Actor Kamal Haasan, five others elected to Rajya Sabha from Tamil Nadu
Actor and politician Kamal Haasan and five others were on Thursday elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Tamil Nadu, the Deccan Herald reported.
The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam backed four candidates: MP P Wilson, poet Rajathi Salma, SR Sivalingam and Makkal Needhi Maiam chief Haasan.
The remaining two candidates, IS Indaburai and M Dhanapal, were backed by the state's main Opposition party All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
Their term will begin in July and end in July 2031.
B Subramaniyam, the returning officer for the Rajya Sabha polls, said that while 13 nominations were received for the election, only six were deemed eligible.
Since the number of valid nominations matched the number of seats up for election, the candidates were declared elected unopposed, The Hindu quoted Subramaniyam as saying.
The election marks the entry of Haasan's Makkal Needhi Maiam into the Rajya Sabha.
While the DMK's strength in the Rajya Sabha remains at 10 seats, that of the AIADMK increased by one.
Haasan was promised a seat after his party joined the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance at the state level in March 2024, ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, the Deccan Herald reported.
Tamil Nadu has 18 seats in the Rajya Sabha. In addition to the DMK and AIADMK, the Congress and the Tamil Maanila Congress (Moopanar) have one seat each.

Supriya Sule rules out alliance with Ajit Pawar or BJP in upcoming municipal elections
Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) leader Supriya Sule has ruled out any alliance with the Ajit Pawar-led NCP or Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming municipal elections. Sule is on a tour of Pune district during which she visited newly-appointed municipal commissioner Naval Kishore Ram to discuss various issues related to her Lok Sabha (LS) constituency, Baramati. Sule told media persons: 'In a democracy, there should be dialogue. We should meet all party leaders and this is Maharashtra's tradition. But in the coming elections, we will never go with the BJP.' Recently, state president of the Ajit Pawar-led NCP, Sunil Tatkare, had said, 'We have entered an alliance with the BJP and we will remain with them. If someone wants to join us, they should accept this principle.' Whereas the city president of the NCP (SP), Prashant Jagtap, said, 'Supriya Sule has made it clear that there will be no alliance with the BJP or Ajit Pawar-led party. We are prepared to contest the municipal elections and ready to face them.' For the last few weeks, there have been rumours about the likelihood of both NCP factions coming together. Recently however, both parties celebrated 'Foundation Day' in Pune, sending out a clear message that there will be no merger of the two factions. It is now clear that the two NCP factions will contest the upcoming civic elections separately and against each other.

Punjab won't allow outsiders to govern state: Bharat Bhushan Ashu
Times News Network Ludhiana: Punjab Congress working president and the party's bypoll candidate, Bharat Bhushan Ashu, on Friday said that the bypoll was a battle of Punjabis against non-Punjabis, who after looting and robbing Punjab's resources, were trying to usurp political power. "We are all fighting for Punjab, Punjabi and Punjabiyat", he remarked, asserting that there was complete unanimity in this election that no non-Punjabi will be allowed to usurp Punjab's political authority. "At stake is the Punjabi 'anakh', the self respect, that Arvind Kejriwal has repeatedly hurt", Ashu said, while addressing a public meeting. The senior Congress leader alleged that Kejriwal has hurt the prestige of Punjabis by imposing people from Delhi on them. "I have no issues with anyone, including AAP workers or leaders who are from Punjab," he said, adding, "Punjabis gave them the mandate in 2022 and I respect it. " However, he added that Punjabis did not give their mandate "for people from Delhi to rule over them." He said, "none of the local AAP workers, leaders, legislators and most of the ministers, have any say in the government and administration. They cannot get even a junior official transferred as that also is directed from Delhi. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like USDJPY đang đi lên không? " Even now, Ashu added, Kejriwal is aiming at snatching away a Rajya Sabha seat from the Punjabis to grab it himself and go to the Rajya Sabha. "Why should the Punjabis allow that?" he asked, disclosing that AAP supporters have been telling him how suffocated and hurt they feel. "Ludhiana West bypoll will mark the beginning of the end of Delhi leaders' authoritarian rule over Punjab", he said, observing, "The results on June 23 will force AAP to undertake course correction and the party will stop thrusting outsiders on Punjabis."
