivered on that pledge but even the euphoria from the Europa League win could not save him from the axe. Postecoglou had largely retained the support of his players and Tottenham defender Pedro Porro saluted his efforts. 'Thank you for everything, boss. I'll always be grateful for the way you led us, defended us, and kept us going through all the highs and lows,' Porro said. 'Above everything, you gave us one of the greatest moments in the club's history and for that, you'll always be celebrated.' — AFP

SW China mountainous county brews global matcha success
Photo of a tea farm in Jiangkou County, southwest China's Guizhou Province. – Xinhua photo GUIYANG (June 7): In Jiangkou County, nestled in southwest China's mountainous Guizhou Province, a centuries-old tea tradition is fueling a modern global boom. In 2024, the county's matcha sales exceeded 1,200 tonnes with an output value surpassing 300 million yuan (about US$41.7 million), while its products have been exported to overseas markets including Japan, the United States and France. As a major matcha-producing country, China is poised to produce over 5,000 tonnes of matcha in 2025. Notably, Guizhou, leveraging its high-altitude tea farms, low latitude and misty climate, accounts for one quarter of China's national output and exports to more than 40 countries and regions. Jiangkou County, located at the foot of Guizhou's Unesco-listed Fanjing Mountain, was once a poverty-stricken region but is now a pioneer in the field of matcha production. This turnaround began in 2017, when cutting-edge matcha industrial technology was introduced to this area. Led by industry leaders in partnership with allied enterprises and local farmers, this initiative has established a province-wide matcha industrial network in Guizhou – spanning 22 counties and empowering nearly 100,000 tea growers via increased incomes. The county's tea fields currently cover 160,000 mu (about 10,667 hectares), with 20 per cent dedicated to matcha production. 'We control every step from farming to processing – to ensure premium quality,' said Meng Zude, chairman of Gui Tea Group, a leading tea company that manages the industrial cluster in Jiangkou. Meng explained that farmers focus on cultivation while allied partners process leaves. Gui Tea Group then refines leaves into premium matcha. From field to factory, free technical support ensures EU-standard compliance across the supply chain, Meng added. Jiangkou County has adapted Japanese matcha techniques to local conditions through both collaborations with experts and in-house research and development. Farmers now implement fertilisation protocols, eco-friendly pest control and precision pruning – critical steps that ensure high-quality tencha leaves. Four tonnes of matcha have already been exported to Japan in 2025, while another six tonnes are scheduled for shipment to this traditional matcha hub this year, according to Chen Xiaoming, deputy director of Gui Tea's foreign trade business. 'Domestic clients now approach us directly, while Japanese buyers seek raw material supplies,' Chen said, adding that inquiries have grown significantly. 'Matcha isn't just a drink,' said Chen. 'It's a lifestyle China now leads.' – Xinhua
