'No one recognises me at Pittodrie' - Aberdeen's unlikely 1990 hero

BBC News23-05-2025

Graham Watson scored a sudden-death penalty when Aberdeen last won the Scottish Cup in 1990. You'd be forgiven for thinking he is given a hero's welcome on his each and every return to Pittodrie. But that isn't the case."Unless they knew me, I don't think anybody would recognise me at Pittodrie now," Watson said."Some people will probably look at the cup final team picture and query 'who's that guy?'"Among a star-studded side, the defender was an unlikely hero at 19 years old.He was, reluctantly, tasked with lining up against against Republic of Ireland and Celtic goalkeeper Pat Bonner to keep his team alive in the shootout.Flame-haired Watson came off the bench in extra time for just his fifth first-team appearance after making his debut less than a month previously and kept his cool amid the Hampden "bedlam" to make it 8-8.The teenager's strike paved the way for Brian Irvine to score the winner after Anton Rogan's spot-kick was saved by Dons keeper Theo Snelders. "I didn't even expect to be in the 13," 54-year-old Watson said, reflecting on his career-defining day 35 years on and ahead of Saturday's Hampden rematch between the teams. He added: "Even when I was on the bench, I didn't think about going on the park. I felt like a spectator."When I did get on, I had a few involvements in the game and then it just kind of ran to penalties and I was thinking there's no way I would be part of any conversations for taking a penalty."It was just a major relief when I saw it going in. It would have been good to score the winner but it was still good to score one. It would have been a disaster if I'd missed."The 1990 triumph would be the pinnacle of Watson's otherwise low-key career. He broke his leg in a friendly in Holland a few weeks later and missed the entire following season. After 13 appearances in the 1991-92 campaign, he dropped back into the reserves and then left Pittodrie in 1994 and had spells with Clyde, Livingston and Forfar before embarking on a long career in the police."It was funny because I went up 10 years ago for the 25-year anniversary and some of the other players didn't even recognise me because obviously I'm bald now and have put on a bit of weight," said Watson."Some professionals play for 20 years or make 400 appearances for a team and don't win a cup final so for me to have 15-20 appearances for Aberdeen and get a cup winner's medal there, I feel pretty lucky."

No big deal, right? Sadly for Steve Clarke and this Scotland squad, after Friday's horror show at Hampden, they've made this game have a much greater importance than it should. Despite mixing it with the big boys in the Nations League recently, it does seem strange that we can only attract friendlies against the likes of Iceland and tonight's opponents, Liechtenstein. But what was probably seen as a couple of friendlies to get morale back up after the disaster against Greece last time out, suddenly has led to questions over some of the squad and - in particular - Clarke himself. His goalkeeping crisis hasn't helped and he'll need to find someone to play there later after Cieran Slicker's shocker off the bench on Friday in the 3-1 defeat. Scott McTominay and Kieran Tierney have also pulled out the squad ahead of tonight's game, citing injuries. Clarke's decision to remain loyal with some players - particularly those who can't get a game with English League One sides - has been a thorn in his side this last year or so, where only three wins have been picked up in 13 games. Scotland are short odds to win tonight, naturally. And they'll need to make sure that's shown on the park. Sun out in Vaduz, with Scots in need of shine

There is a sleepy, summer vibe in Liechtenstein this morning. The sun is shining in this curious corner of the Alps, nestled between Switzerland and is Pfingstmontag or Whit Monday, a public holiday in these Germanic speaking parts. It marks the second day of Pentecost, which commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit on the for Scotland a day of overtime lies ahead as they seek redemption from recent the quick turnaround from Friday, the flatness of the dismal Hampden defeat by Iceland has not are the sixth worst side in the Fifa rankings, without a competitive win in five years and they failed to even touch the ball in the Welsh penalty area in their 3-0 loss in Cardiff on Friday. But none of that does much to salve the sense of foreboding given Scotland have struggled here years ago they had to huff and puff to a 1-0 win in Vaduz. That result came after Liechtenstein had stunned Hampden by taking the lead before Scotland roused themselves to a 2-1 win thanks to a Stephen McManus header in the depths of injury may have recently duelled it out admirably with eventual Nations League winners Portugal, but against the supposed lesser lights there is a well documented history of and Peru both in 1978, Costa Rica in 1990 all leap to mind. Even last summer Scotland laboured to a 2-0 victory over Gibraltar.A similar score line would suffice today from this depleted Scotland squad. But there is a trepidation when the Scots face the banana skins of world is no doubt players are running on fumes. Kieran Tierney and Scott McTominay are out and the squad is down to the bare are mitigating factors for Scotland. The freakish goalkeeping situation means it is likely Ross Doohan will be given the gloves. If reports are to be believed he is to be Celtic's third-choice keeper next season. That speaks volumes as to the seriousness of the situation between the sticks, which national coach Steve Clarke has recently spoke manager remains an ironclad bastion of calm, at least on the surface. Monday evening has no bearing on World Cup qualifying, he says. However, he knows - everyone knows - that anything less than a Scotland win over Liechtenstein will be considered a footballing of season and public holiday it may be, but Scotland have work to do after the boos that rang out at full-time on Friday.

Zander Fagerson ruled out of Lions tour as Jamie George among call-ups to squad

Scotland prop Zander Fagerson has been ruled out of the British and Irish Lions tour to Australia, with Ireland's Finlay Bealham replacing the tighthead in Andy Farrell 's squad. Fagerson has been struggling with a calf issue and missed Glasgow's United Rugby Championship semi-final defeat to Leinster this weekend, and will now miss out on a second trip with the quadrennial tourists. Bealham joins international teammate Tadhg Furlong, also dealing with a calf injury currently, and England's Will Stuart as tighthead options available to head coach Farrell as the Lions prepare to begin their itinerary against Argentina in Dublin on Friday 20 June. With Furlong and Stuart preparing for the URC and Premiership finals with Leinster and Bath respectively, Sale and England youngster Asher Opoku-Fordjour will join up with the Lions squad at a training camp in Portugal this week. Hooker Jamie George, who narrowly missed out on selection, will also travel to Quinta do Lago with Ronan Kelleher and Dan Sheehan occupied with Leinster's preparations for a meeting with the Bulls at Croke Park on Saturday. 'It's tough on Zander to miss out so close to the Tour, but now Finlay gets an opportunity to come in and add to the group,' Farrell said. 'This is unfortunately part and parcel of the game, so we always have to be prepared for that. 'But it's great to finally be at the stage where we can get onto the training ground and get to work with these players. Portugal will be really important for us as we look to get our house in order with only a few training sessions before we take on Argentina in the 1888 Cup in Dublin.' While the URC and Premiership finalists have not been ruled out of the clash with the Pumas at the Aviva Stadium, the turnaround is tight with just six days between the showpiece occasions and the opening fixture of the Lions' summer. It may be, then, that either George or Opoku-Fordjour are yet retained to feature in the game. England centurion George toured in 2017 and 2021, while for Opoku-Fordjour, 20, this will be a first taste of Lions involvement. Bealham, meanwhile, is set to return to Australia, with the Canberra-born prop impressing since making his Ireland debut in 2016. He started every game of the Six Nations.
