Family link claim as Beaumont children search resumes
A family member of a key suspect in the Beaumont children's disappearance was related to the trio by marriage, it has been claimed.
The evidence was made public on Saturday as the decades-long search to find Jane, Arnna and Grant Beaumont, who vanished without a trace during an outing to an Adelaide beach on Australia Day in 1966, resumed.
Excavators took to the site of the former Castalloy foundry hours earlier, where it is believed owner Harry Phipps kidnapped, murdered and buried the children 59 years ago.
Independent MP Frank Pangallo organised the privately-funded dig and said a person close to the family has told him that Mr Phipps' niece married a cousin of the children's father, Jim, in the years after they vanished.
"That hasn't been previously known and it's another link in this case that shows Mr Phipps could have known the Beaumont kids and the family," he told Adelaide Advertiser.
"It's another piece of circumstantial evidence that points to (him) being the prime suspect."
Mr Pangallo was joined at the site in North Plymouth by forensic archaeologist Maciej Henneberg, author Stuart Mullins, former South Australian detective Bill Hayes.
Large earthmoving equipment also started preliminary excavation work at the northern end of the government-owned site, which is about to be sold off for development.
"This search will be the last opportunity to search the area where those closest to the case believe their bodies were buried before new industrial or residential developments are built on the site," Mr Pangallo said.
The search will revisit two sites previously excavated along with a third never-before-searched location and is expected to take about a week to complete.
Jane, 9, Arnna, 7, and Grant, 4, vanished without a trace from Glenelg beach on January 26, 1966.
Their parents, Jim and Nancy Beaumont, told police the children left home with sixpence but a shopkeeper recalled Jane buying pasties and a meat pie with a one-pound note.
Mr Phipps has long been the main person of interest in the children's disappearance and presumed murder.
Shortly after his death in 2004, Mr Phipps' son, Haydn, was interviewed and revealed he had seen three children at the family house shortly after the disappearance.
He also told police he was violently abused by his father as a child.
The new search will be the third time the Castalloy site has been examined.
In 2013, police excavated an area after claims by two brothers that three days after the children disappeared, Mr Phipps paid them to dig a "grave-sized" hole on the factory site.
At the request of Mrs Beaumont, police conducted a second dig in 2018, excavating to a depth of about 1.5 metres before abandoning the effort.

He has pleaded not guilty. Here are the main highlights from the trial's fourth week: A woman named Jane testified on Thursday and Friday, the single mother using a pseudonym to protect her identity. Considered Victim-2 in the Southern District of New York's sex trafficking and racketeering case against Combs, prosecutors kept much of Jane's experience under wraps until she took the stand. In chilling testimony, Bryana 'Bana' Bongolan recalled the night in September 2016 when Combs allegedly cornered her on her close friend Casandra 'Cassie' Ventura's 17th floor balcony in Los Angeles, lifted her up, and 'held' her over the edge as she feared for her life. Bongolan said Combs was irate, yelling at her, 'You know what the fuck you did!' As she desperately tried to hold on and not slip to her death, she told Combs she had no idea what he was talking about, she recalled. After about 15 seconds, Combs finally relented and 'threw' her into some patio furniture, she testified. She said the alleged assault left her with bruising, back and neck pain, and deep emotional distress. 'I have night terrors and paranoia and scream in my sleep,' she told jurors. The jury was shown photos of what Bongol an said was her injury from that night, a large purple bruise on the back of her leg with a puncture wound in the center. The photo was snapped on September 26, 2016, according to metadata. But Combs' defense team latched onto that photo's date, which Bongolan said was taken in the immediate aftermath of the alleged balcony incident. They pulled up photos and hotel records that show Combs was actually in New York on that date, making it impossible for him to be in 'two places at the same time,' as Combs' defense attorney Nicole Westmoreland said. 'In theory, yeah,' Bongolan replied. 'I can't answer that one.' On redirect, Bongolan was asked if she had any doubt that Combs dangled her from the 17th story. 'I have no doubt,' she said. 