Apple Loop: iPhone 16 Pro Special Offer, Advanced iPhone Camera Leaks, Macs Left Behind

Taking a look back at this week's news and headlines from Apple, including Apple's massive camera plans, iPhone 16 special offers, new OS numbers, the Intel Macs left behind, WhatsApp arrives on iPad, Apple tries to be a gaming platform again, and The Talk Show loses an important guest. Apple Loop is here to remind you of a few of the many discussions around Apple in the last seven days. You can also read my weekly digest of Android news here on Forbes. SHANGHAI, CHINA - MAY 15, 2024 - Customers experience the newly released iPad Pro and iPad air at ... More the Apple Store in Shanghai, China, May 15, 2024. (Photo credit should read CFOTO/Future Publishing via Getty Images) Apple looks set to upgrade its 48 megapixel main camera used throughout the iPhone range to a 200 megapixel—which would bring it in line with flagships such as Samsung's Galaxy S25 Ultra. A larger sensor will allow for more image detail, better video stabilisation, and more data for AI processing. But it's the zoom option it opens up for smaller iPhones: "Furthermore, the added resolution available from the new sensor could potentially show enormous improvements in iPhones without a dedicated telephoto lens, such as the 'non-Pro' and 'e' models. by expanding the current 48-megapixel '2x optical quality' zoom to an equivalent 4x with a new 200-megapixel Fusion camera." (Forbes). Meanwhile, Apple has improved its offer to those looking to buy the iPhone 16 or iPhone 16 Pro. The trade-in value for smartphones handed over in the purchase has been posted, but you only have until June 18th to take advantage of it. "All the iPhone trade-in rates have increased, but some have only gone up by as little as $5 compared to what they were before, and the full discount only comes when you trade in for an iPhone, not for anything else. Across the board, the trade-in values stretch from $50 for an iPhone 8 up to $650 for an iPhone 15 Pro Max, assuming each is in good condition." (Forbes). One of the big draws at Apple's upcoming Worldwide Developer Conference will be the updates across the board to Apple's various operating systems. While the code will be closely examined, another change is going to be much more visible. It's time to change the numbers: "Instead of iOS 19, iPadOS 19, macOS 16, tvOS 19 and visionOS 2, Apple will standardize the numbers so they all refer to a year, specifically next year, rather like the way automobiles are named for the upcoming year. This is all according to a new report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who claims that the change is 'to bring consistency to its branding.' (Forbes). With the upcoming launch of MacOS 26, Apple is closing in on a world where it only supports its own silicon. Hardware always drops off the supported list, but this year only a handful of Intel-based Macs remain supported; these are generally the 2020 models that were on sale in the months ahead of the Apple Silicon M1 reveal in Nov. 2020: "Notably absent from this list are the 2018 MacBook Pro models, the 2020 Intel MacBook Air, the 2017 iMac Pro, and the 2018 Mac mini. These are also the oldest machines officially compatible with macOS Sequoia. As such, they are the most likely to lose support in any case." (Apple Insider). It's taken some time, but Meta has finally decided that iPad users can finally log on to WhatsApp with an iOS/iPadOS app that finally supports the tablet: '...the most recent build that hit Apple's App Store brings support for Apple's tablet. It's been a long time coming, and WhatsApp is even beating Instagram to the punch. While the release notes for the latest build, 25.16.81, don't mention anything special, this fresh piece of code does enable support for the iPad. Once you've updated, it'll stretch and fill the screen appropriately on an entry-level iPad, the iPad mini, or both sizes of the iPad Pro or iPad Air." (Techradar). Apple is going to take another swing at the gaming market. While the iPhone has been a boon for smartphone gaming, the big hitters remain resolutely reluctant to work with Apple, instead focusing efforts on the home consoles of Sony and Microsoft, the portable powerhouse of Nintendo, and the halfway house of the Steam Deck and the ROG Ally. Can another pre-installed app launcher with Apple achievements change that sentiment? "The move is meant to enhance the experience on Apple devices at a time when gamers have plenty of alternatives, including cloud services and consoles. Nintendo Co. is preparing to roll out its much-anticipated Switch 2 device just days before Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference on June 9, when the new app will be introduced." (Bloomberg). Curious news ahead of WWDC as one of the marquee Fringe events has annoucned news on its guest list This will be the first recording of John Gruber's podcast 'The Talk Show' at WWC to not feature a leading name from inside Apple: "Ever since I started doing these live shows from WWDC, I've kept the guest(s) secret, until showtime. I'm still doing that this year. But in recent years the guests have seemed a bit predictable: senior executives from Apple. This year I again extended my usual invitation to Apple, but, for the first time since 2015, they declined." (Daring Fireball). Sean ‘Diddy' Combs' lawyers say ex-assistant's social media posts undercut her rape allegation

