What Is Dust Even Made Of? (And How to Manage It)

What Is Dust Even Made Of? (And How to Manage It)

New York Times13-03-2025

Cut down on items in your home that hold on to dust and allergens. This is the first preventive step. Carpet, upholstered furniture, drapes, and linens all hold on to dust, so the less of them you have in your home, the better for your allergies and breathing.
Frequently wash your bedding and linens. We recommend washing bedsheets about once a week and changing towels every three days or so. This is especially important if you have pets.
Dust regularly. Rather than using something like a feather duster, which ends up redistributing dust onto other surfaces or into the air, the American Lung Association recommends damp-dusting. I like to use a microfiber cloth dampened with all-purpose cleaner to dust most flat surfaces in my home, and I tackle corners and crevices with a handheld vacuum. Michael Hession/NYT Wirecutter
Instead of using a feather duster, which flings dust back into the air, use a damp microfiber cloth to wipe down surfaces while trapping dust. $5 from Amazon

Because cleaning can agitate dust and recirculate it into the air, Checkley recommends that you open windows while cleaning; those who are exceptionally sensitive to dust can also wear a well-fitting N95 mask to avoid inhaling fine particles. Work from the top of the room (tackling overhead fans and the tops of picture frames, for example) down, since dust settles.
Buhr also encourages people to run their HVAC system for a few hours after cleaning to suck stirred-up dust into the filtration system. You should also want to change your HVAC filters every three months, he says.
A typical house cat might shed 75,000 hairs a day. A robot vacuum can help manage all that fur between deep cleans.
Vacuum regularly to help reduce the amount of dust in your home. This is particularly important if you have shedding pets. Checkley recommends using vacuums with HEPA filters to trap dust particles, though home-improvement senior staff writer Liam McCabe, who previously reviewed vacuums for Wirecutter, found that HEPA filters aren't a cure-all for reducing your exposure to kicked-up dust while you're vacuuming. Marki Williams/NYT Wirecutter
Although HEPA filters are certainly the gold standard, they can filter only what they touch, and many vacuums have air gaps that allow fine particles to travel around the filter or spew out from the vacuum's seams before the filter catches them. 'Depending on your goals and expectations for your indoor air quality, an expensive upgrade isn't always necessary,' Liam says. In general, it's better to clean carpets and upholstery even with an imperfect vacuum than to just let the dust pile up. We have recommendations for the best vacuums if you are shopping for a new one.
Buhr also suggests emptying vacuum dustbins outdoors directly into the trash can to reduce exposure to the cloud of dust that often puffs up as you empty it.
Run an air purifier to cut down on dust buildup. An air purifier can also help reduce the allergic reactions that dust triggers by filtering airborne allergens, mold spores, pollen, bacteria, and smoke from the air.
Under typical conditions, Wirecutter recommends running your air purifier 24/7 on the 'quiet' setting, which is generally the medium setting on three-speed purifiers or the high-medium setting on four-speed machines. Dedicate a purifier to each room in your home and place it at least 18 inches from a wall and any furniture, ideally near the midpoint of the room you're using it in. Connie Park/NYT Wirecutter
Although people might never fully win the war against dust (and those pesky mites), you can certainly keep dust at bay with some targeted cleaning and preventive measures. That's good news, too, because I don't want to think about all the dead skin cells and potential allergens floating around my home, even if it is a fact of life.

Microplastics may contribute to heart disease, lung disorders, and other health problems. Use these 12 tips to reduce your exposure.
For a dependable, versatile, and affordable cleaner, we prefer a bagless upright, but we have recommendations for other types of vacuums as well.
Most microfiber cloths are essentially the same, but after weeks of testing, our cleaning writer liked Fixsmith Microfiber Cleaning Cloths best.

Want stronger legs without running? I tried rucking for a week, and it's a game-changer