'I will never forget him holding me over the balcony.' After Bongolan left the stand, prosecutors showed jurors a text message between Ventura and Combs' chief of staff Kristina Khorram dated September 2016, where Ventura tells Khorram of learning of the balcony incident. Over the weekend, Combs' all-star defense team filed its second motion for a mistrial, claiming Bongolan's testimony was 'demonstrably false in key respects.' 'The incident, as alleged, is disturbing and powerful evidence, and the government has used it to depict Mr. Combs in an extremely negative light, as an angry and dangerous man who terrified Ms. Ventura and her friends,' Combs' attorneys wrote in a Saturday letter. 'All of this was highly improper, and exacerbated the harm caused by suborning the perjured testimony.' Combs' team has already asked for a mistrial during testimony from a Los Angeles Fire Department arson investigator who was explaining the aftermath of musician Kid Cudi's car having a Molotov cocktail lobbed inside his Porsche. The official said he only recently learned that fingerprint cards taken from Kid Cudi's front door had been mysteriously destroyed during the course of his investigation. Combs' attorneys brought up the LAFD's official testimony in their recent letter, saying 'the government's motive all along must have been to suggest that Mr. Combs had corrupt influence over the LA authorities when it tried to create the impression that he was responsible for the destruction of the fingerprints.' 'Accordingly, the Court should grant a mistrial based on prosecutorial misconduct,' the five-page letter concluded. (Subramanian has yet to rule on the motion.) Combs' longtime chief of staff Kristina Khorram's name has continually popped up throughout the trial, but this week was the first notable time that prosecutors began using evidence taken from her devices, which were seized in the March 2024 raids on Combs' homes. During testimony from Eddy Garcia, the former InterContinental security guard who testified that he helped broker the deal between Combs and other security members to make the hotel videotape disappear in March 2016, the jury was shown pictures of the documents Garcia signed, as well as the driver's licenses that Garcia turned over. Prosecutors later said that these images were found on Khorram's electronic devices. A looming question is if Khorram will testify for the government, going against her boss of more than a decade. Already, many witnesses have mentioned Khorram — who has been described as Combs' right hand. Before the jury was brought in on Friday, prosecutors called her an 'agent and a co-conspirator of Mr. Combs.' Amid testimony, prosecutors entered a string of text messages between Combs and one of his security guards, D-Roc, into evidence. Dated September 13, 2015, the lengthy exchange seems to follow the aftermath of a fight between Combs and Ventura. 'Cass is calling studios looking for you,' D-Roc messages Combs. 'She keep asking for you, telling me she wants to go to the studio. I told her to chill out and said you are feeling bad about what happen.' 'Stay on top of Cassie,' came Combs' response, after D-Roc mentioned that he gave Ventura an ice pack. 'Does the eye look better? How is she holding up?' D-Roc told Combs that Justin (presumably Combs' son) had seen Ventura's eye, adding that he explained the apparent injury came from a 'fight [that] broke out last night in the club.' 'Why did she not have herself hiding,' came Combs' immediate response. Earlier in the conversation, Combs and D-Roc also seem to discuss another woman, who is referred to as 'G.' 'Hit my shorty and ask her what is going on,' Combs instructs D-Roc. 'Tell her that you just left me and you asked about her and all I said was I want to talk about it right now. Asking what's going on. Also be like, I thought you was coming to the big concert this weekend. Say he told me you were last week.' 'What did shorty say,' Combs asked, adding 'G.' The 'big concert' Combs was seemingly referring to was the iHeartMusic festival where the Bad Boy family performed ahead of the next year's reunion. In separate testimonies, Ventura, Combs' former personal assistant Mia and celebrity stylist Deonte Nash all spoke about Ventura discovering Combs' affair with a woman named Gina in October 2015, while she was filming a movie in South Africa. The public was given a rare peek into Combs' personal financial records through testimony provided by Bad Boy Entertainment's former Chief Financial Officer, Derek Ferguson, who testified on Tuesday afternoon. The executive, who worked for Combs and his various businesses between 1998 and 2017, was brought in to verify various companies that Combs solely owned and bank records associated with those entities. Ferugson was shown a bank statement for December 2011. That month alone, more than $3 million quickly flowed in and out of the account, which was tied to an LLC for Combs' former home in Alpine, New Jersey. The