Sean 'Diddy' Combs ' lawyers confronted his rape-alleging former personal assistant on Friday with her social media posts praising the hip-hop mogul as a mentor, 'my brother' and 'friend for life' for years after she says he assaulted her. Defense attorney Brian Steel quizzed the woman about some of the dozens of posts she made about Combs in the wake of the alleged rape, portraying the warm messages as contradictory to her claims that working for him was often toxic and terrifying. The woman, testifying under the pseudonym 'Mia' for a second day at Combs' federal sex trafficking trial, read some of the messages aloud as they were displayed for jurors. Mia told the jury that the posts were a facade: 'Instagram was a place to show how great your life was, even if it was not true.' Steel highlighted a post from 2013 celebrating Combs' 44th birthday, showing a still image from a comedy video featuring Combs as a doctor helping Mia give birth to a fake baby. Below it, Mia wrote: 'Shout out to my mentor. Thank you for always letting me give birth to my dreams.' 'Here, you have posted on your personal account your rapist delivering the baby,' Steel said. Mia testified Thursday that, just months after Combs forcibly kissed her at his 40th birthday party in 2009, he woke her up then raped her in a bunk bed in his Los Angeles home. The ex-assistant said sexual assault continued sporadically enough that she thought it wouldn't happen again. She is the second of three women expected to testify at the federal trial in Manhattan that they were sexually abused by Combs. Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty to sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy charges that could put him in prison for life if he is convicted. President Donald Trump on Friday didn't rule out pardoning him, if asked. In other posts Steel presented, Mia praised Combs for 'continuing to inspire me every day.' She wrote 'love you' and joked about the rapper and entrepreneur buying her a vanilla latte at Starbucks after he was named to a top spot on a Forbes list of wealthy individuals. Steel also showed jurors a handwritten letter Mia gave Combs with the words 'Happy 45th Birthday Puff Daddy' in large, red letters, along with her gift to him: a scrapbook of magazine articles that chronicled the early years of his rise to fame. Throughout his cross-examination, the lawyer struck an incredulous refrain, asking: 'Why would you promote the person who has stolen your happiness in life?' Mia said it was only natural to post about the good times, and has previously testified that the 'highs were really high and the lows were really low.' She acknowledged Friday that she referred to co-workers as 'family' and used the word 'love' in correspondence with Combs — even after she alleges he sexually assaulted her. 'That's how we all talked to each other,' Mia said. Mia worked for Combs from 2009 to 2017, including a stretch as an executive at his film studio. However, she said she hasn't held a job since then because of post-traumatic stress. Mia said she would misinterpret emails asking 'where are you?' as scolding because of how Combs treated her. She said someone calling her name would cause her alarm, even if it was an innocent attempt to get her attention. She recalled throwing her phone across a room in terror when Combs' number popped up as an incoming call days after his former girlfriend, the singer Cassie, sued him in November 2023. 'It was just so triggering,' Mia said. After leaving Combs' employment, Mia said, she received a little more than $200,000 of a $400,000 settlement to reimburse her for bonuses and overtime that weren't paid. The rest, she said, went to her lawyers, whom she never told about the alleged sexual assaults. Mia said one of Combs' former bodyguards also reached out to her in the days after Cassie filed her lawsuit. At first, she said, she was elated to hear from D-Roc, whose real name is Damion Butler, until she realized he was at Combs' house and trying to reconnect her with her former boss. Mia testified that she felt 'terrified, threatened, scared, nervous' that Combs was using an intermediary to reach her. She said she 'wanted to play dumb' and needed a gameplan to protect herself. 'I didn't want my life to be in danger,' Mia said. Combs settled with Cassie, whose real name is Casandra Ventura, within a day for $20 million. However, a federal agent testified earlier in the trial that Cassie's lawsuit prompted a criminal investigation that eventually led to Combs' indictment. Mia's testimony echoed concerns that prompted judges to deny Combs bail, keeping him jailed since his arrest last September. Prosecutors said Combs and his allies were contacting potential victims or witnesses to prevent them from cooperating or to get them to alter their recollection of events. At a bail hearing last September, Assistant U.S. Attorney Emily Johnson said Combs contacted at least one victim in November 2023 and was in constant contact with witnesses, including as late as last July. ‘I still think I'm dreaming': Kai Cenat's ‘Streamer University' now has its first graduating class

The class of 2025 have now graduated from Kai Cenat's 'Streamer University.' Last week, 120 students—handpicked from more than a million applicants—attended the University of Akron for a four-day live-in boot camp. Of course, the whole thing was streamed by Cenat as well as attendees. Cenat, who has 17.3 million Twitch followers and ranked No. 24 on Forbes 's list of the top-earning creators in 2024, with estimated earnings of $8.5 million, first announced his plans in February, explaining how he wants to help streamers both big and small learn from his success. Cenat introduced each of the inaugural class from behind his principal's desk during an hour-long meet-and-greet video, available to watch on YouTube. Enrollment was free, with food and accommodations on the college campus covered. Each student was also given a T-Mobile phone to livestream the entire experience. They did not disappoint. Content was streamed across nearly 1,000 different Twitch channels with over 719,000 peak concurrent viewers and over 27 million total hours of watch time, per Twitch Tracker. In addition to snippets from inside the classrooms, other viral clips show students skipping class, trashing dorm rooms, and fighting with water guns (which ended with one student being hospitalized). Follower boosts for grads Despite some bad behavior, many students reported major follower growth from attending the university. 'Before and after streamer uni,' one participant posted on X. According to screenshots, her average views rose from below 100 to nearing 10,000. 'I still think I'm dreaming,' she wrote. While livestreaming their experiences, students were also enrolled in lessons taught by 'professors,' aka popular influencers. The curriculum covered 'Defense Against Hating' and 'Internet Beef,' among other subjects. During the grand finale awards ceremony, rapper Drake made a surprise appearance with a virtual message for both students and faculty. 'Year one is officially in the books. Congratulations,' Drake said from behind a desk. 'To be able to organize this incredible academia event . . . is something that has never been done before. Show love to your dean, the one and only Kai Cenat.' Cenat's success has apparently not gone unnoticed by other streaming giants. During a recent Twitch stream filmed from his office, Cenat hinted that major streaming services had all expressed an interest in bringing 'Streamer University' to their platforms. However, the 23-year-old emphasized the importance of maintaining creative autonomy. 'With an idea like this so original, you gotta keep it where it's at,' he said. 'I want y'all to learn something, bro. Y'all channels, and who you are as a person. This y'all idea, this is your guy's stuff. Treat your platform as you would treat other platforms.'