I've been writing about fitness for the past decade and have seen countless workout trends come and go. Right now, everyone is talking about the benefits of walking, and more specifically, walking with a weighted backpack — also known as rucking. Rucking has roots in military training, and is a full-body workout that'll strengthen your muscles and send your heart rate soaring. Rucking is new to me, but never one to shy away from a challenge, I swapped my daily runs for rucking for a week. Read what happened when I grabbed a weighted backpack and gave this a go. The Novablast 5 are our favorite running shoes overall. They come in a variety of colors, are great for runners or walkers of all levels, and deliver an impressive mix of comfort, responsiveness, and versatility. Rucking is walking with a weighted vest or backpack on your back. Despite the weight, it's a low-impact workout, and you don't need any special equipment to get started. Despite lots of brands selling specialized rucking vests, a regular, comfortable backpack (preferably with padded shoulder straps) loaded with a dumbbell or a couple of books is enough to give rucking a go. If you do want to buy a specific vest, our AI writer Amanda Caswell swears by this $25 vest from Amazon. Compared to your regular walk, you'll burn a lot more calories rucking, as your muscles will be working harder to move. As a form of strength training, over time, rucking will help you build and maintain muscle strength, improve bone density, and build your cardiovascular fitness. As with all new exercise routines, it's always a good idea to check with your doctor before trying it, especially if you're recovering from an injury or pregnancy. Keen to find out more, I tried rucking for seven days. There's no doubt about it — rucking is a full-body workout. The additional weight made my walk more challenging from my first step. On day one, I was perhaps a little overambitious, loading a 7kg (15-pound) dumbbell into my go-to running backpack. I'd read that when it comes to selecting a weight for rucking, you should start with 10-15% of your body weight, so at 119 pounds, this seemed about right. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. By the end of the walk, I found that the weight made my walk a lot harder than expected. I could feel my legs working hard, as was my core and upper body, which were working to keep my torso upright. I'm currently 15 months postpartum, so I'd probably recommend starting lighter and building up, rather than chucking yourself into the rucking-deep-end like I did, as I was aching by the time I removed my backpack. As my toddler is only in nursery three mornings a week, for the rest of this challenge, I strapped him to my back instead. Far wrigglier than a dumbbell, he added to the rucking experience, as unlike a dumbbell, he'd lean his bodyweight to the left or right, depending on what he wanted to see. He also added the extra challenge of having to fish snacks out from my pockets and raise my arms to hand them to him. The good news is, however, focusing on pointing out every school bus and garbage truck made my 30-minute walk pass by faster. My top tip when it comes to trying rucking for the first time? Spend a decent amount of time getting properly set up before you walk. As I mentioned, on day one, the weight was too heavy and I kept stopping to tighten or loosen straps as I went. I walked with a running backpack that had a chest strap, which I found really helped distribute the weight evenly across my back. I also appreciated the padded shoulder straps. When it came to carrying my toddler, I used the Osprey Poco Child Carrier, and spent some time adjusting the back support to ensure the weight wasn't sitting on my hips. This isn't the kind of walk where you want to rush out the door — the right set up is essential if you want to avoid injuries. The Osprey Poco Child carrier comes in black or green (pictured), has zippered pockets to store snacks and other items, comes with a sun shade, and can support itself on the ground. It can accommodate children up to 40 pounds. I don't often have to consider my form as I walk, but the additional weight on my back made me do so. The tendency is to lean your torso forward, especially towards the end of the walk, as your muscles get tired, but this can put additional strain on your lower back. Start with a lighter weight, and think about keeping your shoulders back and your abs braced as you walk. My verdict after a week of rucking? I loved the additional challenge, and this is definitely something I'll keep in my routine. As my toddler gets bigger and I get stronger, the weight will increase, making him my perfect rucking companion. That said, if you don't have an energetic 15-month-old to strap to your back, why not invest in one of the best adjustable dumbbells instead?

These $60 Amazon Sneakers Are Nurse-approved and ‘More Comfortable' Than $145 Hokas

I've been traveling for more than 20 years and believe the best way to see a place is on foot. That, of course, requires a cushioned pair of walking shoes—I learned that the hard way after my podiatrist told me I was wearing the wrong sneakers. There were plenty of viral footwear brands and styles that caught my eye for their plush cushioning, but many of their $100-plus price points steered me to look for more affordable alternatives in Amazon's fashion store. That's how I found these nurse-approved Nortiv 8 sneakers that look almost identical to the $145 pair I had in my cart. Right now, the supportive shoes that shoppers have been calling 'more comfortable' than their pricier counterparts have been restocked for just $60. Amazon shoppers can't get over how supportive and cushioned Nortiv 8's walking shoes are, including nurses who spend as many as 12 hours on their feet per day. One nurse, in particular, said, 'For the first time in years, I don't come home with aching feet.' They continued, 'I also bought a pair of Hoka shoes, but these are more comfortable and for a fraction of the price.' Another nurse, who was a former fan and wearer of Hoka shoes, bought these to replace the costly sneakers. They wrote, 'They are so comfortable and feel like I'm walking on a cloud.' Similar to Hokas, the sneakers come with an extra-thick sole. It's made from Nortiv 8's ActiveFloat cushion technology to provide arch support and slip resistance, and to help take some strain off your knees, according to the brand. Whether you're exploring a new city, going for a morning jog, or just running errands, the shoe's thick sole will adapt to your activity to keep you comfortable. You don't have to worry about blisters either, according to one Universal Park attendee who wore them right out of the box with no break-in period and walked 20,000 steps a day. Plus, the breathable mesh upper can provide airflow to help keep your feet cool, another reviewer noted, which is especially handy on long travel days. You can also expect some slight stretch within the upper to help you slip your feet inside with ease. Chiming in, a shopper who works in nursing said they had great traction on a flooded floor. They said that these were the first shoes they've worn that didn't leave their feet hurting at the end of their 16-hour work days: 'I'm glad I saved myself a hundred bucks and went with these instead." The walking sneakers also come in a range of colors, including classic white and bold, statement-making colors like hot pink. Shop Nortiv 8 walking shoes while they're still available. And if you're looking to stock up on additional pairs of comfortable sneakers, check out our top picks under $100 at Amazon, below. Love a great deal?