mogul's various businesses — including Combs Enterprises that was largely funded by Combs' partnership with liquor giant Diageo — deposited up to $800,000 in a single day into the personal account. Combs may have done some early Christmas shopping, making a $500,000 payment to Barbara Gladstone Gallery. He also wired $20,000 into an account for 'Casandra Ventura' on Dec. 14. The following week, nestled amid the hundreds of thousands of dollars pouring in and out of the account, shows a record for $20,000 being wired into Combs' account from Ventura's parents. The R&B singer's mother earlier testified during the trial that shortly after Combs discovered Ventura's fling with musician Kid Cudi, Combs called her directly and 'demanded' that she pay $20,000 that he allegedly had spent investing into Ventura's career. Regina Ventura testified that she and her husband took out a home equity loan to muster up the funds on such short notice. 'I was scared for my daughter's safety,' Regina said, referring to an email she had received from Ventura, who claimed Combs was threatening to release sexually explicit videos of her. In her own testimony, Ventura said she quickly broke things off with Kid Cudi and got back together with Combs, explaining that she believed it was the safest thing to do. 'I mean, Sean said to me, before I left L.A. that he was going to hurt the both of us,' Ventura said. 'I took that in my mind, like, if I stay in this situation, we both will be hurt. If I don't, then no one will be.' Days later, bank records showed that $20,000 was returned to the original sender — matching with Regina Ventura's testimony that the money was returned a few days later with no explanation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Maurene Comey said her direct examination of Jane will take up much of Monday, and the cross-examination could last until Thursday. The government has not unveiled their following witnesses, but previously indicated they could rest their case ahead of their previous projected timeline of six weeks. Bongolan testified she had no idea why Combs had directed his anger to her. The forensic video and audio expert took the stand to testify to the claim by Diddy's team that the 2026 hotel footage was fake. Piazza told the court nothing had been done to compromise the footage. Combs' team previously fought to keep the jury from viewing the surveillance footage. By now, the jury has viewed the video at least eight times. On Thursday (May 29), Diddy's former assistant 'Mia' alleged Diddy was abusive and violent. The woman, who wanted to keep her identity private, told the story of when she and Ventura sneaked out of their hotel and into a party at Prince's house. They two friends were having a great time until the Bad Boy mogul spotted them, prompting Ventura to run and try to hide from him. As we previously reported, Diddy caught up to them about both women paid. Mis said she was suspended without pay citing insubordination, and Ventura allegedly was beaten, got luggage thrown at her and was called out her name. After she was mentioned in rapper Kid Cudi's testimony, Capricorn Clark took the stand Tuesday (May 27) to spill more tea on the prosecution's kidnapping accusation against Diddy. She said he came to her apartment one morning with a gun before telling her, ''Get dressed, we're going to kill [Kid Cudi],'' Combs continued, according to Clark. Combs was allegedly 'irriate' after discovering Ventura was in a romantic relationship with the 'Day 'n' Nite' rapper. So, he allegedly forced Clark into his Cadillac Escalade that morning and drove to Cudi's house. On another occasion, Diddy accused her of stealing jewelry from him and forced her to take a lie detector test five days straight. ''If you fail this test, they're going to throw you in the East River,'' Clark recalled being told. The world was waiting to hear what Diddy's ex-girlfriend, Ventura, would say about her alleged abuser. At eight months pregnant, Ventura took the stand and shared shocking details about the nature of her relationship with Diddy. According to her, the hotel footage of Diddy dragging her in 2016 occurred right after one of his alleged 'Freak Offs.' She also revealed she received a $20 million settlement following her 2023 lawsuit against Combs. 'I'd give that money back if I never had to have 'Freak Offs,'' an emotional Ventura said on the stand. 'If I never had to have 'Freak Offs,' I would have had agency and autonomy. And I wouldn't have had to work so hard to get it back.' Shortly after her daughter's testimony, Regina Ventura took the stand against Diddy. As we previously reported, Regina said Combs contacted her, demanding $20,000 in 'recoup money' for the funds he supposedly spent on Ventura. This led to Regina and her husband taking out a home equity loan to pay Combs. She sent the money to the disgraced mogul, but it was then wired back to her. Garcia, who is a former hotel security guard for the InterContinental Hotel, took the stand to testify about what he witnessed in the notorious 2016 incident captured on surveillance cameras. According to him, Ventura refused to calls the cops. Diddy soon asked for the footage, which led to. him paying Garcia $100,000 for the only copy. Before the trial started, former Diddy protégé Dawn Richard said she witnessed Diddy abusing Ventura, but she added gruesome details once she took the stand. According to her, Diddy once tried to hit his girlfriend with a skillet, punched her in the stomach and even asserted his control of Ventura through her music career. ''I own you…when I'm ready for you, you'll do,'' Richard said, quoting Combs. 'And it was always wait, wait, wait for her. She had to wait her turn.' Sharay Hayes, an exotic dancer who goes by 'The Punisher,' told the court he had multiple sexual interactions with Diddy and Ventura. According to him, he was hired to perform sexual acts with Ventura while Combs watched. Shockingly, Hayes revealed Combs would give him and Venture orders to perform, but then he began having performance issues. 'Me, personally, a sexual scenario with a woman's partner present actively giving directions was not the norm for me, so it created some discomfort that could affect my performance,' Hayes said in court. After that, he wasn't asked to return for another alleged Freak Off, as The Root previously reported. Special Agent Gerard Gannon is one of multiple federal agents expected to testify in court. According to Gannon, he was on the scene when Diddy's Miami mansion was raided last year. When news broke of the federal raids at Combs' mansions in Los Angeles and Miami, many speculated what exactly agents found. Now, we know. In court, Gannon revealed the feds found AR-15s, loaded magazines, sex toys and lube, according to TMZ. He also testified that the serial numbers on the discovered weapons were scratched off. David James, who worked for Combs as his personal assistant from 2007 to 2009, was overcome with emotion while telling the court what it was like to work for the Bad Boy mogul. He also said once, he saw Ventura asleep in bed while a man with 'long hair' was also in the room. At the time, James said Diddy was in the shower, and although he was confused, he never asked questions about what he saw. Daniel Phillip— a former manager of a male revue show for women— testified that Ventura paid him to perform sexual acts with her in front of her 'husband,' who Phillip identified as Combs, The Root previously reported. That's when he dropped a bombshell revelation. 'Cassie was actually the one that asked me to urinate on her,' Phillip said on the stand. 'She asked me if I had ever done that before, she told me to do it. Apparently I was doing it wrong, because they both told me.' Kerry Morgan, Ventura's ex-best friend, made it clear her testimony only came as an obligation to a federal subpoena. She continued on the stand that she moved on with her life and 'away from all these people and the problems.' She went on the detail several instances when Combs was violence towards Ventura. Morgan tried to get involved, urging Ventura to leave Diddy, but that's when things took a scary turn. 'He came up behind me and choked me and then boomeranged a wooden hanger at my head,' Morgan testified. After that, she distanced herself from Ventura and Diddy, we previously reported. Since Ventura's bombshell lawsuit against Diddy, many have wondered what would lead Ventura to stay with Diddy after allegedly suffering years of abuse. A forensic psychologist took the stand breaking down a list potential reasons for this, The Root reported. Hughes is a 'blind expert,' meaning she doesn't know the details surrounding Combs' relationship with Ventura. On the stand, she cited trauma bonding, financial dependency, a loss of recollection and more reasons for why someone like Ventura, who's young musical career was in the hand of Diddy, didn't walk away sooner. Rapper Scott 'Kid Cudi' Mescudi took the stand on Thursday (May 22) testifying that Diddy blew up his car. This was corroborated by Ventura's previous account, as we previously reported. The rapper told the courts in 2012, he was notified that his car had been set on fire. A month before that, Diddy allegedly broke into the 'Day 'n' Nite' rapper's house, leading him to break up his brief romantic relationship with Ventura. According to her, their romance made Combs 'irate.' Eventually, Diddy and Kid Cudi had a one on one meeting. That's when he said the disgraced mogul denied having any involvement with his car blowing up. Cudi also testified Ventura confided in him about the physical abuse but not the sexual abuse she allegedly suffered under Puff.
